Staff/faculty development opportunity: 'Faith and Learning on the Ground'

What does it mean to be a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America? How does Luther differ from other faith-based colleges? How might we respond when a student says her religion class shattered her faith? Staff and faculty are invited to participate in a half-day session to learn more about Luther's identity and philosophy as a college of the church. 

Led by Pastor Blair and Kristin Swanson, this workshop was held last summer and was so well received it is being offered again. Join us Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon in Hammarskjold.

Carbon neutral timetable

Luther College Regents have endorsed a timetable for the college to achieve a carbon neutral campus and have authorized President Torgerson to plan and pursue sustainable methods of operation and energy conservation initiatives that will take the college to its zero carbon footprint goal. The resolution instructs the college to reduce its campus carbon footprint by 50 percent by the end of 2015, 70 percent by 2020, and achieve its carbon neutral goal by the year 2030.

Personal day

A reminder to all staff that the personal day issued on Sept. 1, 2011 must be used by Aug. 31, 2012 or it will be forfeited. The personal day is available on a yearly basis, to be used at the discretion of the employee and their supervisor. The allowed hours (based on full-time/part-time status) must be used in one single block, and should not be split between more than one day. If there are any questions, please contact Human Resources at 387-1134 or Payroll at 387-1135.  

TIAA-CREF on campus

TIAA-CREF will be on campus for personal financial consultations in a confidential setting Monday, July 9 from 1-5 p.m., and Tuesday, July 10 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Register at www.tiaa-cref.org/letstalk1 or call 866-843-5640, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. The consultations are held in the Career Center, Dahl Centennial Union, Room 205. 

Road Construction

The intersection of North Street and Riverview Drive will be closed beginning Wednesday, June 27. The City hired a contractor to re-configure the road and sidewalk, and work on the storm sewer.

Riverview Drive will be closed outside the Facilities Office and by Norby House, but Dike Road will be open. As a reminder, the road between Facilities Services and the Korsrud Heating Plant is a service drive.

Expected completion date is Aug. 3.

'Oral Communication' workshop canceled

The "Oral Communication" workshop scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, June 25-26, has been canceled.

Summer reading books still available

Free copies of the summer reading, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," are still available for faculty and staff in the Book Shop. If you are sharing a book, but would like your own copy, stop by the Book Shop and pick one up. The free copies are provided by the Office of the Academic Dean and the Paideia Endowment.

Marty's CyberCafé summer hours

Marty's will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. through the rest of the summer. The menu will be limited to beverages and snacks including shakes made with local ice cream from WW Homestead Dairy, slushies, smoothies made with local yogurt from Country View Dairy, Frappuccinos, sodas and cookies. Stop by for a cool treat! 

Faculty and staff Cafeteria discount

All faculty and staff dine at a discounted rate in the Cafeteria. Prices for faculty and staff are: breakfast: $3.70; lunch: $5.20; dinner: $6.95. Summer cooking classes

A series of nine cooking classes is available for free to all faculty and staff this summer. Topics include: salad dressings, grilling, healthy summer meals, steaming/sauteing/stir-frying, family pizza-making and much more. Distinguished Lecturers for 2012-13 academic year

Campus Programming is delighted to announce the Distinguished Lecturers for 2012-13. In fall, we welcome Frank Warren,  founder of the Post Secret Project on Tuesday, Sept. 25. He will offer the afternoon discussion "What does it mean to be 'known'?" and an evening lecture "The Most Trusted Stranger in America" at 7 p.m.

In spring, we welcome Vandana Shiva, global energy conservation leader and physicist on Tuesday, Feb. 26. She will offer an afternoon discussion and an evening lecture "Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace" at 7 p.m.

COMMUNITY

We received word this morning that David and Rachel Faldet's daughters, Elizabeth and Pearl, were in a serious car accident last night in Spring Grove, Minn. Pearl is in intensive care at Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse. A passenger in their vehicle, Martha Meade '79, a former Luther employee in Admissions, was killed. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Mark Johns presented a paper, "Two screen viewing and social relationships: Exploring the invisible backchannel of TV viewing," at the Cultural Attitudes towards Technology and Communication conference at the University of Aarhus, Denmark.

David Njus was a co-author with five students on several papers presented at two conferences in May. Holly Godar '13 and Andrew Tjossem '13 co-authored "Avoidant Attachment Mediates the Relationship Between Parental Attachment and Short-Term Mating Desire," which was presented at the annual meeting of the Association for Psychological Science. Rachel Hodapp '13 was the co-author of a presentation titled "Political Orientation, the Correspondence Bias, and Attributions of Wrongdoing" at the annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association. Also at the Midwestern Psychological Association meeting, Katrina Okerstrom '14 and Kaela Stuart '12) were co-presenters of the paper "Mortality Salience, Self-Esteem, and Attachment to Adults and God."

Robert Shedinger gave the presentation "The Irony of Islamophobia: Valuing Islamic Resources in a Multifaith World" at a conference on Islamophobia sponsored by the Islamic Circle of North America held at the University of Toronto on June 16.

Lawrence Williams has accepted a position as adjunct professor at University of Louisville to teach two classes in the fall and spring semesters in the Pan-African Department.

Philip Freeman has published "Lessons from a Demigod" about teaching the Epic of Gilgamesh to college students in the July/August issue of Humanities: The Magazine of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
