Task Group 150 Report now on Katie

The Task Group 150 draft report is posted on Katie for faculty and staff study and comment. Go to the course called "Office of the President" and then "Luther-President." I will host open forums to discuss the recommendations in the CFL Recital Hall Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2-3 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 22, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Individual comments can be directed to <skodalda>.

Royal ticket lottery open through Sept. 8

Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway will visit Luther Oct. 13 in honor of the college's Sesquicentennial Celebration.  The royal visit will include a 30-minute convocation at 10:30 a.m. in the CFL. The convocation will not include a faculty procession.  Faculty, staff and students wishing to attend are invited to request a seat through the ticket lottery. Friday Prayers

Join us each Friday at 12:15 p.m. in the Melanchthon Interfaith Room (second floor in the CFL) for Friday Prayers. Rooted in the Muslim tradition, this brief service is open to all. A call to prayer will be followed by readings, reflection and prayers. Luther alumnus Ahmed Alkhalili '10 and current students will be sharing in leading prayers. Sponsored by the Muslim Student Association and Allies, College Ministries and the Diversity Center.

Emily Gilbertson art exhibit

An art exhibit by Emily Gilbertson '04 will be on display Aug. 31-Oct. 21 in the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. Gilbertson's exhibit, titled "Synergy: An Interplay of Females and Floras," contains three bodies of work, tied together by a common theme.

Randy Carlson art exhibit

An art exhibit by Randy Carlson '76 will be on display Sept. 1-Oct. 16 in Preus Library. The theme of the ceramics exhibit draws on the Luther College Sesquicentennial theme "Transformed by the Journey."

Brown Bag presentation Sept. 6

Amy Dorman has completed her senior paper for WGST this summer and will be making her public presentation in the form of a Brown Bag Tuesday, Sept. 6 from
11 a.m.-noon in the Borlaug Room. The title is "Who Buys Sex, and Why?: A discussion on hegemonic masculinity and the global sex trade."

Rica Obsesion Sept. 9

Rica Obsesion, a salsa band from Chicago, will perform Friday, Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m. in Marty's CyberCafé. Tickets are $10, available at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357, or at the door the night of the show. Chips and fresh salsa, with ingredients from Luther's gardens, will be provided. Rica Obsesion performs musical selections from salsa greats, including the Spanish Harlem Orquestra, the late Frankie Ruiz and Soneros Del Barrio, as well as their own compositions.

Service of Rememberance and Hope

The community is invited to a Service of Remembrance and Hope on the 10th anniversary of 9/11: Sunday, Sept. 11, 4 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, Decorah. The service includes choral offerings by Nordic Choir, a homily by Richard Simon Hanson, Gregory Peterson serving as organist, prayers and readings by local pastors and congregational leaders. The service will be followed by reception in First Lutheran's Fellowship Hall.

Faculty Dance Performance, Hamp

"Loss, the Great Escape and Other Memories" will be performed Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Studio II, Center for the Arts. It is an evening of dance solos choreographed and performed by Amanda Hamp. The project is supported by an award from the H. George and Jutta F. Anderson faculty development fund. Admission is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the performance.

CSS: The Passing Zone Sept. 17

The Passing Zone, an award winning comedic juggling duo, will kickoff Luther's 2011-12 Center Stage Series with a performance Saturday, Sept. 17, 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. Tickets for the performance are on sale at the Box Office, 387-1357. Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.

College Night Sept. 19

Northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota high school students and their parents are invited to College Night on Monday, Sept. 19, 6:30-8 p.m. in the SRC, Regents Center. CSS: 'An Evening with Garrison Keillor'

Tickets for "The Aura of Flora in Decorah – An Evening with Garrison Keillor" are on sale at the Box Office, 387-1357. Tickets are $27, $25 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. Keillor and his pianist, Rich Dworsky, will entertain audience members with musings and song Tuesday, Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

COMMUNITY

Welcome new faculty

Jason Moyer joins the Luther faculty as a visiting assistant professor of communication studies. Moyer holds the bachelor's degree from Bluffton University, the master's degree in communication studies from Bowling Green State University, the master's degree in rhetoric and public advocacy from The University of Iowa and the certificate from the Projects on the Rhetorics of Inquiry at The University of Iowa.

Patricia Branstad joins the Luther faculty as a visiting instructor in German. She holds the bachelor's degree from Luther, the master of education degree from the College of St. Scholastica and is a candidate for the master of arts degree from Portland State University.

Francesca "Anna" De Santis joins the Luther faculty as assistant professor of Spanish and Italian. She holds the laurea from the University of Rome, La Sapienza, and the doctoral degree from the University of Pisa. 

Aaron Burmeister, of Decorah, joins the Luther faculty as an adjunct music faculty. Burmeister holds the bachelor of music degree from Lawrence University and the master's and doctoral degrees of music from the Indiana University School of Music.

Dena (Krambeer) Weinmann, of Pine Island, Minn., joins the Luther College faculty as a visiting instructor of nursing. She holds the bachelor of arts degree in nursing from Luther.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Sören Steding was a nominee for the NordMordAward, the first short story award for crime fiction in Northern Germany. His story "Tatortmalerei" (Crime scene painting) was published in the anthology "Nord Mord Ost".

Wanda Deifelt was part of the teaching staff of Holden Village during its "Haiti Week," June 18-25. The event was organized to honor the memory of Ben Larson, Luther alumnus who died in Haiti's earthquake. Lectures presented were "Called to be Global Citizens," "A Theology of the Cross," "Suffering, Resilience, Hope," "Embodied Theology" and "An Ethics of Care."

Beth Ray was the mezzo soprano soloist for the world premiere performance of "Rahab" by contemporary American composer Jesse Ayers. The premiere took place July 21 during the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival. Jeff Doebler '82, director of bands at Valparaiso University, conducted the performance. The 36-minute "surround-sound concert story" for mezzo soprano and symphonic winds tells the biblical story of Rahab of Jericho, a prostitute who aided the Israelites' conquest of the city. Rahab is the great-great grandmother of King David, and therefore an ancestor of Christ.

Sean D. Burke's article, "Queering Early Christian Discourse: The Ethiopian Eunuch" has been published by the Society of Biblical Literature in a volume of the Semeia Studies series titled "Bible Trouble: Queer Reading at the Boundaries of Biblical Scholarship."

Kate Narveson's book "Bible Readers and Lay Writers in Early Modern England: Gender and Religious Self-Definition in an Emergent Writing Culture," has been accepted for publication by Ashgate Publishing. Analyzing print and manuscript sources from 1580 to 1660, this volume studies how lay immersion in the Bible in post-Reformation England gave rise to a non-professional writing culture. It examines the connection between reading and writing practices, the influence of gender, and the emergence of writing as a key practice of lay devotion.

Weldon presents her 'yarden' Sept. 17

Amy Weldon is part of a free garden tour associated with the annual "digIN" green expo event in Decorah. Starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, the garden/ "yarden" tour will make five stops to demonstrate a variety of approaches to growing food in your own backyard. Spending time in a chilly house — about 61 degrees Fahrenheit — may boost the fat-burning power of the "brown fat" in your body.

Brown fat is considered "good" fat, as opposed to regular or white fat, which stores calories and tends to accumulate. Researchers believe that lean people have more of the brown type of fat, and that the amount of brown fat a person has declines with age.

Scandinavian researchers found that exposure to these chilly temperatures boosted the metabolic rate of brown fat 15-fold, helping burn more calories.

But diet experts caution not to expect too much, it's not going to be any kind of a miracle. And beware if you're the type who eats more when you feel cold.
