Task Group 150 report on Katie

Based on campus feedback, changes to the Task Group 150 report have been made. The report is posted on Katie for faculty/staff review. Go to the course called "Office of the President" and then "Luther-President."

Board of Regents meeting/materials

The Regents will meet on campus Oct. 28-29. The Board's business meeting is Saturday, Oct. 29, 9:30 a.m. in Loyalty Board Room, open to interested members of the campus community. Pre-meeting materials are at http://katie.luther.edu. Look for the Board of Regents site under the "my courses" section on the left side of the page. A sub-folder contains October 2011 documents.

Wind Turbine update

Luther shut down power this morning, Oct. 25, to connect the underground electrical cable from the wind turbine to the campus electrical substation. General Electric is expected to test and commission the turbine this week. The college is on track to begin commercial operation by Nov. 1.

Updated Tuition Benefit Program

Luther is pleased to offer its faculty and staff a benefit that is highly unique in today's workplace: higher education for one's dependents. The Tuition Benefit program has been updated and now has a three-step application process available online.

Deadlines are as follows:

Halloween Haunt Monday, Oct. 31

Schedule an appointment with the "mad" doctors in the Book Shop on Halloween. Games, drawings and spooktacular savings will be offered all day. Come in costume and receive an extra treat.

Health Service to hold flu clinics

Wednesday, Oct. 26: 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 3: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 11: 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Cost is $20 for the flu shot and $25 for the flu mist. You can pay with cash or check, or payroll deduction for staff and faculty.

Residence halls locked for fall break

The residence halls exterior doors are locked during fall break. Farwell will be open Monday-Wednesday during the day to allow access to campus from the lower parking lot. Students should carry their keys to gain access to their halls.

LIS executive director finalist

Terry Huttenlock, associate professor of library science, head of systems at Buswell Memorial Library, Wheaton College (Illinois) is a candidate for the position of executive director of Library and Information Services. Huttenlock will give a presentation to the campus Thursday, Oct. 27, 8:30-9:30 a.m., CFL Recital Hall. Miller Hall open house Oct. 27

The Luther community is invited to a Miller Hall open house Thursday, Oct. 27 from 9-10:15 a.m. Join members of the Residence Life staff for coffee and a tour of the newly renovated Miller Hall. Enter through the upper doors. Tour guides will lead tours through the building.

History walk last chance

This is your last chance to see the Luther College History Walk and the Luther Sketches Sesquicentennial theatre performance. These two performances will be held Friday, Oct. 28, for the Luther College Board of Regents. Join them at 4:30 p.m. for the History Walk at the Luther Bell (rain location CFA) or 7:30 p.m. for the Luther Sketches in the CFL Recital Hall.

Physics Haunted Lab Oct. 28

The physics department faculty and students invite community members to experience the thrill of optical illusions, laser displays and magnetic levitation during their Haunted Lab Friday, Oct. 28, from 6-8:30 p.m. The lab will take place in the lower level of the east wing of Valders. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Visitors are invited to come and leave at any time during the event.

SAC Special Events: Fall Fest

Celebrate Halloween with SAC Special Events at the annual Fall Fest, Friday Oct. 28, 7-9 p.m. in Marty's. Music and dance ensembles Eklipse, Tap That, Ballroom Swing and Strangz will perform. Contests for all. 

Council for Exceptional Children event

The Luther Student Council for Exceptional Children will host a mentoring event at Baker Commons from 10 a.m.- noon Saturday, Oct. 29. Students in grades pre-K to middle school who receive any special services through the schools are welcome to attend. We will have Halloween treats and make bags for Halloween. Exit Strategy: Open Mike

Mike Moran '12 will share his "reflections and ventures" Saturday, Oct. 29, 3-5 p.m., Olin 102. Mike will promote the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and the importance of studying abroad. A short film he starred in and a documentary film he created last summer for Jane Hawley’s "Movement Fundamentals Invitational Coalescence" connect his personal interests and liberal arts education, school assignments and real world applications.

Balalaika Ensemble benefit concert

The Luther Balalaika Ensemble will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a benefit concert on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission; a free-will donation will be taken during the concert. Proceeds will go toward the Bruce Wrightsman Memorial Scholarship which funds study abroad opportunities in Russia for Luther students.

