**UPDATED ANNOUNCEMENT 1/17/2013**Award-winning novelist Jane Hamilton to give reading Jan. 17
Jane Hamilton will join the Luther English department to teach the January term course Adventures in Reading and Writing Fiction. She will also give a reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall on the Luther campus. The reading is open to the public at no charge for admission.
Hamilton’s first two novels, “The Book of Ruth” and “A Map of the World,” were Oprah’s Book Club selections. “The Book of Ruth” also won the PEN/Hemingway Foundation Award for first fiction. Each book was later the basis for a motion picture.
**UPDATED ANNOUNCEMENT 1/16/2013** Football candidate on campus
The campus community is invited to meet a candidate for the head football coaching position at Luther College. There will be an open forum with Jay Davis, assistant football coach at Cornell College, from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 in Room 224 of the Regents Center.

United Way goal surpassed
The Luther College United Way goal of $25,000 has been surpassed! Due to the amazing support of employees and retirees, the Luther community has made a difference in the lives of our neighbors, family and friends. Sustainability-related summer internship available
Do you have students who would be interested in a sustainability-related summer internship? There are 13 different internships available through sustainability, including on-campus and community options. Full descriptions of all the internships, as well as information about how to apply, are available on the sustainability summer internship website.
Health care notice
Luther dependent children are no longer eligible to receive well-child vaccinations at Winneshiek County Public Health due to a change in their policy. Adults continue to be eligible for routine vaccinations (TDAP, Hepatitis B, flu, and pneumonia) at their previous rates. Be assured that the Luther health care council is discussing plan option changes.
Flu shots available
Health Service has flu shots available and are now accepting spouses/significant others as patients; cost is $25. Contact Pamela at Health Service, 387-1045, with questions.
BREATHE
Take time to breathe during J-term. Wellness and College Ministries are sponsoring a wellness initiative that encourages you to take a total of 20 minutes during the day to relax. Attend chapel, take a walk, eat lunch with a friend or read a book are a few examples. During J-term do this 12 times and receive a $15 Book Store gift card. If you are already doing this make six of these activities a new pattern. There are Breathe cards available in departments around campus, or in the Wellness or College Ministries Office to log your activity.

Luther Soccer Winter Skills Clinic
The Luther College men's and women's soccer programs will be offering a Winter Skills Clinic on three consecutive Sunday afternoons: Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 10. Cost is $55 and includes a t-shirt.

Sign up for W-2's online. It is easy to do. For instructions and more information, go to hr.luther.edu. Go to "Forms for Faculty and Staff" and under Tax Forms choose W-2 2012 Options. (Mac users: please do not use the "preview" application to view your W-2.) If you chose the electronic option for your 2011 W-2 you do not need to do it again for 2012. Go to "W-2 electronic consent" under Employee Profile at my.luther.edu to see which option you chose for 2011. Remember - the electronic option is the sustainable option.

Haven't had the opportunity to attend one of the LIS e-book workshops? Never fear... three are yet to come, including a repeat of two workshops from last week. All include a 30-minute demonstration, time for questions, exploration of different e-readers and apps, and one-on-one assistance from LIS staff. Last week's attendees gave the workshops a "thumbs up."

Still time to join the J-term virtual e-book club
There's still time to jump in and read Thomas More's "Utopia" with other members of the Luther community via a new online platform, where everyone reads from the same e-book text. Club members can highlight and annotate text and carry on conversations within the book itself. E-reading contest
Sign up at http://lis.luther.edu/reading to log books you’re e-reading during J-term for a chance to win prizes. Read an e-book or attend a workshop to be entered in the contest. Membership in the virtual e-book club counts too. Grand prize: a Kobo mini e-reader donated by Dragonfly Books. Winners will be selected in a random drawing Jan. 28, announced on Preus Library's Facebook page and notified via Norse Mail.

