Presidential finalists
Faculty, staff and emeriti are encouraged to attend an open candidate forum with presidential finalists Dr. Mark Hagerott and Dr. Ann Hill Duin. There are two opportunities so that as many people as possible can participate. Forums for Dr. Hagerott will be held from 2-3:15 and 4-5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 in Valders 206. Forums for Dr. Duin will be held from 2-3:15 and 4-5:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 in Valders 206. COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Health plan offers incentive credit
The Luther health plan offers incentive credit to employees to encourage self-auditing of eligible medical bills to ensure the amount billed by provider accurately reflects services/supplies received by employee/dependent. When employee’s self-audit results in elimination/reduction of charges, 25 percent of amount eliminated or reduced will be paid to employee ($10 minimum savings) provided the savings are accurately documented. Submit copy of incorrect bill and corrected billing with reduction in charges to Lora Steil, Main 29. $500/calendar year credit limit.
Employee Blood Screenings March 7, 19 and Apr. 18
Health Service will hold employee blood screenings Thursday, March 7, Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, Apr. 18. It is preferred that appointments are requested for the earlier dates first. Since this is an odd year screenings will not be paid for. Register online at health.luther.edu, click on "Employee Blood Screening" and follow directions.
Comprehensive Fee Set for 2013-14
In a conference call meeting the Board of Regents approved a comprehensive fee increase of 4.2 percent for 2013-14, increasing the comprehensive fee from $42,170 to $43,940. Tuition will increase 3.8 percent ($1,380) and room and board, 5.9 percent ($390).
Business card deadline Feb. 6
The publications office is accepting orders for business cards online at www2.luther.edu/printwork. Order quantity increments of 250 are preferred. Send a sample of an old card via campus mail to AJ Perling, <perlad01>. Submit orders by Wednesday, Feb. 6. The publications office gathers business card orders at the start of each semester; please note that orders printed individually at other times cost considerably more to run.

'The Space Between Us' selected as Paideia 2013 community read
The Paideia 111-112 Planning Committee has chosen "The Space Between Us," a novel written by Thrity Umrigar, for the 2013 community read. Umrigar is a journalist turned college professor currently teaching at Case Western Reserve University. She will be the Sept. 2013 convocation speaker. Abstracts invited for student/faculty workshop on Post-Conflict Reconstruction, Reconciliation and Peace Building, to be held April 12-13 at Illinois Wesleyan University. Opportunity for intellectual engagement for undergraduate students who are pursuing independent and/or honors research in human rights related areas and their faculty mentors. Encourage students to send in study away photos
The Luther Alumni Magazine is again seeking student photos from study away experiences over the past year. Encourage students who went on a study away program between February 2012 and February 2013 to submit 4-5 photos taken during their experience. Students should submit a few sentences telling what program they were on, their class year, and what prompted them to take each photo. Some of the submitted photos will appear in the spring print issue of the alumni magazine, and many more will appear with the online version of the magazine. Send photos to <ellen.modersohn>.
Yoga classes for faculty and staff
Yoga classes for faculty/staff will be held Monday-Wednesday and Fridays from 12:30-1:15. All classes held in the dance studio of the Regent's Center. Classes begin Feb. 8.
Fast and feast in community during Lent
The community is invited to fast on Wednesdays during Lent from Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13 through Wednesday, March 20. As a way of sharing in a core spiritual practice of Lent, you are invited to choose a fast for Wednesdays in Lent. Fast from a meal, a particular treat (coffee, chocolate), or do an electronic fast (stay off Facebook, avoid texting, turn off your cell). Mark the day of fasting in community at Wednesday Eucharist in the CFL with a simple
communion service at 9:30 p.m. followed by a time of fellowship and soup and bread to break the fast.

Heidi Brende Leathwood to perform guest piano recital Feb. 6
Heidi Brende Leathwood, nationally renowned chamber and solo pianist, will perform a guest piano recital at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 in the Noble Recital Hall. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will highlight etudes from around the world spanning the 17th-20th centuries. Featured composers include Bach, William Bolcom, Ohana, Claude Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Franz Liszt.
10th annual Black History Conference Feb. 6-7
"Body Politic: Cultural Identities and Representations of Black Women's Sexuality" is the theme for the 10th annual Black History Month Conference. Dorothy Roberts will deliver the plenary lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6. Roberts is a professor of law, sociology, and civil rights at the Univ. of Pennsylvania and author of "Killing the Black Body: Race Reproduction and the Meaning of Liberty."
Faculty Artist Series: Andrew Wannigman Feb. 7
Andrew Wannigman will perform a voice recital at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Jenson-Noble Recital Hall. After graduating from Luther in 2007, Wannigman returned in the Fall of 2011 to teach voice at Luther as a faculty member. The program will include Handel's aria "Sibilar gli angui d'alletto," from the opera "Rinaldo," as well as the popular Vaughan Williams "Songs of Travel."
'As You Like It' book discussion Feb. 8
To prepare for the upcoming Center Stage Series "As You Like It" performance, join a book discussion of this delightful, gender-bending, pastoral, love journey. Discussion will be held 4-5:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 in Main 111 and led by Kate Narveson, Erik Baack and Andy Hageman. Free copies of the book are available in the Book Shop. Sponsored by Mark Z. Muggli's "Our Shakespeare" project.
Faculty Artist Series: Kylie Toomer Feb. 8
Kylie Toomer will perform "Fifty Shades of Love," a solo voice recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. Through music by Mozart, Robert Schumann, Claude Debussy and Jake Heggie, Toomer will explore the various forms love takes in life.

