ANNOUNCEMENTS
New Facilities Services director named
Jay Uthoff, manager of trade services at Luther, has been named Facilities Services director. Uthoff assumed his position Feb. 27. Thanks to the search committee and to everyone who participated in the search process.
Center for Nordic Studies established, named
The Luther College Board of Regents announced at its Feb. 23 meeting that a Center for Nordic Studies will be established at Luther and named the Richard L. and Judith A. Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies.
O. Jay and Patricia Tomson, of Mason City, Iowa, have committed to Luther $1.25 million to endow a chair within the center, matching $1.25 million to be raised by the college by May 31, 2014.
The center will provide a programmatic vision to build on the strengths and resources already available on campus in order to forge new ties with Scandinavia, serving students who want to connect their interest in Nordic Studies with a range of disciplines including environmental science and sustainability, immigration and multiculturalism, peace studies, health care, banking, political science, economics and social work.
Tenure and promotion announcement
Congratulations to the following faculty members who were granted tenure by the Board of Regents at the Feb. 22-23 meeting: Eric Baack, Sean Burke, Allen Hightower and Richard Mtisi. Professors Baack, Burke and Mtisi were also promoted to associate professor.

Routine well child immunization benefit amended
The routine well child immunization benefit in the Luther health plan has been amended for children through age six. It now includes 100 percent coverage for immunizations included in the recommendations and criteria established by the United States Preventive Services Task Force. Staff can view their vacation, sick and personal day balances by signing into my.luther.edu. Click on the "Employees" tab. The employee profile section has a link titled "Leave Plan Summary." Click on this link to view summary. Non-exempt staff information is shown in "Hours." Exempt staff information is shown in "Days." Supervisors may see how much leave is available for their direct reports by clicking on the "Supervisor Leave Balance Remaining" button.
TIAA-CREF consultant on campus March 13-15 to discuss new retirement investment options
A TIAA-CREF consultant will be on campus March 13–15. An additional retirement investment strategy will be available to employees as of April 1. Employees may choose to direct after-tax dollars to a Roth IRA. Educational meetings will be provided by the TIAA consultant from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, and 9:45–10:45 a.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Mott Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Lecture and Fine Arts committee introduces new application and funding schedule
The Lecture and Fine Arts committee is introducing a new application review schedule, permitting members of the Luther community to submit requests for funds more frequently throughout the academic year. The first phase for 2013-14 applications begins April 8 and closes April 15. Requests that were previously declined may be revised and resubmitted. 2012 flexible spending account dollars eligible through March 15
Flexible spending account dollars deducted from employee paychecks during 2012 may be used for eligible expenses through March 15, 2013. Claims for these dollars must be submitted to Midwest Group Benefits by March 31, 2013.

Wrestling 'Sea of Blue' fans invited to nationals
Norse wrestling fans are invited to a Saturday afternoon social gathering from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Marriott, Atrium Waterfall Terrace, during the Saturday afternoon break of the NCAA III National Wrestling Championships. The Cedar Rapids Marriott is located at 1200 Collins Road N. E.
The National Championships are being hosted by Cornell College and will take place at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena March 15-16.

