President Rick and Mrs. Judy Torgerson invite all Luther staff to their home for an indoor/outdoor reception from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 17. Rain date is 4:30-6:30 p.m., Friday, April 19. Located at 711 Ridge Road, their home is the first house on the left as you head up Ridge Road. Because street parking is limited, staff who are able are encouraged to walk to the reception. Last chance for 2012 flexible benefits reimbursement
There are still a number of employees with balances in their 2012 flexible benefits reimbursement accounts for health and dependent care. Requests for reimbursement of funds must be submitted by March 31. Any 2012 funds not requested by March 31 will be forfeited, according to IRS code.
Passport photo days
The office of Visual Media would like to remind everyone there are three passport photo days left this school year: April 3, May 1 and May 7. Stop in any time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on those days. Paideia Endowment board seeking proposals for 2013-14 Text and Issues Lecture series
The Paideia Endowment Governing Board invites members of the Luther community to propose presentations for the 2013-14 Text and Issues Lecture series. The theme will be: "Studying the 'Other'." What special opportunities, challenges, limitations or even moral obligations are presented by studying the "other?" Those interested should submit a tentative title and a brief, 250-500 word, proposal by Monday, April 15. The proposal form and instructions are available at: https://www.luther.edu/
Red Watch Band program seeking nominations for student facilitators
The Red Watch Band program is being developed by Luther students and needs your help. The mission of the program is to provide students of the college community with the knowledge, awareness and skills to prevent toxic drinking deaths, and to promote a student culture of kindness, responsibility, compassion and respect. Facilities Services warns of icy sidewalks and streets
Facilities Services reminds everyone to be cautious when walking on campus sidewalks and streets. Some of the areas have ice on them due to the melting snow refreezing overnight. The grounds crew is working early in the morning to check the known problem areas. The best possible equipment will be used for the conditions. Typically the brushes work best for cleaning bare concrete. Contact Facilities Services, 387-1146, to report a patch of ice that needs attention.
Planned network maintenance March 29
On Friday, March 29, LIS will upgrade our Network Access Control System. This work will begin at 7 a.m. and is expected to be completed before noon. During this time, users may be unable to connect to the LCWireless and LCWireless5G networks. The LCGuest wireless network and the Wired network will remain available during the upgrade.
The Norse Athletic Association is now taking reservations for spring sports luncheon
The spring Norse Athletic Association luncheon will be held at noon Tuesday, April 2, in Peace Dining Room. The cost for lunch is $5. The event will feature all spring sports coaches speaking on their respective seasons to date. Please RSVP to Mark Franzen, 387-1588 or <franma03>.
Community Supported Agriculture reimbursement program
Recognizing the importance of vegetable consumption as part of a healthy diet, Wellness, Sustainability and the Health Care Council are collaborating to offer up to 100 faculty and staff a 50 percent reimbursement, up to $100, on vegetable Community Supported Agriculture shares. All .75 FTE employees are eligible to participate. Visit the sustainability website to learn more about the requirements, connect with a farm and register for the program. Deadline for subscribing is May 1, but we encourage you to sign up early. We anticipate these spots filling up quickly.

The Book Shop is now accepting entries for the sixth annual Peep diorama contest. Entries can be made by departments or by individuals. Get creative and compete for great prizes. Entries are due in the Book Shop by Thursday, April 4, with winners announced at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 5.

