Service of Dedication

Faculty and staff, spouses and guests are invited to attend the annual Service of Dedication Thursday, Aug. 23, at 3:30 p.m. President Torgerson will deliver his State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. Offices are allowed to close for the dedication service so that as many employees as possible can attend. A reception will follow.  

Opening Convocation Aug. 30

Opening Convocation will be Thursday, Aug. 30, 9:40 a.m. in the CFL.  Offices should close if possible so that all can attend convocation to welcome the class of 2016 and new transfer students. This year's speaker is Marjorie Opuni-Akuomoa '92, senior advisor at the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS in Geneva, Switzerland.

Staff development opportunity: 'Faith and Learning on the Ground'

It's not too late to register for the workshop focused on Luther's identity and philosophy as a college of the church, to be held Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 9 a.m.-noon in Hammarskjold Lounge. This staff development opportunity will be counted as work time but staff should make the appropriate arrangements with their supervisors. To register click here. COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Electrical repair to disrupt Luther servers and Internet access Aug. 14

On Tuesday, August 14, LIS will power down all servers and systems at 5 p.m. for approximately two hours. This outage includes on-campus internet access, however, Norse Apps will continue to be available off-campus.

During the power-down, a contractor from 3E will repair a problem with the electrical transfer switch that prevents the server room from automatically switching to its backup generator.

Farwell locked Aug.10-25

For security reasons Farwell Hall will be locked from 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 until 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. Faculty and staff may park in the student only parking south of Loyalty during that time period. 

Basil, basil, get your basil
Luther gardeners have an abundance of beautiful basil and we want to share it with you. Whether you're craving just a few sprigs to spice up some pizza or a pound for making pesto, we can accommodate your needs. Basil giveaway will be on the patio near the Valders Edible Landscape Wednesday, Aug. 15, noon-1 p.m. Get there early; we may run out.

Healthy snacks available every day in Luther's edible landscapes

Whether you're looking for something to spice up your salad at lunchtime or could use a few herbs for an evening meal, the campus edible landscapes may have what you need.  The "Off the Vine" garden, located near Valders Hall of Science, offers such treats as ground cherries, cherry tomatoes, peppers, various herbs, cucumbers and malabar spinach. In the "Diversity Garden," located near Ylvisaker Hall you can find eggplant, peppers, mini melons, swiss chard and lacinato kale. Take yourself on a self-guided tour of these gardens and pick up some snacks along the way. Be sure to close the gate when you're done—the deer and rabbits like the fresh produce as much as we do.

Thanks for campus-wide support of Iowa Private College Week

A thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of Iowa Private College Week. Two hundred and eighty-nine families visited campus Aug. 6-10. They were greeted by friendly staff and students; treated to delicious food in our cafeteria; toured clean facilities and a well-kept campus; conversed with faculty and coaches in their areas of interest. Luther's hospitality was evident and commented on by many visitors. Again-thanks.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Du Huang served as a member of the Adjudicating Committee at the 2012
Shanghai International Piano Festival and Institute.

Luther and the Luther Archives have been selected to develop and host the Archives Leadership Institute for three years, 2013-15. In support of the project, Luther Archives has been awarded $216,150 by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Rachel Vagts will serve as the director of ALI@Luther. Sasha Griffin will serve as program coordinator. The Archives Leadership Institute at Luther College will provide advanced training for 25 emerging and innovative leaders each year, giving them the knowledge and tools to transform the archival profession in practice, theory and attitude.

Alumna Lauren Griffin has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Montenegro for the 2012-13 academic year. Griffin's placement is at the University of Donja Gorica in Podgorica, Montenegro. She hopes to also volunteer with a local nonprofit focused on peace building and reconciliation. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.

Karen Kanakis and Jacob Lassetter presented two performances of Puccini's "Il Trittico" in New York City Aug. 3 and 5.

Andy Hageman's article "The Challenge of Imagining Ecological Futures: Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl" was published in the journal Science Fiction Studies, available online at: http://www.depauw.edu/sfs/abstracts/a117.htm#hageman.

Mark D. Johns facilitated four workshop sessions on effective newsletters and writing techniques for congregational secretaries and editors at the "BE HEARD!" Communication Workshop conducted by the Southeastern Minnesota Synod ELCA in Rochester on Aug. 7.

Brian Caton, Scott Hurley and Ellen Drewes-Stoen represented Luther at the Seminar for Advanced Interdisciplinary Learning held July 8-18 in Washington, D.C. The three were selected along with four other teams from the Associated Colleges of the Midwest to participate in the inaugural event:  "Considering Animals." While staying at George Washington University, the Luther team spent 10 days attending numerous lectures, classroom sessions and site visits. At a faculty meeting this fall the team will present a new course proposal for Paideia II, titled "Considering Animals." Team members are willing to share their experiences regarding SAIL or the Washington, D.C. trip with the Luther College community. Quintus Cicero's "How to Win an Election," edited by Classics professor Philip Freeman, was named an Editor's Choice in the New York Times Sunday Book Review.
