Move Out Day parking restrictions

To help facilitate closing of the residence halls we will be restricting vehicle access on High Street, from Koren to Center Street, staring at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16. The faculty/staff parking along this section will be closed during that time to allow better access for those moving out of Brandt.

We ask faculty/staff not to park in the small lot south of Ylvisaker and east of the CFL on Thursday, May 16, so those moving out of Ylvisaker may utilize this space.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Fiscal year end approaching

The end of the fiscal year is fast approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 12-13 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices (no faxed copies), and supporting purchase orders/purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the office for Financial Services by June 12 to be included in FY 12-13 budget. Items for deposit must be sent to the office for Financial Services by June 6. Thanks for helping us close out the year in a timely manner.

Graduation DVDs

The Book Shop is selling copies of the 2013 Commencement ceremony for $20, which includes shipping. Pre-order copies by May 23 in the Book Shop or online at www.lutherbookshop.com. Orders will ship by June 7.

Book Shop closed for inventory

The Book Shop will be closed for inventory Tuesday-Friday, May 21-24. We will make every attempt to be open on Friday, May 24. Regular summer hours will be from 8:15 a.m.-4:45 p.m. starting Tuesday, May 28. We apologize for any inconvenience.

All library books due May 10

All books checked out by faculty/staff from the main stacks of the library on or before May 5 need to be returned or renewed no later than May 10. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed by emailing <library>. The new due date will be Dec. 14, the last day of classes for the fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times will not be renewed again; rather patrons will need to bring these books in to the circulation desk to have them checked in and out again. Direct deposit available for Flexible Benefit Plan

Current enrollees in the Flexible Benefit Plan may visit https://www.myflexonline.com/Benefits to view current pending claims, submit a claim, view claim activity and enroll in the direct deposit feature. Employees are encouraged to use the direct deposit feature. Direct deposit eliminates the chance of a misplaced check, and monies may be deposited in either checking or savings accounts.

Paideia summer reading book now available

The summer reading for the Fall 2013 incoming class is "The Space Between Us" by Thrity Umrigar. The Dean's office and the Paideia Endowment have made a limited number of copies available free of charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who are not already receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. To allow as many as possible to read the book we encourage people to share a copy with their friends and colleagues.

Work has been progressing on the CFL flashing repairs. Work will continue until May 15, at which time the materials on the ground will be picked up and placed out of sight for the upcoming events around Commencement. Work will resume Monday, May 20 and will continue until the end of the month. Thank you for your continued patience during these repairs.

Chapel this week

As we come to the end of another academic year, we would like to thank all who participated in worship. The many contributions of preachers, musicians and artists greatly enrich our life together.

Our regular worship schedule will resume in the fall with Sunday morning worship on Sept. 1 and weekday chapel on Sept. 4. Opening Convocation is Sept. 5. We wish all students, faculty and staff a safe and relaxing summer. 

Sports results

Becca Girvan '14, was named the Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week. Girvan, a 2012 All-American, led Luther softball to its third IIAC tournament title in the last four years with three complete game victories over the weekend.

Luther softball advanced to the second round of the winners bracket in the NCAA III Whitewater Regional with a 6-4 win over Carthage College, May 9 in Whitewater, Wis. The Norse advanced to the third round of the championship bracket with a 5-4 victory over UW-Whitewater, May 10. The team went on to defeat North Central Illinois 4-2, May 11. This win advanced the team to the NCAA III Regional Championship finals to be held May 15-20 in Eau Claire, Wis.

Andrew Peter '14, was also named the Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week. Peter placed final two round scores of 72 and 68 to capture medalist and IIAC Golfer of the Year honors at the 2013 Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championships.

Senior Sendoff May 16
Faculty and staff are encouraged to join the seniors for the 2013 Senior Sendoff. Sponsored by Student Senate and the Alumni office, Senior Sendoff has become an annual celebration, bringing together soon-to-be graduates with faculty/staff for an evening of conversation and dancing. Senior Sendoff will be held at the Hotel Winneshiek from 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16. Registration for the event was due May 13.

Luther Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra to perform May 17

The Luther College Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, in the CFL. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Concert Band will perform "La Fiesta Mexicana" by H. Owen Reed, "Who Puts His Trust in God Most Just" by Bach, and "Stars and Stripes" by John Philip Sousa among others. Jazz Orchestra will perform "Mack the Knife," from "Threepenny Opera" by Kurt Weill, "All of Me" by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simon and "That's How We Roll" by Gordon Goodwin among others.

Trash to Treasure sale May 17, 20

The Luther men's JV basketball team will host the Trash to Treasures sale from 7-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 17, and from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, May 20, at the Ashmore-Jewell barn. Stop by the barn to check out all the great, unique items. All proceeds go towards the Luther basketball program.

All-Senior Art Exhibit May 7-19

The unique and varied works of graduating Luther art majors will be on display May 7-19 in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the CFA. The annual exhibit is held to give the students graduating with an art major the opportunity to present a sample of their entire senior project one final time while in college. The exhibit features a variety of works including painting, sculpture, photography, collage, video and mixed-media installation pieces.

A reception will be held for the artists featured in the All-Senior Art Exhibit at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18, just outside of the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the CFA. The reception is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Baccalaureate service May 18

Baccalaureate service is 8 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the CFL. All graduating seniors, their friends and families and the community are invited to participate. Guests are asked to be seated by 7:45 p.m. Rooted in the college’s Christian heritage, this ecumenical service seeks to celebrate the diversity of the graduating class by incorporating readings and prayers from a variety of religious traditions. Each year a freewill offering is collected and designated to local and global charities in honor of the senior class. This year's offering will benefit the ELCA Malaria Campaign, Decorah Community Free Clinic and the Decorah Area Food Pantry.

2013 Commencement ceremony May 19

Luther will celebrate Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, in Carlson Stadium. Five hundred seventy members of the Luther class of 2013 will receive the Bachelor of Arts degree. Tickets are required for those attending the ceremony.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Karen Kanakis and Jacob Lassetter were the featured soloists in two separate performances of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." The first performance was with the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra and Community Chorus in Ottumwa on April 27, and the second was with the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra, Grinnell Oratorio Society and Grinnell Singers on May 5 at Grinnell College.

Andy Hageman's essay, "Dismembering the Cautionary Cliché: Re-Reading the Techno-Science Ethics in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein," was recently published in the 2013 issue of the journal Excursions. The Launching Luther Leaders program announced the recipients of Luther's third annual Student Leadership Awards to individuals and groups for their contribution to the college's mission of service. Award recipients include Luther Diversity Center's Ethnic Arts Festival for Outstanding Event or Activity; Habitat for Humanity's San Antonio Build for Outstanding Service Project; Laura Harney was named Outstanding Student Leader; and Enlaces for Outstanding Organization.

Judy Craft, who has worked at Luther for 23 years, has announced her retirement effective June 3.

Kathy Tollefsrud, who has worked at Luther for 27 years, has announced her retirement effective May 31.

Campus News and Visual Media administrative assistant: The News and Visual Media department seeks a 10-month, part-time (.50FTE) office assistant. Responsibilities include supporting both Campus News and Visual Media through writing press releases, distributing mass communication, managing schedules, supporting the creation of visual content and front desk management including interacting with clients and key constituents. The Winneshiek Energy District's Bike 2 Work Week is May 13-17. The Energy District is encouraging everyone to bike or walk to work during the week. Help alleviate car traffic and carbon emissions.
