Board of Regents meets this week
The Board of Regents will hold their winter meeting Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23. Agenda items include the presidential search, tenure decisions and the new Center for Nordic Studies. Pre-meeting materials can be viewed at http://katie.luther.edu. Look for the Board of Regents site under the "My Courses" block.
Staff meetings Feb. 27 and 28
At the February staff meeting, President Torgerson will provide a recap of the Board of Regents meeting, staff who served on the presidential search committee will share reflections and Derek Hartl will talk about the scope and variety of admissions visit days. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28.
Facilities Services warns of icy sidewalks and streets
Facilities Services reminds everyone to be cautious when walking on campus sidewalks and streets. Some of the areas have ice on them due to the melting snow refreezing overnight. The grounds crew is working early in the morning to check the known problem areas. Contact Facilities Services, 387-1146, to report a patch of ice that needs an application of sand or ice melt.
COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Health Services cancels spring semester blood screenings
Due to a staffing shortage in Health Services, all employee blood screenings will be cancelled in the spring. Winneshiek Medical Center is available for wellness screenings any weekday morning 7 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday. Contact Winneshiek Medical Center with questions, 382-9671.
McElroy student/faculty research projects
The Iowa College Foundation announces a call for proposals for student/faculty research projects for 2013-14. Student participants must be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2013. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student, or team of students and a sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of a credible research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award is $2,000. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals. Internal deadline for proposals is April 10. Forms are available in the Dean’s Office, Union 262, or by contacting Janine Brandt at <brandtja>.
Speech and Debate Center hours
The Speech and Debate Center is open from 5-10 p.m., Sundays-Thursdays for student use. Students can make an appointment on the SDC Katie site and receive help polishing presentations for class. Students will be given a purple sheet with comments to return to their professor as proof of SDC tutoring. Email <SDC> for further information.
Admissions office seeking student ambassadors
Admissions is in the process of hiring next year's student ambassadors. Students will serve as office assistants and tour guides. Think about students who would do a great job of representing their Luther experience to prospective students and encourage them to come to the Admissions Visit Center for more information and an application. Must be next year's sophomores, juniors or seniors. Application deadline is Feb. 25. For more information contact Marty Berg at <bergmart>.
SAC spring concert announced
SAC Concerts presents Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with special guest Kelley James on Tuesday, April 2 in the Regents Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. and concert begins at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $25. Tickets are now on sale for Luther students with CAF and public sales begin Thursday, Feb. 21. As part of this year's Lenten series—"Leading from Within: Reflections on Leadership from the Gospel of Luke"—choirs, ensembles and others will offer music reflections each day in chapel. Men's basketball earned a bye in the first round of the IIAC tournament quarterfinals, and will play in the semifinals at home at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. With a win, the Norse will host the finals at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24.
Women's basketball will take on Dubuque at 6 p.m. Feb. 19, for the IIAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Sports results
Women's basketball lost to Coe College 56-64 on Feb. 13, and to Wartburg, 63-70, Feb. 16.
Men's basketball defeated Coe College, 60-54, in overtime, and defeated Wartburg, 78-61.
Wrestling defeated Cornell Feb. 18, 21-15.
Men's tennis lost to Carlton College Feb. 16, 3-6, and defeated UW-La Crosse, 8-1, Feb. 16.
Women's swimming and diving won their seventh consecutive Liberal Arts Championship this past weekend. The men took second. Clare Slagel, '16, was named Female Swimmer of the Year; Zoe Johnson '16, was named Female Diver of the Year; David Happel was named Diving Coach of the Year; and Lance Huber was named Swimming Coach of the Year. Johnson has qualified for the NCAA III Regional Diving Championships. Johnson will be competing at the San Antonio Regional March 1-2 at Trinity University.
Men's track and field had a first place finish in their 4x400 relay at the University of Northern Iowa Dome Open Feb. 15. The foursome of Nick Clark '13, Erik Ohlrogge '16, Peter Krumm '16, and Devin Gilbertson '14, was clocked at 3:32.12. In women's track and field, Sarah Sindelar '14, and Tricia Serres '16, headlined Luther's efforts at the University of Northern Iowa Dome Open. Sindelar established a new school record in the 60 meter dash, 8.21, and Serres did the same in the mile, 4:55.05. First place finishes were also recorded by Addy Rickels '13 in the 600 at 1:47.88, Kayla Uphoff '14, in the 1,000 at 3:12.85, and winning the 4 x 400 in 4:11.55 were Marea Holkesvik '16, Serres, Kelsey Strand '15, and Maggie Pierson'14. Rickels also placed second in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 5 inches that ranks fourth on Luther's all-time indoor list. Complete results at: http://www.wayzataresults.com/event/show/34922192.
Taylor Johnson '14, scored her 1,000th career point during Luther’s final home game on Saturday, Feb. 16. Johnson becomes the 11th player in Luther women’s basketball history to achieve this milestone.
Silent meditation Tuesdays
Silent meditation sittings will take place every Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. in the Melanchthon Room, CFL 205. The sittings will be led by either Shoken Winecoff of the local Ryumonji Zen Monastery, professors Gereon Kopf or Scott Hurley, or Luther student Teresa Zaffarano. 'Don't Just Say Something, Sit There' Feb. 19
The interfaith, contemplative Journey Conversations Project at Luther will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 in the CFL Recital Hall. The Journey Conversation Project equips students, faculty and staff to shape societies that are more civil and just, simply through the way we speak, listen, and are present to others. We'll explore how and why Journey Conversations works and why we should incorporate its practices into our lives. Lecture by Amy Zalk Larson, Sheila Radford-Hill and Sandhya Purohit Caton. The lecture series is sponsored by the Paideia Endowment and is open to the public.
