Presidential finalists

Faculty, staff and emeriti are encouraged to attend an open candidate forum with presidential finalists Dr. Mark Hagerott and Dr. Ann Hill Duin. There are two opportunities so that as many people as possible can participate. Forums for Dr. Hagerott will be held from 2-3:15 and 4-5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 in Valders 206. Forums for Dr. Duin will be held from 2-3:15 and 4-5:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 in Valders 206. Candidate files can be viewed on Katie in the "President-2012" folder under the course called "candidate searches."

If unable to attend, a recorded version of the open forums will be uploaded to Katie the following day. See the "President-2012" folder under the course called "candidate searches".

KATIE server renamed

As announced in the New Katie Faculty Workshops we are planning on renaming the KATIE server for 2013SP and beyond (previously addressed as katie-23.luther.edu) to "katie.luther.edu" and the KATIE server used up through 2013JT (previously known as katie.luther.edu) to "katie-19.luther.edu". Capsulizing:

We are expecting this change to take effect on Tuesday, Jan. 29.  

Prominent links will be posted on both sites to redirect to the other sites in case of confusion.

Informational meeting for summer student supervisors Jan. 30

There will be an informational meeting for summer student supervisors in Main 111 at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30.  Please plan to attend if you will or may be supervising students this summer.

Aquatic Center construction update

Construction is progressing on schedule for the Aquatic Center. The roof and windows have all been installed and progress is being made on the concrete foundation for the pool structure. The Mrytha vinyl covered stainless steel panels have arrived from Italy and are waiting to be installed. The walls and ceilings of the natatorium have been painted. We expect completion of the pool in late May.

Employee Blood Screenings March 7, 19 and Apr. 18

Health Service will be holding Employee Blood Screenings Thursday, March 7, Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, Apr. 18. It is preferred that appointments are requested for the earlier dates first. Since this is an odd year screenings will not be paid for. Register online at  health.luther.edu, click on Employee Blood Screening and follow directions.

Comprehensive Fee Set for 2013-14

In a conference call meeting the Board of Regents approved a comprehensive fee increase of 4.2% for 2013-14, increasing the comprehensive fee from $42,170 to $43,940. Tuition will increase 3.8% ($1,380) and room and board, 5.9% ($390).

Business card deadline Feb. 6
The publications office is accepting orders for business cards online at www.luther.edu/printwork. Order quantity increments of 250 are preferred. Send a sample of an old card via campus mail to AJ Perling, <perlad01>. Submit orders by Wednesday, Feb. 6. The publications office gathers business card orders at the start of each semester; please note that orders printed individually at other times cost considerably more to run.

Residence Life office seeking student staff applications

Do you know someone that would make a good student leader on campus? The Residence Life office is beginning the student staff selection process for 2013-14. There will be mandatory informational sessions for interested individuals from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 and from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 in Valders 206. Alumna to give Spring Convocation Address Jan. 31

Luther College alumna Vanessa (Grima Baldacchino) Frazier, Malta's ambassador to Belgium, will present the college's Spring Convocation Address at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. Ambassador Frazier will talk about the lessons she learned at Luther, her experiences since graduating and her work during the Arab Spring uprisings.

Luther College SAC Spotlight presents singer Matt Moberg Feb. 1

Singer Matt Moberg, featured on MTV's "Jersey Shore" and "Friends Zone" will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1 in Marty's Cafe.

Symphony Orchestra tour homecoming Feb. 3

The Symphony Orchestra will present a tour homecoming concert of works by Wagner, Elgar and Tchaikovsky at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3 in the Center for Faith and Life as the last stop on their January 2013 tour.

The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Nordic Choir tour homecoming Feb. 5

Nordic Choir will perform a tour homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5 in the Center for Faith and Life.

The performance by the 78-member Nordic Choir is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Barbizon art prints to be displayed

Luther art students have curated a show from more than 160 Barbizon prints given to Luther during the past year. The exhibit, "The Barbizon School: An Invented France," is on display Feb. 8-March 22 at the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in Luther's Center for the Arts. In conjunction with the show, Gabriel Weisberg will give the Gerhard Marcks Art History Lecture at Luther on March 13.

10th Annual Black History Conference Feb. 6-7 

"Body Politic: Cultural Identities and Representations of Black Women's Sexuality" is the theme for the 10th annual Black History Month Conference. Dorothy Roberts will deliver the plenary lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6. Roberts is a professor of law, sociology, and civil rights at the Univ. of Pennsylvania and author of "Killing the Black Body: Race Reproduction and the Meaning of Liberty."

'As You Like It' book discussion Feb. 8

To prepare for the upcoming Center Stage Series "As You Like It" performance, join a book discussion of this delightful, gender-bending, pastoral, love journey. Discussion will be held 4-5:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 in Main 111 and led by Kate Narveson, Erik Baack, and Andy Hageman. Free copies of the book are available in the Book Shop. Sponsored by Mark Z. Muggli's "Our Shakespeare" project.

Celebrate the Year of the Snake

There will be a Lunar New Year celebration at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 in Peace Dining Room. Share traditions and welcome the Year of the Snake. A short program will be followed by light refreshments and conversation. Sponsored by College Ministries, Diversity Center, ASAA and IFSA.

Visiting Instructor Brad Schultz to perform organ recital Feb. 10

Brad Schultz, visiting instructor of organ and sacred music at Luther College, will perform an organ recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 in the Center for Faith and Life main recital hall. The recital will feature organ pieces associated with the Epiphany season of the church year, which comes to a close on that Sunday, including a major work on the hymn "O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright."

Registration open for Wii bowling teams

Sign up now for Wii Bowling League to be held Feb. 11-March 9 in the Book Shop. Teams of four will bowl once a week. All students, faculty and staff may join. Center Stage Series presents 'As You Like It' Feb. 15

“As You Like It" will be presented at the Luther College Center for Faith and Life Main Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. Tickets are on sale at the Luther Box Office for $25, $23 for seniors ages 65 and up, and $15 for youth age 4-18. The Acting Company will also discuss their production from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 in the CFL Recital Hall. 

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Xiao Hu, Luther assistant professor, and Du Huang, Luther associate professor, performed a duo piano recital at the Missouri Southern State University. They presented a piano master class and did an interview with its campus newspaper.

Stu Johnston presented "Engaging College Men In Community Service" at the Student Involvement and Employment Office Mid-Year Training Retreat at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Jan. 21. 

COMMUNITY

Donations for Thornton family

We continue to ask for the community's prayers for Rick Thornton and his sons Travis and Ross as their home was destroyed in December by fire. They greatly appreciate the expressions of support they have already received. The Office for College Ministries will continue to receive donations until Feb. 15. Donations and expressions of support can be sent through campus mail or by mail to Office for College Ministries, Luther College, 700  College Dr., Decorah, IA 52101. Please note, donations are not tax deductible as they are being directed to an individual. Checks can be made out to Luther College with "Thornton" in the memo line. Funds will be handled through the Luther College Student Congregation.

To Jan Schnitzler and Judy Schnitzler on the death of Jan's father and Judy's father-in-law, John Schnitzler, age 91 of Decorah, who died Jan. 22.

To the family of Naomi Evelyn Linnell, wife of John Linnell, academic dean, vice president and provost from 1963-73, and mother of John '78 and Anna '86. Naomi served for many years as the assistant director of the Division of College and University Services in Higher Education for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.