Parking available in Larson lot during spring break for faculty and staff
Faculty and Staff may utilize the student spaces near Larson for parking Tuesday-Friday, March 26-29. Norby House is open for students over break so the spaces designated for that hall are still reserved for Norby residents.
Seeking Staff Excellence Award nominees
Staff and faculty are invited to nominate an administrative or support staff person for the Staff Excellence Awards. Nominations are due April 12 in the Human Resources office. Luther softball defeated Bethel University, 10-7, 9-8, on March 19 in Rochester, Minn.
Clare Slagel '16 competed in the Women's Swimming and Diving NCAA III National Championships March 20-23 in Shenandoah, Texas. Slagel placed 22nd from the field of 36 competitors in the 500 freestyle, posting a time of 5:01.65, breaking her own school record by three seconds. Slagel earned all-American honors twice with a fourth place finish in the A Finals of the 100 backstroke and a third place finish in the 200 backstroke. Slagel becomes the third Luther female swimmer to earn individual all-America honors and the first since 2008.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches has announced that Tyler Wedemeier has been selected to play in the 2013 Reese’s® Division III College All-Star game, which will be played as part of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship. The all-star game was played March 23, prior to the NCAA Division III semifinals at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. Wedemeier becomes the first player from the Iowa Conference to be selected to play in the Reese’s® Division III College All-Star game.
'The Life and Music of Theodora Cormontan' performance April 2
As part of the continuing effort to pay homage to its strong Norwegian roots, Luther will host a performance in honor of the highly accomplished Norwegian composer Theodora Cormontan. "The Life and Music of Theodora Cormontan" will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the NRH. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Performed by Bonnie and Michael Jorgensen of Gustavus Adolphus College, "The Life and Music of Theodora Cormontan" combines storytelling and musical elements to showcase the life of the Norwegian composer.
Peep-tacular Day in the Book Shop April 5
Enjoy everything Peeps on Friday, April 5 when the Book Shop celebrates the sixth annual Peep-tacular Day. Vote for your favorite Peeps diorama, toss a peep bean bag to win a store wide discount and enjoy Peeps, rice krispie treats and punch. Winners of the diorama contest will be announced at 3:30 p.m.
Gabriele Villarini to lecture on Midwest flooding April 4
Gabriele Villarini from the University of Iowa IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering Program, will give a lecture titled "Is it Going to Rain Tomorrow? Heavy Rainfall and Flooding over the Central United States," at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Valders 262. Villarini will discuss his research, focused on flood forecasting for the Midwest given climate and land use change scenarios. All are welcome.
Laurie Zaring to present the Paideia Text and Issues Lecture April 9
Laurie Zaring will present the Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture "Beauty is in the Ear of the Listener" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the CFL. In her lecture, Zaring will speak about the situations in which we profile others for their language, the situations in which we may find ourselves profiled by others and how we can overcome these judgments and learn to listen intelligently. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge. Both the lecture and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Public screening of new documentary April 10
Arcos Films presents the acclaimed new documentary, "Switch: Discover the Future of Energy," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in Valders 206. The documentary is designed to give straight answers to today's most important energy questions: Is fracking polluting our water? How dangerous is nuclear? Will we run out of oil? Can we clean up coal? Will renewables power our future? The film is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Spring Fling community service day April 13
Volunteers from Luther's student congregation will help Decorah residents with spring chores Saturday, April 13 during the annual Spring Fling community service day. Decorah residents can sign up by contacting Luther College Ministries, 387-1271 or <ministry>. Deadline for registration is Monday, April 8. Residents requesting Spring Fling assistance should provide a brief explanation of the spring chores they would like accomplished during the allotted 90 minutes.
LIS partners with Dean's office to offer summer 2013 faculty workshop
LIS and the Dean's office are partnering to offer a workshop, "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology," for faculty June 3-6. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Andrew Ellingsen attended the national conference of the Organization of American Kodály Educators in Hartford, Conn., completing his two-year term on the national board. Ellingsen presented a conference session titled "Orff Schulwerk in the Kodály Classroom" and led the community dance for more than 300 honor choir students, parents and music educators.
Ruth Kath, Sean Burke, Rebecca Sullivan and Corey Landstrom represented Luther at the second national conference of the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education. An extension of the previous Lilly-funded Programs for the Theological Exploration of Vocation, NetVUE is administered by the Council of Independent Colleges with generous support of Lilly Endowment, Inc. Luther is a founding member of NetVUE. At the conference, Sullivan did a presentation on the Paideia 450 course she has developed under Luther's "Sense of Vocation" program, "Here on Earth: Preparing for Vocation in a Sustainable Global Community."
Rachel Faldet's essay, "Leaf Senescence," appears in the Spring 2013 issue of Ruminate Magazine. In January, Faldet gave a presentation on creative nonfiction for Liz Fox's Decorah High School composition class.
Paige Armstrong '12 and Tyler Hagy '13 competed at the American Choral Director's Association national convention on March 14 in Dallas, Texas, as part of the Undergraduate Conducting Competition. Armstrong and Hagy were both named semi-finalists along with seven other undergraduate students around the country. Armstrong went on to the finals and won this year's competition.
Cate Anderson '14 and Maggie Steinberg '15 have been selected as Peace Scholars for the 2013-14 academic year. The pair will spend seven weeks this summer studying peace and conflict resolution in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.

Jennaya Robison named new director of Cathedral and Aurora choirs
Luther announces the appointment of Jennaya Robison as the college's director of Cathedral and Aurora choirs and assistant professor of music. Robison will begin at Luther in the fall. Robison currently serves as director of music ministry at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, Ariz. She has held faculty and teaching positions at Luther, the University of Arizona and the University of New Mexico.
