'14 Years of Mojo from the Get-go!': Torgerson tribute May 16
Luther College will hold a special program in honor of President Rick and Mrs. Judy Torgerson Thursday, May 16. The main program will be held at 8 p.m. in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life, followed by a reception at 9 p.m. in Bentdahl Commons. Senior Recognition Convocation May 7
The annual Senior Recognition Convocation will be held at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the CFL Main Hall. The celebration will honor all members of the Class of 2013 and recognize those who have earned Latin honors, those elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to honor societies in their major fields, those who received post-graduate and departmental awards, and academic all-conference athletes. Judy Torgerson will give the address, "Reflections and Gratitude." Following convocation, a class of 2013 group photo will be taken.
Senior Sendoff registration deadline May 13
Faculty and staff are encouraged to join the seniors for the 2013 Senior Sendoff. Sponsored by Student Senate and the Alumni office, Senior Sendoff has become an annual celebration, bringing together soon-to-be graduates with faculty/staff for an evening of conversation and dancing. All library books due May 10
All books checked out by faculty/staff from the main stacks of the library on or before May 5 need to be returned or renewed no later than May 10. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed by emailing <library>. The new due date will be Dec. 14, the last day of classes for the fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in to the circulation desk to have them checked in and out again. Paideia summer reading book now available
The summer reading for the Fall 2013 incoming class is "The Space Between Us" by Thrity Umrigar. The Dean's office and the Paideia Endowment have made a limited number of copies available free of charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who are not already receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. To allow as many as possible to read the book we encourage people to share a copy with their friends and colleagues.
Update on CFL construction work
Work has been progressing on the CFL flashing repairs. Work will continue until May 15, at which time the materials on the ground will be picked up and placed out of sight for the upcoming events around Commencement. Work will resume Monday, May 20 and will continue until the end of the month. Thank you for your continued patience during these repairs.

Facilities Services to conduct boiler inspections
Facilities Services will shut down and inspect the boilers Tuesday, May 21 at 7 a.m. The steam should be back on by 5 p.m. Saturday, May 25. Hot water will not be available in the Union, Farwell, Larsen, Brandt, Regents Center, Ylvisaker, Olin and Valders, and limited in Miller/Dieseth and Sampson Hoffland. Some buildings will be cooler when the boiler is shutdown. Contact Facilities, 387-1146, to report problems.
Sophos support ending May 2013
At the end of May, LIS will no longer support Sophos Anti-Virus for personally owned computers. Faculty, staff and students will need to remove Sophos and acquire their own anti-virus to protect their computers. Help Desk staff will be available to assist with the process. Paigaam seeking donations of books and suitcases

Be a waste diverter
Volunteer to be a waste diverter during finals week. Faculty and Staff volunteers are welcome and appreciated. Help reduce the quantity of materials that end up in the landfill, as well as help students learn what is waste vs. what is recyclable/reusable. In teams of two or four, volunteers will be placed at residential halls near the trash/recycling area and inside the building. As we come to the end of another academic year, we would like to thank all who participated in worship. The many contributions of preachers, musicians and artists greatly enrich our life together.
Our regular worship schedule will resume in the fall with Sunday morning worship on Sept. 1 and weekday chapel on Sept. 4. Opening Convocation is Sept. 5. We wish all students, faculty and staff a safe and relaxing summer.
Sports results
Shari Huber '13, and Becca Girvan '14, have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII First-Team for softball. This is the second time Huber has been honored and the first for Girvan. Luther softball won the 2013 IIAC tournament championship, defeating Coe College, 5-2, May 5, in Cedar Rapids.
Andrew Peter '14, was named the Iowa conference Golfer of the Year, after capturing the individual title of the 2013 Iowa Conference Championship. Tobias Kohl '14, earned all-conference honors for the third time.
Luther baseball was defeated in a doubleheader against Wartburg College, 1-3 and 4-5, April 30 at home. The Norse ended their season with a doubleheader split against Central College, 1-14 and 3-1, May 5, at home.
Men's golf took second place honors at the Iowa Conference Championships, May 4 in Cedar Rapids.
Men's tennis lost, 0-5, against Coe College in the IIAC automatic qualifier-championship May 5, in Cedar Rapids.
Retirement reception for Marv Slind May 7
Join the history department in celebrating the retirement of Marv Slind with a reception from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the third floor atrium of Koren. All are invited for ice cream treats.
'Turn the Tragedy of Postville into a Victory for Justice'
Join the broader northeast Iowa community in marking the five year anniversary of the 2008 immigration raid in Postville with a call to remember, reconcile and reform.