Sports results
Luther wrestling took second place out of 11 teams during the NCAA III Central Regional tournament March 2 in Dubuque.
Luther men's tennis lost 2-7 to Earlham College and 2-7 to Case Western Reserve on March 2 in Holland, Mich. The team lost in a close 4-5 match against Kalamazoo College on March 3 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Women's track and field placed second and the men placed sixth in the IIAC Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24 in Dubuque.
The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced that Luther was presented all three of the major men's basketball awards for the 2012-13 season following a vote of the league’s coaches. Tyler Wedemeier '13 was named MVP, John Androus '14 was named defensive player of the year and head coach Mark Franzen was named the Iowa Conference coach of the year. Zach Matos-Pritchard '13 was named first team all-conference.
Luther was one of three schools that had three players named to the women's basketball all-conference team. Taylor Johnson '14, who led the Norse in scoring and rebounding was a first team honoree, while Meagan Koepnick '15 and Nellie Nelson '13 were second team selections.
The men and women's swimming and diving team earned 2012 Scholar All-America honors for the fall semester from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Team Scholar All-America Award includes a team’s complete roster and is presented to college and university teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
POSTPONED: Faculty Artist Series: Collaborative faculty voice recital postponed until April 5
The Luther College voice faculty's collaborative recital in honor of composers Benjamin Britten, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner has been postponed until 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will include opera scenes from "Falstaff," "Rigoletto," "La Traviata," "Il Trovatore," "Die Walküre" and "The Rape of Lucretia," as well as several arias and chamber works.
Luther sustainability announces 2013 Energy Competition Feb. 25- March 15
Encourage students to compete on behalf of their residence hall to reduce energy and water use and win the 2013 Energy Competition. Black-out events will be hosted by sustainability representatives in each hall. A $500 prize will be awarded to the residence hall that conserves the most electricity and water combined, and a $200 prize will be awarded to the second place residence hall. $10 gift cards to local Decorah businesses will be awarded to one eligible student from each residence hall each week of the competition. Center Stage Series to present 'First Person: Seeing America' March 5
The history of our country's extraordinary people will be brought to life through words, live music and iconic images in the Center Stage Series performance of "First Person: Seeing America." LIS will host a "Google+ in the Classroom" workshop from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in Hovde Lounge, Preus Library. Learn about the social network that is connected to your Norse Mail account. Google+ lends itself to a number of applications that are useful for teaching in higher education such as holding remote office hours, sharing information through circles and more. Learn about the possibilities for using this robust collaboration tool for working with students and colleagues.
LIS to host LinkedIn workshop March 6
LIS will host a LinkedIn workshop from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the Borlaug room, Dahl Centennial Union. LinkedIn is a social networking site for professionals, which is often used in job searches and professional development. Learn the basics of crafting an effective profile and utilizing various features of the site including forums, endorsements and relevant industry news. Workshop includes a review and demonstration of LinkedIn basics followed by open work time for crafting or enhancing your LinkedIn profile. Bring a laptop/tablet, basic resume information and access to a professional picture of yourself for uploading purposes.