Diwali celebration Oct. 30

Join College Ministries and the Diversity Center for a meal featuring dishes from various regions of India and a program about the festival of Diwali at "Interfaith Holiday Meal Celebration—Diwali," Sunday, Oct. 30, 6:30 p.m., Peace Dining Room. Space is limited. Faculty Artist Series: Murasaki Duo

The Murasaki Duo, featuring Eric Kutz and Miko Kominami, will give a Faculty Artist Series performance Sunday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. The program includes favorites by Beethoven and Chopin, as well as music by American composer Maria Newman, French composition teacher Nadia Boulanger and Hungarian cellist David Popper.

Residence Hall Trick-or-Treating Oct. 31

Luther Residence Hall Trick-or-Treating will be Monday, Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the first-year residence halls. Luther community members are welcome to take their families trick-or-treating through Ylvisaker, Olson and Brandt Halls. Participating rooms are identified by an orange pumpkin on the door. There will be cookie decorating in Olson, craft making in Brandt and games in Ylvisaker. Join us for trick-or-treating in the halls where the weather is always nice.

CSS: Paul Taylor Dance Company

Paul Taylor Dance Company, one of the world's most highly respected and sought-after ensembles, will perform Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall as part of Luther's Center Stage Series. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, available at (563) 387-1357 and http://boxoffice.luther.edu. Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.

Alumni art exhibit Oct. 27-Dec. 9

Paintings by Laura Hampton '80 will be on display Oct. 27-Dec. 9 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

The exhibit focuses on the Canyon de Chelly, a region in northeastern Arizona where Hampton has spent the last 16 summers teaching and painting.

'Soul of a Citizen' lecture Nov. 8

Paul Loeb, social activist, advocate for citizen empowerment and author of five books examining civic responsibility, will present "Soul of a Citizen" Tuesday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m. in Valders 206. Based on the title of his latest book, "Soul of A Citizen: Living With Convictions in A Cynical Time," Loeb's lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Meteorite impact crater lecture Nov. 10

Robert M. McKay, geologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, will speak Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in Valders 262.

McKay will discuss recent research findings that support the claim Decorah sits atop a buried meteorite impact crater.  The research suggests that the crater was created by a meteorite impact Ordovician age almost 465 million years ago.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Mark D. Johns is a member of the Ethics Committee of the Association of Internet Researchers, which has just published its revised guidelines for ethical internet research methods at http://aoirethics.ijire.net/.

Elizabeth Steding presented the paper "What Stories are Being Told? (Grand) Narratives from and of the GDR in Current Gymnasium Textbooks" at the German Studies Association Conference in Louisville.

Bill Kuhlman will play a recital on the historic 1896 Kimball organ at the Union Sunday School in Clermont, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m.  Featured composers on the program include Dvorak, Wiederman, Near, Boellmann, de Lange, de Vries, Walond and Billy Strayhorn. The organ is one of the largest examples of a tubular-pneumatic in America and has been honored on the National Historic Register.

MISCELLANEOUS

'Transformed by the Journey' published

Luther College Press has published "Transformed by the Journey: 150 Years of Luther College in Word and Image." Released in October, the 302-page, soft-cover book is available for purchase at the Book Shop. Cost is $25. "Transformed by the Journey" was compiled and written by Wilfred F. Bunge, Luther professor emeritus of religion and classics, with assistance from Mary Hull Mohr, professor emerita of English, and Dale Nimrod, professor emeritus of chemistry.

Break shuttle drivers needed

Luther now has a route in our break shuttle program for students to get to and from Decorah and Ankeny. We will be using one or two 12-passenger vans for transportation and are looking to contract with non-student drivers to drive this route. SHOC clothing drive Oct. 27-Nov. 6

Students Helping Our Community is running a clothing drive Thursday, Oct. 27-Sunday, Nov. 6.  Donations will be sent to Clothes4Souls, an international non-profit that will distribute the clothes to those in need. Donation stations will be set up in residence halls and in Dahl Centennial Union, Valders, Main and the CFL.
