Honoring the Torgersons
Mark your calendars for two dates in May when the campus will pay tribute to President Rick and Mrs. Judy Torgerson. The Torgerson's will be honored Friday, May 3, as part of the annual Student Research Symposium. All are invited to "A Torgerson Tribute: 14 Years of Mojo from the Get-go!" at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 16.
Staff reception hosted by the Torgersons
President Rick and Mrs. Judy Torgerson invite all Luther staff to their home for an indoor/outdoor reception Wednesday, April 17, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. (Rain date Friday, April 19, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.). The President's house, located at 711 Ridge Road, is the first house on the left as you head up Ridge Road. Because street parking is limited, staff who are able are encouraged to walk to the reception. Parking is available in the swimming pool lot.

April 2 Macklemore and Ryan Lewis concert postponed
The sold-out concert for the hip-hop group Macklemore and
Ryan Lewis scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, has been postponed due to illness. The Luther College Student Activities Council Concerts Committee, which is sponsoring the show, will announce a new Macklemore concert date in the fall of 2013 as soon as possible. Those who purchased tickets through the Luther College Box Office will automatically receive a refund. Ticket purchasers who have not received a refund within two weeks should contact the Box Office at 387-1357.
Business card deadline April 10
The publications office is accepting orders for business cards online at www.luther.edu/printwork. Order in quantity increments of 250. Send a sample of an old card via campus mail to AJ Perling. Submit orders prior to Wednesday, April 10. This order will be ready just before graduation to accommodate summer travelers. The publications office gathers business card orders at the start of each semester; note that orders printed individually at other times cost considerably more. Fulbright program workshop April 10
A Fulbright program workshop will be held from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in the Mott Room of the Union. This workshop is for students and faculty advisors. The Fulbright program offers fellowships abroad to over 150 countries for one academic year. Send RSVP to <brandtja>.

Seeking Student Award Nominations

Seeking nominations for Community Leadership Seminar
The Luther College Center for Sustainable Communities in partnership with the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative is accepting nominations for an upcoming Community Leadership Seminar. Participants will attend three sessions in May and June at Luther. Upcoming opportunities for prescribed prairie burns and garlic mustard control
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to get out and enjoy Luther’s natural areas by participating in spring volunteer events including prescribed fires and garlic mustard control. Paideia Endowment board seeking proposals for 2013-14 Text and Issues Lecture series
The Paideia Endowment Governing Board invites members of the Luther community to propose presentations for the 2013-14 Text and Issues Lecture series. The theme will be: "Studying the 'Other'." What special opportunities, challenges, limitations or even moral obligations are presented by studying the "other?" Red Watch Band program seeking nominations for student facilitators
The Red Watch Band program is being developed by Luther students and needs your help. The mission of the program is to provide students of the college community with the knowledge, awareness and skills to prevent toxic drinking deaths, and to promote a student culture of kindness, responsibility, compassion and respect. Community Supported Agriculture reimbursement program
Recognizing the importance of vegetable consumption as part of a healthy diet, Wellness, Sustainability and the Health Care Council are collaborating to offer up to 100 faculty and staff a 50 percent reimbursement, up to $100, on vegetable Community Supported Agriculture shares. All .75 FTE employees are eligible to participate. Visit the sustainability website to learn more about the requirements, connect with a farm and register for the program. Deadline for subscribing is May 1, but we encourage you to sign up early. We anticipate these spots filling up quickly.

