Staff development opportunity: 'Faith and Learning on the Ground'

It's not too late to register for the workshop focused on Luther's identity and philosophy as a college of the church, to be held Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 9 a.m.-noon in Hammarskjold Lounge. This staff development opportunity will be counted as work time but staff should make the appropriate arrangements with their supervisors. To register click here. COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Iowa Private College Week

Aug. 6-10, Luther is participating in Iowa Private College Week. Each day, two groups of prospective students and their parents will on campus to explore Luther. At 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day, faculty and staff are gathering in the Union Lounge to talk with visiting families about academic and co-curricular programs. If you are on campus, please join us.

Facilities Services' projects

Spray foam insulation has been added under the Admissions' offices to prevent the transmission of cold temperatures through the steel and concrete to their areas.  New windows will be installed in the Dean's Office and Student Life offices. A capacitor bank is being installed between Olson Hall and the parking lot across from Facilities Services to correct the power factor. A new fire alarm system is being installed in Larsen.

Many thanks to the entire Luther community from Empowering Learners.  Your personal gifts, your gifts-in-kind, and your good wishes mean so much to us. This summer, 12 of us traveled and delivered additional educational supplies to our Lutheran schools in the far north of Namibia. As we now embark on our third year of fundraising, we celebrate the results of our efforts. Through your generosity you have helped us send (in total thus far): 19,000 library books/text books/encyclopedias, 65 computers/laptops, 50 TI83 calculators, dozens of Braille books, educational toys and soccer balls, and outright cash support. Everything we accomplish is in partnership with you our donors. Thank you so much.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Greg Lonning, Kelsey Anderson, Roger Jaeger, Vicky Jaeger and Reid Wilson, and a a team of Luther students  who have completed coursework in Experiential Leadership and Ropes Course Training, worked with Jeff Boeke and ABEE, Inc. to help run the indoors ropes course at the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans, July 18-22. More than 10,000 of the 36,000 youth attending the gathering participated in the indoor ropes with a healthy dose of Luther spirit.

Pastor David Vasquez served on the teaching staff of Holden Village June 30-July 1. David was a keynote presenter at the ELCA Glocal gathering in Sioux Falls, SD, June 22-23. He has spoken at many Glocals, ELCA events around the country designed to connect local and global mission. David also served as chaplain for Lutherlag, coordinating Lutherlag's daily chapel July 22-27.

Pastor Mike Blair represented Luther at the College and University center during the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans, July 18-22. Mike served as one of the chaplains for Wholly Iowa Youth Leadership and Discipling Event, July 26-Aug. 1, hosting 56 ELCA high school students and adults from ELCA congregations in Iowa for a week of leadership development, spiritual formation and recreation at Luther. Connie Barclay served as WIYLDE's administrative assistant.

Rachel Vagts was elected vice chair/chair elect of the Society of American Archivists College and University Archives section. The largest section of the Society, Vagts previously served on the College and University steering committee, as chair of the SAA Membership committee and as a member of the Annual Meeting Task Force. 

Xiao Hu and Du Huang presented two piano recitals in the Philippines as part of the Music without Border Series. They also held a piano master class at the University of Philippines.

Augie Lindmark '12, is taking part in a 4,000-mile Race Against Aids ride across America with 17 other people. The 68-day ride began in Half Moon, Calif. and will end in Boston by Aug. 23. Ride Against Aids is a project of FACE AIDS, a group of young people dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS, and Partners in Health. It is designed to gather college students to share presentations about FACE AIDS, the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the role of students in promoting justice. Robert Shedinger was recently interviewed about his book "Was Jesus a Muslim?" on three radio stations: WOR in Des Moines, WILS in Lansing, Mich., and WMUZ in Detroit.

David Kamm recently returned from an NEH Institute in New York City where he was one of 30 educators from across the country studying the Visual Culture of the Civil War at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Seven church congregations from Decorah and two from Mason City took leadership roles in the summer of 2012 to help churches develop new tools to pursue and achieve sustainable operations. The 2012 program was facilitated by Luther College Greening Churches interns Kristi Holmberg '12 with the bachelor of arts degree in religion, andCallie Mabry, a rising Luther junior majoring in environmental studies and history. Supervisors were Ruth Kath, Luther professor of German, and Dale Nimrod, Luther professor emeritus.
