Solar energy field nears completion
Luther's new $1.2 million solar energy field is nearing completion. It will be the largest single solar energy production facility in the state of Iowa when it goes online in early July. Located on a two-acre site along Pole Line Road, the 1,250 separate solar panels mounted in six rows are the main feature of the 280-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system. Dragonfly Solar, based in the Twin Cities, designed the solar panel facility.

Personal day
A reminder to all staff that the personal day issued on Sept. 1, 2011 must be used by Aug. 31, 2012 or it will be forfeited. The personal day is available on a yearly basis, to be used at the discretion of the employee and their supervisor. The allowed hours (based on full-time/part-time status) must be used in one single block, and should not be split between more than one day. If there are any questions, please contact Human Resources at 387-1134 or Payroll at 387-1135.
Road Construction
The intersection of North Street and Riverview Drive will be closed beginning Wednesday, June 27. The City hired a contractor to re-configure the road and sidewalk, and work on the storm sewer.
Riverview Drive will be closed outside the Facilities Office and by Norby House, but Dike Road will be open. As a reminder, the road between Facilities Services and the Korsrud Heating Plant is a service drive.
Expected completion date is Aug. 3.
Summer cooking classes
A series of nine cooking classes is available for free to all faculty and staff this summer. Topics include: salad dressings, grilling, healthy summer meals, steaming/sauteing/stir-frying, family pizza-making and much more. Classes are taught at the Oneota Coop after work and at Luther during lunch break. Click here for details and registration information. Limited spots available.
Meals that Fit
Luther Wellness is partnering with Dining Services to offer Meals That Fit in Oneota Market. Each meal combination is guaranteed to be under 650 calories and have under 1000 mg of sodium. The meals also consist of less than 35 percent of calories from fat. Many different meal combinations are offered for a variety of tastes. Punch cards are offered; after 20 meals, employees can win a gift card provided by Luther Wellness.

Distinguished Lecturers for 2012-13 academic year
Campus Programming is delighted to announce the Distinguished Lecturers for 2012-13. In fall, we welcome Frank Warren, founder of the Post Secret Project on Tuesday, Sept. 25. He will offer the afternoon discussion "What does it mean to be 'known'?" and an evening lecture "The Most Trusted Stranger in America" at 7 p.m.
In spring, we welcome Vandana Shiva, global energy conservation leader and physicist on Tuesday, Feb. 26. She will offer an afternoon discussion and an evening lecture "Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace" at 7 p.m.

Memorial service for Martha Meade
The community is invited to a brief service of readings and prayers to remember Luther alumna Martha Meade, LC '79, Tuesday, July 3, 10:30 a.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. Since it will not be possible for many to travel to San Francisco for the services there, we'll have a simple campus gathering of friends and colleagues for readings, prayers, remembrances and mutual consolation. Update on Pearl Faldet
Pearl Faldet who was seriously injured in an automobile accident is recovering at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse. Physicians and family report that her recovery is progressing faster than expected. She will continue to work with her neurosurgeon and physical therapists in the recovery process. We will continue to update the Luther community via the Tuesday newsletter.

Update on LSM faculty member
Last week, Matt Sintchak, Lutheran Summer Music faculty member, was injured while riding his bike across campus. After being thrown from his bicycle, Matt was taken to the hospital then air-lifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Matt suffered head trauma and fractured several bones in his face. He is on the mend at home in Madison, Wis. Medical staff said that he should make a full recovery in time.

Position opening
The economics and business, math and computer science departments seek a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills for a part-time position (approximately 28 to 32-hours per week during the academic year.) Primary responsibility for assisting the departments with duties. Qualifications include: A.A. or equivalent experience preferred; courses in business helpful; technology skills and aptitude for learning and using new technology also required. Knowledge of current Microsoft Office Suite and Google software tools, scheduling software, website software and more is desirable. Proven ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing required. Submit application to HR.
Lab and simulation director: Luther's nursing department seeks a nine-month staff appointment responsible for working collaboratively with faculty to implement lab and simulation experiences. Duties include managing equipment and supplies in nursing laboratories, supervising students employed in the labs, facilitating simulation experiences and supporting teaching of skills across the curriculum, coordinating skills and simulation lab budgets and grants with Department Head, maintaining records of skills and simulation lab activities, evaluating effectiveness of skills and simulation lab activities, providing faculty development related to best practices in simulation and skills instruction and coordinating skills and simulation lab calendars. Minimum: bachelor's degree in nursing with expertise in lab/clinical teaching. Master's degree in nursing preferred. Start date is Aug. 20.
ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Beth Lynch was a co-author on five research presentations at the biennial meeting of the American Quaternary Association June 21-24. Jimmy Marty '12 and Chris Nevala-Plagemann '11 presented work from their senior projects in, "Holocene climate history of northwestern Wisconsin reconstructed from lake level changes." The presentations all related to a project examining the interactions among climate, fire and vegetation in northern Wisconsin, which has involved nearly 20 Luther students over the past 10 years.

Sylvia Gift Nabukeera memorial
It has been about a year since Sylvia Gift Nabukeera made her way to spend time with her family in her hometown of Jjongoza, but never reached her loved ones. She disappeared in Nairobi on June 24, 2011 and was found dead weeks later, with the circumstances of her death still unknown. With the sadness, grief, anger and helplessness of her loss came the continuing remembrance of happy and joyous moments shared, as well as her kindness, courage and shining spirit.
Springs of Peace is a grass-roots initiative dedicated to and inspired by Sylvia. Through donations and grant-writing, the group is attempting to raise $20,000 to build 20 rainwater harvesting tanks in Sylvia's village, Jjongoza.
Springs of Peace is working in partnership with the Jjongoza Rotary Community Corps to provide access to clean and potable water to the community. To find out more about Springs of Peace visit: http://springsofpeace.wordpress.com/about/.