Labyrinth walk Jan. 18, 25
Luther’s canvas labyrinth will be available to walk through in the CFL Main Hall from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Jan. 18 and 25. There will be a brief orientation at the beginning for those who come at 10:30 a.m. The labyrinth will be available the remaining time with handouts to provide brief background and notes about the labyrinth as a spiritual practice. 'Race to the South Pole' lecture Jan. 15
Marvin Slind will give the presentation "Scott and Amundsen: The Race to the South Pole" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the F.W. Olin Building, Room 102. The presentation is in conjunction with an art exhibit currently on display in the Center for Faith and Life through Jan. 23. Students help Decorah residents Jan. 19
Luther students will help Decorah residents with yard work, snow shoveling and household chores. The service days, God's Helping Hand, are similar to the fall and spring flings sponsored by college ministries.
The event is open to Decorah residents free of charge, but those who are elderly or handicapped will be given priority. Decorah residents can register at 387-1271 or <ministry>. Please provide a brief explanation of the work you would like completed.

Retirement party for Jean Dickman

Oneota Film Festival Jan. 18-20
The fourth annual Oneota Film Festival has announced that it will present 10-15 sets of films including international award winners, as well as panel discussions with filmmakers, specialists and experts. The fourth annual event, which focuses on the critical issues of our time, is set for Jan. 18-20, hosted by Luther College. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day lecture Jan. 21
Ula Taylor, associate professor of African American studies at the University of California-Berkeley will give this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day lecture at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21 in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206.
School Performance Series presents 'Zorro' Jan. 24
A mysterious figure has arrived in town with the flurry of a cape, glint of a sword and flash of a mask; who is this shadowy character? Luther College's School Performance Series is pleased to present two performances of Zorro at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
Discussion and learning themes in the production include the role of the individual in community, leadership and how the creative arts find ways to solve problems.
Thanks to kid-friendly sponsorship from Winneshiek Medical Center and Physician Services by Mayo Clinic Health System, tickets are only $2, available at the Luther College Box Office.
Symphony Orchestra tour homecoming Feb. 3
The Symphony Orchestra will present a tour homecoming concert of works by Wagner, Elgar and Tchaikovsky at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3 in the Center for Faith and Life as the last stop on their January 2013 tour.
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Princeton University Press has just published "How to Run a Country: An Ancient Guide for Modern Leaders," a collection of political wisdom from Marcus Cicero translated and edited by Philip Freeman of the classics department.
Three five-minute documentary films produced by Thomas C. Johnson and Michael Crowe ’13 will be screened at the upcoming Oneota Film Festival at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 in Olin 102. The films, "Hours with Amanda," "Hours with Ben" and "Hours with Novian," profile Luther faculty members Amanda Hamp '01, Ben Moore ’02 and Novian Whitsitt.
Four films, "Garden Guardians," "Volare," "From Crop to Co-op" and "Saving Creativity," produced by Luther students in video production courses taught by Thomas C. Johnson will be screened at the upcoming Oneota Film Festival at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 in Olin 102.

Donations for Thornton family
We continue to ask for the community's prayers for Rick Thornton and his sons Travis and Ross as their home was destroyed in December by fire. They greatly appreciate the expressions of support they have already received. The Office for College Ministries will continue to receive donations until Feb. 15. A shuttle service is being provided for Luther College community members and alumni to attend Johanna Olson's Celebration of Life service in St. Paul. Sustainability tip
In an effort to promote consumer appliance recycling, the City of Decorah is providing a weekend during which all area residents may purchase a sticker that will enable them to drop off major household electronics and appliances such as televisions, refrigerators and ovens.
The drop off site will be the lower Oneota Coop parking lot at the corner of Heivly Street and River Street. City crews will be available to assist with unloading.
Stickers must be placed on the appliance or item and may be purchased between now and Friday, Jan. 25 at City Hall or the days of the event on site. The stickers cost $10 for all appliances, TVs and electronics. Computer CPUs and accessories may be bundled.
The two-day event will take place from 9 a.m.-noon, Jan. 26 and 2-4 p.m., Jan. 27. Open to all city and county residents. Additional questions may be directed to City Hall or Chad Bird, 382-3651.
