AASHE Membership
Interested in staying current on sustainability issues in higher education? Luther is a member of AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, as part of that membership, all Luther faculty, staff and students have access to AASHE member services, including a weekly bulletin. Head football coach open forums
The campus community is invited to meet two candidates for the head football coaching position. There will be an open forum with Rick Ponx, defensive coordinator at North Central College from 2:45-3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 in Regents Center Room 224. There will be an open forum with Joe Beschorner, offensive coordinator at Simpson College, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3 in Regents Center Room 224.
'Picture Yourself E-Reading'
LIS invites all Luther staff, faculty and students to "Picture Yourself E-Reading" this J-Term with activities exploring e-reading boundaries and freedoms. Take the E-Book Challenge and log every e-book you read during January.
Join the Virtual E-Book Club and read Thomas More's Utopia. At workshops throughout the month, learn about e-readers, how to borrow e-books from Preus Library and Decorah Public Library, and how to lend your e-books to others. See http://lis.luther.edu/reading to sign up.

LIS e-book workshops will be held in Preus Library and include a 30-minute demonstration, time for questions, exploring different e-readers and apps, and one-on-one assistance from LIS staff. E-reading contest
Attend workshops and log e-books to be entered in Preus Library's e-reading contest. Grand prize is a Kobo-Mini E-Reader, donated by Dragonfly Books. The more you participate, the greater your chances. Being part of the Virtual E-Book Club counts too. The winner will be selected via a random drawing Monday, Jan. 28, with results announced on Preus Library’s Facebook page. The winner will be notified via Norse Mail.
Virtual e-book club
Read Thomas More's Utopia with other members of the Luther community via a new online platform, where everyone reads from the same e-book text. Club members can highlight and annotate text and carry on conversations within the book itself. Participants will also be part of a Google Group, with a face-to-face gathering at the end of January to discuss the experience. To join, email Jennifer Rian <rianje01>.
1/2/13 Biweekly Payroll withholdings
As of the time the 1/2/13 biweekly payroll was processed, Congress had not made a decision about whether the 2013 Social Security tax withholding should return to its normal rate of 6.2 percent of taxable income or remain at the economic stimulus rate of 4.2 percent of taxable income.
Guidance we received regarding this issue indicated we should return to the pre-stimulus withholding rate of 6.2 percent for this first payroll of 2013. If the rate does in fact remain at 4.2 percent for 2013, the Social Security tax withholding for this first 2013 payroll will be adjusted. The refund adjustment will be included with the first payroll after the date we are made aware of the information. The refunded amount will be the difference between the two rates.

Chapel this week
J-term provides an opportunity for new patterns and some space for reflection. Come explore faith through word and song on Mondays, in silent meditation on Wednesdays, and through movement on Fridays. This J-term, listen to God's call to "be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

Poet Athena Kildegaard to teach, give poetry reading
Poet Athena Kildegaard, a lecturer at the University of Minnesota, Morris, will share her remarkable poems in a reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The reading is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Kildegaard, who will teach at Luther in January, wrote a love poem every day for a year. That labor of love resulted in her recent book, "Cloves & Honey." In her first book, "Rare Momentum," the poet composed 62 Fibonaccis, formal poems based on the mathematical sequence of the same name.
Students help Decorah residents Jan. 12, 19
Luther students will help Decorah residents with yard work, snow shoveling and household chores. The service days, God's Helping Hand, are similar to the fall and spring flings sponsored by college ministries.
The event is open to Decorah residents free of charge, but those who are elderly or handicapped will be given priority. Decorah residents can register at 387-1271 or <ministry>. Please provide a brief explanation of the work you would like completed.

Gregory Peterson was organist for the National Lutheran Choir Christmas Festival concerts at the Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis, Dec. 7-8 and Christ Church Cathedral, St. Louis, Dec. 15.
Research conducted by Loren Toussaint and alumni Amy Owen and Alyssa Cheadle was featured in Psychology Today. The research shows that more forgiving individuals live longer. The full story is at: http://www.psychologytoday.
