Center for Nordic Studies established, named
The Luther College Board of Regents announced at its Feb. 23 meeting that a Center for Nordic Studies will be established at Luther and named the Richard L. and Judith A. Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies.
O. Jay and Patricia Tomson, of Mason City, Iowa, have committed to Luther $1.25 million to endow a chair within the center, matching $1.25 million to be raised by the college by May 31, 2014.
The center will provide a programmatic vision to build on the strengths and resources already available on campus in order to forge new ties with Scandinavia, serving students who want to connect their interest in Nordic Studies with a range of disciplines including environmental science and sustainability, immigration and multiculturalism, peace studies, health care, banking, political science, economics and social work.
Staff meetings Feb. 27 and 28
At the February staff meeting, President Torgerson will provide a recap of the Board of Regents meeting, staff who served on the presidential search committee will share reflections and Derek Hartl will talk about the scope and variety of admissions visit days. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28.
Tenure and promotion announcement
Congratulations to the following faculty members who were granted tenure by the Board of Regents at the Feb. 22-23 meeting: Eric Baack, Sean Burke, Allen Hightower and Richard Mtisi. Professors Baack, Burke and Mtisi were also promoted to associate professor.

Facilities Services warns of icy sidewalks and streets
Facilities Services reminds everyone to be cautious when walking on campus sidewalks and streets. Some of the areas have ice on them due to the melting snow refreezing overnight. The grounds crew is working early in the morning to check the known problem areas. Contact Facilities Services, 387-1146, to report a patch of ice that needs an application of sand or ice melt.
2012 flexible spending account dollars eligible through March 15
Flexible spending account dollars deducted from employee paychecks during 2012 may be used for eligible expenses through March 15, 2013. Claims for these dollars must be submitted to Midwest Group Benefits by March 31, 2013.
Student senate funding

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced that Luther cross country student-athletes Jayne Cole '13, Maggie Pierson '14, Tricia Serres '17, Christina Storlie '13, Marty Mitchell '13 and Austin Bauer '14 have earned 2012 Division III All-Academic Cross Country status.
Men's basketball lost in the Feb. 22 IIAC tournament semifinals to Wartburg, 57-62.
Women's track and field earned second place and men's track and field earned sixth in the IIAC Indoor Championships Feb. 23, hosted in Dubuque.
Luther sustainability announces 2013 Energy Competition Feb. 25- March 15
Encourage students to compete on behalf of their residence hall to reduce energy and water use and win the 2013 Energy Competition. Black-out events will be hosted by sustainability representatives in each hall. A $500 prize will be awarded to the residence hall that conserves the most electricity and water combined, and a $200 prize will be awarded to the second place residence hall. $10 gift cards to local Decorah businesses will be awarded to one eligible student from each residence hall each week of the competition. Vandana Shiva to present spring Farwell Distinguished Lecture Feb. 26
Environmental activist Vandana Shiva will present the spring Farwell Distinguished Lecture, "Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. The community is also welcome to join Shiva for a conversation in the CRH at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26. Shiva advocates for food crop diversity, necessary for the conservation of traditional agrarian societies such as the region of India where she grew up.
Münster program informational meeting Feb. 27
The next Münster semester will be spring 2014 and applications are currently being accepted in the Center for Global Learning. An informational meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Language Learning Center, located on the second floor of Main. The Münster semester is one of Luther’s oldest study abroad programs. Students receive credit for four Luther courses, including two courses in German and two courses taught in English-one of which counts as Paideia 2 for juniors and seniors. "What Does an Internationalized Curriculum Look Like? Religion Forum speaker Neela Bhattacharya Saxena to present Feb. 28
Neela Bhattacharya Saxena, associate professor of English at Nassau Community College in Long Island, N.Y., will present a Religion Forum lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the CRH. Saxena's presentation is titled, "Gynocentric India and Visions of Kali: A Liberatory Philosophical Praxis." Saxena will also speak in daily chapel at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1. Support for her visit comes from the Religion department and the Lecture and Fine Arts Fund.
Student/faculty collaborative film screening Feb. 28
Three five-minute documentary films produced by Thomas C. Johnson and Michael Crowe ’13, will be screened at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in Olin 102. The films, "Hours with Amanda," "Hours with Ben" and "Hours with Novian," profile Luther faculty members Amanda Hamp '01, Ben Moore ’02, and Novian Whitsitt. A brief question and answer session will follow the screening.
Faculty Artist Series: Miko Kominami Feb. 28
Miko Kominami will perform a "Bach and Rach" piano recital at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Noble Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
"Bach and Rach," will feature J.S. Bach's Partita in E minor for solo piano and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. Xiao Hu, Luther assistant professor of music, will assist Kominami on piano.
The Dating Game postponed to March 1
The Dating Game, sponsored by SAC Special Events, has been postponed due to the rescheduling of the men's IIAC basketball tournament game. Faculty Artist Series: Collaborative faculty voice recital March 1
The Luther College voice faculty will present a collaborative recital in honor of composers Benjamin Britten, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner 7 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the NRH. "A Wedding Story" is the theme for the 2013 Ethnic Arts Festival that will be held Saturday, March 2. Habitat for Humanity fundraiser March 4