'The Life and Music of Theodora Cormontan' performance April 2
As part of the continuing effort to pay homage to its strong Norwegian roots, Luther will host a performance in honor of the highly accomplished Norwegian composer Theodora Cormontan. "The Life and Music of Theodora Cormontan" will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the NRH. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Performed by Bonnie and Michael Jorgensen of Gustavus Adolphus College, "The Life and Music of Theodora Cormontan" combines storytelling and musical elements to showcase the life of the Norwegian composer.
Documentary film screening April 4
Francesca Soan, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Northern Iowa, will host a film screening of the documentary, "Sons of Jacob Synagogue: Place, Memory, and Identity," at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Olin 102. The documentary explores the histories and experiences of the Jewish community in Waterloo, from the early immigrants fleeing persecution to today. Weaving together archival footage, interviews, photographs, and texts, the documentary creates a complex picture of the identity of a community and its connection to place.
Decorah artist's work on display April 4-May 18 at Preus Library
The unique rosemaling and portrait painting work of local artist Norma Wangsness will be on display April 4-May 18 in Preus Library. A reception will be held for the artist in Hovde Lounge at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29. The reception is open to the public with no charge for admission. Wangsness studied drawing and painting at Luther under legendary printmaker Orville Running. She also studied landscape and fine art portraiture with Maxine Pendry, portrait painting with Daniel Greene, airbrush painting with Sam Bogosian, and rosemaling with Sigmund Aarseth.
PEEPtacular Day in the Book Shop April 5
Join the Luther Book Shop for PEEPtacular Day, 8:45 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Friday, April 5. The day will feature Peep treats, marshmallow bars and Peep punch, displays of all Peep dioramas submitted for the contest, voting for the top dioramas from 8:45 a.m.-3 p.m., and Book Shop specials throughout the day.
Faculty Artist Series: 'A Celebration of Britten, Verdi and Wagner in Opera and Song'
The Luther College voice faculty will present a collaborative recital in honor of composers Benjamin Britten, Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner and at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.
The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The program, titled "A Celebration of Britten, Verdi and Wagner in Opera and Song," will include opera scenes from "Falstaff," "Rigoletto," "La Traviata," "Il Trovatore," "Die Walküre" and "The Rape of Lucretia," as well as several arias and chamber works.
SAC Spotlight presents 'A Spotlight on Student Groups' April 5
Luther's Student Activities Committee presents "A Spotlight on Student Groups" at 8 p.m. Friday, April 5, in Marty's CyberCafé. Tickets are $5 and available at the Luther Box Office or at the door the night of the show. The show will showcase 2Tall4U, an acoustic music group; Strangz, a student-led string ensemble and Eklipse, a hip-hop dance team.
Phi Alpha Theta to show film April 7
Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society, will show the Mel Brooks movie, "History of the World Part I," at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in Koren 217. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Anna Peterson, who will be joining the history department in the fall to teach modern European history. All are welcome.
'Luther College Archives: Research 101' workshop April 8
Learn how to do basic research within the Luther Archives from 2-3 p.m. Monday, April 8, in the Hovde Lounge of the Preus library. College archivist Rachel Vagts and digital archivist Sasha Griffin will demonstrate digitized collections and the online catalog Nordic. Laurie Zaring to present the Paideia Text and Issues Lecture April 9
Laurie Zaring will present the Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture "Beauty is in the Ear of the Listener" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the CFL. In her lecture, Zaring will speak about the situations in which we profile others for their language, the situations in which we may find ourselves profiled by others and how we can overcome these judgments and learn to listen intelligently. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge. Both the lecture and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Public screening of new documentary April 10
Arcos Films presents the acclaimed new documentary, "Switch: Discover the Future of Energy," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in Valders 206. The documentary is designed to give straight answers to today's most important energy questions: Is fracking polluting our water? How dangerous is nuclear? Will we run out of oil? Can we clean up coal? Will renewables power our future? The film is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Passover celebration April 11
College Ministries and the Diversity Center are hosting a Passover celebration at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Peace Dining Room. The evening will feature a "model" Passover Seder, learning about the Jewish tradition that celebrates freedom from slavery and oppression. Space is limited. Collegium Musicum to perform 'Renaissance Folk' concert April 11
Luther's Collegium Musicum will perform "Renaissance Folk," the ensemble's spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the NRH. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Collegium Musicum is an ensemble of instrumentalists and vocalists specializing in the music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Directed by Kathryn Reed, the ensemble will perform works of Henry Purcell, Robert Jones, Thomas Ravenscroft, Martin Peerson and the famous "anonymous."
Garlic Mustard weeding April 13
Join us from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 13 at Palisades Park to weed the invasive garlic mustard plant. Go past the park entrance along the gravel road by the river half a mile to the end. Arrive before 10 as we will be moving around the area. Bring gloves, hand diggers and hoes. We will also have some supplies on hand. Garlic mustard kills woodland plants, including young trees. Spring Fling community service day April 13
Volunteers from Luther's student congregation will help Decorah residents with spring chores Saturday, April 13 during the annual Spring Fling community service day. Residents requesting Spring Fling assistance should provide a brief explanation of the spring chores they would like accomplished during the allotted 90 minutes.
LIS partners with Dean's office to offer summer 2013 faculty workshop
LIS and the Dean's office are partnering to offer a workshop, "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology," for faculty June 3-6. A poster abstract authored by Jacob Wittman '12 and Andrew Weckwerth '12, with advisor Jodi Enos-Berlage, recently received an award of Honorable Mention from the Council on Undergraduate Research. The poster abstract, "Determining the Sources of Bacterial Pollution in a Midwestern Watershed," ranked in the top 10 percent of over 800 submissions to the Posters on the Hill competition. The abstract was selected as an alternate for presentation at the 2013 Posters on the Hill Event, in which undergraduates from across the country present their work to legislators in Washington, D.C.
Michael Berndt '14, Aimee Lenth '14, Kendra Moser '14, Katelynn Richman '15 and Rebecca Rundquist '14 each recieved a $1000 Steven Mark Anderson Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year. Recipients of the scholarship were announced during the 12th annual Luther College Student Support Services Celebration Banquet held March 20. The Steven Mark Anderson Scholarship benefits Luther students involved in Student Support Services. The scholarship program was established in 2001 by Lloyd and Kathy Anderson of Ames, Iowa, in memory of their son, Pastor Steven Mark Anderson, who graduated from Luther in 1985.
Callie Mabry '14 was named a Udall Scholar on Wednesday, March 27. She was selected from a pool of 488 candidates nominated by 230 colleges and universities to receive the scholarship. A 14-member independent review committee selected this year's group of Udall Scholars on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, Native American health care or tribal public policy; leadership potential; academic achievement; and record of public service. Each Udall scholarship provides up to $5,000 for the scholar's junior or senior year.

Jennaya Robison named new director of Cathedral and Aurora choirs
Luther announces the appointment of Jennaya Robison as the college's director of Cathedral and Aurora choirs and assistant professor of music. Robison will begin at Luther in the fall. Robison currently serves as director of music ministry at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, Ariz. She has held faculty and teaching positions at Luther, the University of Arizona and the University of New Mexico.

Sustainability tip
There are two locations on campus for recycling toner and ink jet containers. One is the Document Center, the other is at the Preus Library. All materials are shipped to a partner of the Ricoh Company. The are recycled or disposed of properly.

World Health Day is celebrated April 7 and marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world. The theme for 2013 is high blood pressure.