Biology colloquia on Thursday March 7
Six Luther biology alumni will speak about the careers they have entered after graduation in a colloquium titled, "What Can You do with a Biology Degree?" at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, March 7, in Valders 206. Speakers include Araylla Jensen Hennigar '08, Cody Webb '09, Fran Fairfield '11, Sharon Heyer '08, Claire Schreiber '08 and Todd Scripture '07. JD Stier to present SAC Leadership lecture March 7
JD Stier will present the SAC Leadership lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in Room 206 of the Valders Hall of Science. Stier's lecture, titled "How Youth Affect Social Change," will focus on the impact the youth of today can have on the world. Water Street Music Series: Maritza and the Luther Tango ensemble to perform March 8
The Water Street Music Series will present local music group Maritza and the new Luther Tango ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Hotel Winneshiek’s Steyer Opera House. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $5. Maritza and the Luther Tango ensemble will share a lively evening of Balkan, Gypsy and Argentine tunes. The new ensemble is directed by Luther's ACM-Mellon postdoctoral fellow in ethnomusicology, Michael O'Brien. Liberty in North Korea documentary March 8
"Liberty in North Korea" will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Valders 206. Luther's Amnesty International is bringing representatives from LiNK for a viewing of the documentary and a discussion about their efforts to aid in refugees' escapes from North Korea and China. Luther College Visual and Performing Arts to present 'On the Verge, or—the Geography of Yearning'
"On the Verge, or—the Geography of Yearning" will be presented March 8-9 and 14-16 by Luther's Department for Visual and Performing Arts. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 8, 9, 14 and 16, 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 15 and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16. All performances will be held in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Tickets for the performance are $10 or free with a Luther I.D.
This will be the final production for theatre director Bob Larson, who will be retiring at the end of the semester after 48 years of service at Luther.
Faculty Artist Series: Guest recitalist Christine Kim to join Eric Kutz and Phuc Phan March 10
Christine Kim, assistant professor of cello at Middle Tennessee State University, will join Eric Kutz and Phuc Phan '13 in a cello recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program, titled "The Cello Suites of Benjamin Britten," will feature the three performers each playing one suite for solo cello by Britten.
2013 Oen Fellow to visit Luther March 10-13
Winnifred Sullivan, Luther's Oen Fellow for the 2013 spring semester, will visit campus March 10-13. Sullivan serves as professor of religious studies at Indiana University. During her visit, Sullivan will host the Oen Fellowship brown-bag discussion at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the Borlaug Room and the Oen Fellowship Lecture titled, "A Ministry of Presence: Chaplains Under the Law," at 6:30 p.m. in Olin Room 102. Sullivan's visit will conclude with a luncheon and discussion from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, 119 Winnebago Street. Collegiate Chorale to perform March 12
Luther College Collegiate Chorale, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the CFL. The performance by the 85-member Collegiate Chorale is open to the public with no charge for admission. Collegiate Chorale is composed of select junior and senior singers and is conducted by Andrew Last, assistant professor of music.
Gabriel Weisberg to present Gerhard Marcks Art History Lecture March 13
Gabriel Weisberg, professor of art history at the University of Minnesota and the country's foremost expert on the Barbizon School, will deliver Luther's 2012-13 Gerhard Marcks Art History Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, in Olin Room 102. The illustrated lecture, titled "The Etching Renaissance in France: 1850-1880," discusses why etching became the most sensitive medium for progressive artists in the latter half of the 19th century.
Jin Park to speak at Religion Forum lecture March 14
Reflecting upon the values of the modern world and its concept of justice, Jin Park, associate professor at American University, Washington D.C., will present the Luther Religion Forum Lecture, "Justice and Values in a Globalized World." Her lecture, held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the CRH, is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Center Stage Series: The Hot Club of San Francisco
Be swept away to a smoky 1930s Paris jazz club by the seductive sounds of Hot Club's gypsy swing as The Hot Club of San Francisco presents their sometimes flamboyant, sometimes melancholy gypsy jazz ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 15, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Empty Bowls project March 17
Luther College and the tri-state community will join together in March in an effort to fight hunger through the community's eighth annual Empty Bowls project. Professional potters and Luther students are making hundreds of handcrafted bowls for this year's event held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in the Center for the Arts.
Symphony Orchestra early spring concert March 17
The Luther College Symphony Orchestra will present an early spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The program begins with a performance of the first movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, Op. 47. Senior music major Karla Dietmeyer—Symphony Orchestra concertmaster and one of two winners of the Department of Music 2012 Concerto Contest—will be the soloist.
After a brief intermission, the program will conclude with a performance of "Tod und Verklärung" ("Death and Transfiguration") by German composer Richard Strauss. Completed in November 1889, "Tod und Verklärung" is a symphonic poem for large orchestra. It is a splendid example of what is commonly known as program music, in which some extra-musical impulse, such as a story, painting or idea, plays an important role.

Xiao Hu and Du Huang performed a piano duo recital at the University of Iowa. The program included a new work, "Three Pieces for Two Pianos," written specifically for the duo by University of Iowa composition Professor Michael Eckert.

The video, "Distractions from Homework," which is displayed in the College Operations section of this week's Tuesday was a collaboration between Hannah Schleusner '13, Breanna Friedrich '11 and Charlotte Page '13, who participated in the nursing department's public health class during the 2012 fall semester. The video also included contributions from Aaron Budihas '14 , Victoria Peters '15, Siri Hedstrom '14, Mullen Wacker '15 and Kelsey Reger '13 who are student videographers in the counseling service and health service departments. The video was financially supported by the American College Health Foundation Gallagher Koster grant.

Technical media coordinator: Three-quarter time position of technical media coordinator. Coordinator is responsible for providing the technical media support for the music department and campus programming. Coordinator will also provide technical leadership in marketing Luther College programming to a larger audience. Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, at least five years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Administrative assistant in nursing: Two or four year degree preferred along with appropriate work experience. Responsible for the ongoing support staff activities for the department of nursing Decorah office. Resident director: Resident director for Brandt Hall. A professional, 10-month, live-in position. Duties include supervision of resident assistants; liaison with administration, faculty and staff; development of programming in the halls; duty rotation and participation in the disciplinary process. Director actively participates in staff recruitment, selection and training activities, management of residence hall facility and occupancy issues and campus emergency response duty. Evening and weekend work is required. Master’s degree is preferred, bachelor’s degree required. Fundraiser: Preceptor Zeta sorority is having a “clean out your pockets” cash fundraiser for Darrin Walter, owner of Decorah Cleaners, to assist with medical expenses. In December 2012 Darrin had a simultaneous kidney and pancreas organ transplant at Rochester Methodist Hospital.