Lenten fast to raise money for ELCA Malaria Campaign on Feb. 20
As part of the 2013 Lenten journey, students are invited to participate in a fast on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Students may sign up in advance to give up either lunch, dinner or both meals on that day. Faculty Artist Series: Brent Dodson
Brent Dodson, visiting assistant professor of music, will explore the influence of song and dance traditions in his trumpet recital at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.
The event is open to the public with no charge of admission.
The program will feature a variety of music, including works by Libby Larsen, Manuel de Falla, Eric Ewazen, Somei Satoh and Louis Armstrong.
Center Stage Series: Cirque Ziva to perform Feb. 21
Come and be amazed by an array of centuries-old Chinese acrobatic art with Cirque Ziva. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in the CFL Main Hall. The young 20-person cast will dazzle audience members by feats of flexibility, juggling hats, balancing cups, spinning plates, diving through hoops and much more. Tickets for the performance are on sale at the Luther Box Office.
Betts to serve on panel following film screening Feb. 23
Representatives of the Ioway Nations and film participants, including Colin Betts, will take part in a question and answer session following the screening of "Lost Nation: The Ioway 2" and "Lost Nation: The Ioway 3." This world premiere event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Kelly and Tammy Rundle of Fourth Wall Films, producers of the Emmy® nominated documentary "Country School: One Room-One Nation" and the award-winning "Lost Nation: The Ioway 1" will premiere their new documentaries at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History, Macbride Hall Auditorium in Iowa City at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.
Vandana Shiva to present spring Farwell Distinguished Lecture Feb. 26
Environmental activist Vandana Shiva will present the spring Farwell Distinguished Lecture, "Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. The community is also welcome to join Shiva for a conversation in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26. Shiva advocates for food crop diversity, necessary for the conservation of traditional agrarian societies such as the region of India where she grew up.
Diversity Center and Center for Global Learning to host webinar Feb. 27
"What Does an Internationalized Curriculum Look Like? The Promise of Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum," a NAFSA webinar, is open to the community for no charge from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Mott Room. The webinar is co-sponsored by Luther's Diversity Center and Center for Global Learning.
Religion Forum speaker Neela Bhattacharya Saxena to present Feb. 28
Neela Bhattacharya Saxena, associate professor of English at Nassau Community College in Long Island, N.Y. will present a Religion Forum lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the CFL Recital Hall. Saxena's presentation is titled, "Gynocentric India and Visions of Kali: A Liberatory Philosophical Praxis." Saxena will also speak in daily chapel at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1. Support for her visit comes from the Religion department and the Lecture and Fine Arts Fund.
Student/faculty collaborative film screening Feb. 28
Three five-minute documentary films produced by Thomas C. Johnson and Michael Crowe ’13, will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in Olin 102. The films, "Hours with Amanda," "Hours with Ben" and "Hours with Novian," profile Luther faculty members Amanda Hamp '01, Ben Moore ’02, and Novian Whitsitt. A brief question and answer session will follow the screening.
Ethnic Arts Festival March 2
"A Wedding Story" is the theme for the 2013 Ethnic Arts Festival that will be held Saturday, March 2. Schedule includes a country fair from 1-4 p.m. in the Oneota Market, Ethnic Cuisine from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room and entertainment at 7 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets for the ethnic cuisine meal are $12 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-10, and $5 for students with CAF. 25th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum March 8-10
The 25th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum will be held March 8-10 in Minneapolis. Friday's program, with a focus on business and peacemaking, features Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, known as the father of microcredit. Saturday looks at the relationship of health and science to global security and includes an address by Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health. Sunday is Global Day, featuring Tawakkol Karman, the first Arab woman, and youngest person at age 32, to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Luther will charter a round trip bus to transport people for Saturday's program. Limited seats remain. Register for the forum at http://nobelpeaceprizeforum.
Student Recitals
Hannah Axt '14 will perform a flute recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2 in the Noble Recital Hall. A reception will follow the performance. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Kristy Gould, along with Luther student co-authors Karl Gilbertson '11, Andrew Hrvol '10, Joseph Nelson '09, Abigail Seyfer '10, and Rose Brantner '10, and Alan Kamil from the University of Nebraska, had the paper "Differences in Relative Hippocampus Volume and Number of Hippocampus Neurons among Five Corvid Species" published in the journal "Brain, Behavior, and Evolution."
Congratulations to Cate Anderson '13 and Maggie Steinberg '12, who have been selected as the Luther College Peace Scholars for 2013. They will spend seven weeks this summer studying peace and conflict resolution in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway. Luther is part of a six-college consortium that sponsors an annual summer Peace Scholars program designed to deepen students’ understanding of the central issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace.
Xiao Hu and Du Huang were featured guest artists at the 2013 Chicago Duo Piano Mini Festival hosted on the campus of the Chicago Institute of Music. The duo performed a recital and held a teaching demonstration for each of the age categories in a master class during the festival.
Nancy K. Barry will perform as the Featured Artist at the next ArtHaus Poetry Slam, Friday, Feb. 22, held at the Decorah Elks Lodge. Following the Featured Artist, others are invited to sign up to perform two minutes or less of their own poetry in the non-competitive "Original Voices," or in the "Slam" — a good-natured competition complete with prizes.