Center Stage Series to present 'First Person: Seeing America' March 5
The history of our country's extraordinary people will be brought to life through words, live music and iconic images in the Center Stage Series performance of "First Person: Seeing America." 25th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum March 8-10
The 25th annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum will be held March 8-10 in Minneapolis. Friday's program, with a focus on business and peacemaking, features Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, known as the father of microcredit. Saturday looks at the relationship of health and science to global security and includes an address by Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health. Sunday is Global Day, featuring Tawakkol Karman, the first Arab woman, and youngest person at age 32, to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Faculty Artist Series: Guest recitalist Christine Kim to join Eric Kutz and Phuc Phan March 10
Christine Kim, assistant professor of cello at Middle Tennessee State University, will join Eric Kutz and Phuc Phan '13 in a cello recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program, titled "The Cello Suites of Benjamin Britten," will feature the three performers each playing one suite for solo cello by Britten.
2013 Oen Fellow to visit Luther March 10-13
Winnifred Sullivan, Luther's Oen Fellow for the 2013 spring semester, will visit campus March 10-13. During her visit, Sullivan will host the Oen Fellowship brown-bag discussion at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 in the Borlaug Room of Dahl Centennial Union and the Oen Fellowship Lecture at 6:30 p.m. in Room 102 of Olin. Gregory Peterson played an all Bach recital as part of the "Bach's Lunch" organ recital series at Wartburg College Friday, Feb. 15. The program included the monumental Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major and several compositions based on Lenten hymns.
Ann Sponberg Peterson was a presenter at the North American Conference on Christian Philanthropy in Orlando, Fla., in early February. Her session was titled "Understanding Legacy Giving: Inviting These Transformative Gifts."
S. Brookhart Shields received a "Better Future for Iowans" grant. The grant will allow her and undergraduate students to use the research facilities at the University of Iowa.
Jennifer Rian was interviewed in Issue 91 of the Council on Library and Information Resources publication. Rian spoke about her position as an innovative services librarian and the impact of her work in a liberal arts setting. Zoe Johnson '16, qualified for the NCAA III Regional Diving Championships and will be competing March 1-2 in San Antonio, Texas.
The "My Backyard" feature in the March/April issue of Iowa Outdoors features a two-page spread about Luther's sustainability efforts. The magazine says: "With Iowa’s largest solar array, wind power and off-grid student housing, Luther College in Decorah is a green inspiration."

Fundraiser: Preceptor Zeta sorority is having a “clean out your pockets” cash fundraiser for Darrin Walter, owner of Decorah Cleaners, to assist with medical expenses. In December 2012 Darrin had a simultaneous kidney and pancreas organ transplant at Rochester Methodist Hospital.