Mat Moberg, a Rhode Island magician who brilliantly blends hilarious college humor with insanely shocking magic, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 in Marty's CyberCafé in the Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther College Campus.
Faculty Artist Series: Brad Schultz Feb. 10
Brad Schultz will perform an organ recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 in the Center for Faith and Life. The recital features organ pieces associated with the Epiphany season of the church year, which comes to a close on that Sunday, including a major work on the hymn "O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright."
J-term class to present lecture demonstration Feb. 10
Students will share their insights as they introduce the various masks explored during their J-term directed research with Robert Larson. Michael Ehrecke, Sydney Kjerstad, Anna Murray and Katrina Hanson will present a lecture demonstration titled "The Actor and the Mask: A Playful Journey" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 in the Center for the Arts. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Ecumenical Ash Wednesday service Feb. 13
The community is welcome to an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 in the CFL Main Hall. The service is hosted by Luther and St. Benedict’s Parish. Begin the Lenten season with the imposition of ashes and sharing Holy Communion. The disciplines of Lent include prayer, fasting, and charity. There will be a Ash Wednesday offering collection that will benefit the ELCA Malaria Campaign and the Decorah Area Food Pantry at First Lutheran Church.
Faculty Artist Series: Heather Armstrong Feb. 14
Heather Armstrong will perform a solo oboe recital at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 in the Noble Recital Hall. The program features works composed by Armstrong's friends and colleagues with their works framed by two Baroque pieces by G.P. Telemann and J.S. Bach. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Center Stage Series presents 'As You Like It' Feb. 15
“As You Like It" will be presented at the Luther College Center for Faith and Life Main Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. Tickets are on sale at the Luther Box Office for $25, $23 for seniors ages 65 and up, and $15 for youth age 4-18. The Acting Company will also discuss their production from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 in the CFL Recital Hall.
Gospel Sunday Feb. 17

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Jon Jensen has been named director of Luther's new Center for Sustainable Communities. Jensen will lead the new center through an initial planning process and will be responsible for guiding the center's work in the areas of food and wellness, energy, education and outreach, and land stewardship.
Sean D. Burke's first book, a revision of his dissertation, will be published by Fortress Press as "Queering the Ethiopian Eunuch: Strategies of Ambiguity in Acts."
Pianist Jessica Paul recently collaborated with soprano Christine Seitz in a recital on the campus of University of Missouri at Columbia. The recital program, "American Images," featured art songs by American composers, including a piece by composer Paul Seitz, titled "And Be Beautiful" (text by Galway Kinnell), scored for soprano, English horn, cello, and piano. Seitz is a former member of the voice faculty of Luther.
Paul R. Savariappan's essay titled, "Statistical Analysis for a Three Service Point Tandem Queue with Blocking," was published by the Institute of Applied Statistics Sri Lanka in Volume 13 of the "Sri Lankan Journal of Applied Statistics."
Robert Christman was named the inaugural Kermit O. and Jane E. Hanson Professor in History at Luther's Spring Convocation Jan. 31. The professorship is a three-year award to a member of the Luther faculty who honors the values and importance of the subject of history. It is named in honor of Kermit O. Hanson, Luther class of 1938, and Jane E. Hanson, Luther class of 1939.
Tony Guzman and Luther students Gavin Colahan, Karla Dietmeyer, Ted Olsen, Elliott Ostrowski, Stephen Uhl and Andrew Withers will perform in the Water Street Music Series “Jazz Caravan” Friday, Feb. 8 in Hotel Winneshiek’s Steyer Opera House. Doors open at 7 p.m. with music at 7:30 p.m. A cash bar and free snacks will be available. The community is invited to take a journey through jazz’s hip, sultry, syncopated sounds - from New Orleans to New York to Rio to Decorah.

Donations for Thornton family
We continue to ask for the community's prayers for Rick Thornton and his sons Travis and Ross as their home was destroyed in December by fire. They greatly appreciate the expressions of support they have already received. The Office for College Ministries will continue to receive donations until Feb. 15. Bruce Larson, who has worked at Luther for 12 years, has announced his retirement effective March 1. In the weeks ahead we look forward to thanking Bruce for his dedicated service to the college.