Farewell reception for Roger and Amme Anderson May 10
The Luther community is invited to a farewell Open House for Roger and Amme Anderson, 3-5 p.m. Friday, May 10, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah. The church is located at 701 Iowa Avenue. Roger spent well over 50 years with Luther as a student, head of the education department and in the office of the Registrar. The Andersons are relocating to Wisconsin to be closer to their sons.
Trash to Treasure sale May 17, 20
The Luther men's JV basketball team will be hosting the Trash to Treasure sale from 7-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 17, and from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Ashmore-Jewell barn. Stop by the barn to check out all the great, unique items. All proceeds go towards the Luther basketball program.
Baccalaureate service May 18
Baccalaureate service is 8 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the CFL. All graduating seniors, their friends and families and the community are invited to participate. Guests are asked to be seated by 7:45 p.m. Rooted in the college’s Christian heritage, this ecumenical service seeks to celebrate the diversity of the graduating class by incorporating readings and prayers from a variety of religious traditions. Each year a freewill offering is collected and designated to local and global charities in honor of the senior class. This year's offering will benefit the ELCA Malaria Campaign, Decorah Community Free Clinic and the Decorah Area Food Pantry.
2013 Commencement ceremony May 19
Luther will celebrate Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, in Carlson Stadium. Five hundred seventy members of the Luther class of 2013 will receive the Bachelor of Arts degree. Tickets are required for those attending the ceremony.
Chingwel Mutombu, executive director and founder of First Step Initiative, has been named the recipient of the Luther College Young Alumni Award for 2013. The Young Alumni Award recognizes Luther alumni who have graduated in the past 15 years and rendered notable service to their profession and society in their vocation or avocation. Marv Slind attended the 103rd annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, held in San Francisco, May 2-4. He presented the paper, "Child Naming Patterns as an Indication of Assimilation: A Case Study in Eastern Washington's Selbu Community."
FJH Music has just published "La sortija," a piece for student-level string orchestra, by Michael O'Brien. Victoria Christman and Ben Nordquist '14, attended the Institute of Peace Workshop at Illinois Wesleyan University April 12-13. Nordquist presented his paper, "Women's Education in Post-Conflict Iraq."
Victoria Christman's article, "Coram Imperatore: The Publication of Francisco de Enzinas’s Spanish New Testament (1543)," was published in Wim François and August den Hollander, eds., "Wading Lambs and Swimming Elephants: The Bible for the Laity and Theologians in Late Medieval and Early Modern Era," Bibliotheca Ephemeridum Theologicarum Lovaniensium 257 (Leuven: Peeters, 2012).
Richard Bernatz had his article, "Flood Frequency Estimation by Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Rainfall Model and TopModel," published in the Journal of the Iowa Academy of Sciences in Volume 118, Issue 104. The article is focused on portions of an on-going Luther project that collects and analyzes rainfall and runoff data for the Upper Iowa River.
Andy Hageman presented "Ezekiel, William Blake, Klaatu: 'Wheels within Wheels' as an Eco-SF Trope" at the EATON/Science Fiction Research Association Conference at University of California-Riverside in April.
Norma J. Hervey, emerita professor of history, will speak at the 34th American Indian Workshop at the University of Helsinki, May 16.
The Daryl and Audrey Erdman Prizes for Entrepreneurship were awarded to Justin Ratzlaff '13, Dan Fernelius '13, Lindsay Sheridan '13 and Chris Norton '14. In order to be selected for an Erdman Prize, the Luther students who create, develop and manage a successful entrepreneurial enterprise during their years at Luther must apply and present their venture to a panel of judges. The judging panel is comprised of entrepreneurs in the Decorah community.
The $2,000 Accenture Scholarship was awarded to Minh Nguyen '14. The Accenture Scholarship recognizes a Luther student who has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership while majoring in computer science, management, economics or mathematics.
The Luther College Entrepreneurship Club Leadership Prize was awarded to Katie Berner '14. The E-Club Entrepreneurial Leadership Prize is given to a current E-Club member in recognition of leadership contributions while at Luther and particularly during the past year. Club members nominate and participate in the selection of the winner along with the E-Club faculty adviser.
Storm Bailey presented a paper, "Truth, Civility and the Liberal Arts," at the annual conference of the Association of Core Texts and Courses in Ottawa, Canada, April 27.

Volunteers haul items to the Ashmore-Jewell barn where they sort everything to be sold. The Trash to Treasure flea market-style sale is open for three days prior to graduation and two days after.
