Interim president announcement May 21

Thank you from the Torgersons

If you think we have mojo, then this campus has mega-mojo! Judy and I were blown away by last Thursday’s program. Many thanks to Bob Larson for what was his final campus "production" and Godspeed as he leaves for Nottingham; to Karen Martin-Schramm, the quintessential planner and to Linda Skoda who manages the flow. Thanks to the incredible Campus Programming, Catering and Facilities teams: talk about mojo! Finally, a huge debt of gratitude to the Development staff and to each of you who secretly contributed to the endowment funds in our honor. We were speechless. 

It has been an absolute joy and privilege to share in such meaningful work together. Each of you is a treasure to Luther College and to us.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Holly Moore presented the paper, "Cultivating Difference: the Gardens of Adonis and the Order of Demeter" at the philoSOPHIA feminist philosophy conference, May 3 in Banff, Alberta.

Wanda Deifelt published two articles: "Displayed Bodies, Hidden Stories: Human Trafficking and Its Challenges." Diaconia: Journal for the Study of Christian Social Practice Vol. 3, Number 2 (2012): p. 114-127, and  "O vírus que Rompeu Barreiras e Quebrou os Muros da Igreja" Estudos Teológicos Vol. 52, No 2 (2012): Dossiê: Teologia e HIV e AIDS, p. 291-305. Wanda Deifelt presented a lecture at the Symposium on Theology and HIV/AIDS in San Jose, Costa Rica, April 24-25, titled "A pandemia da Aids e a vulnerabilidade de Deus" (The Aids pandemic and God's vulnerability).

Sally Mallam Hovden attended the Minnesota Association for Higher Education and Disabilities Spring Conference, May 17 in Chaska, Minn.

Retirement

Roger Jaeger, who has worked at Luther for more than 32 years, has announced his retirement effective May 31. In the weeks ahead we look forward to thanking Roger for his dedicated service to the college.

I wish to thank the nursing department for the fun ice cream reception on May 10 and to everyone who has wished me well on my retirement this summer. Luther has been a great place to work and I will always treasure the people I have worked with and gotten to know over the years.

Position openings

Accounting Clerk: Full-time Accounting Clerk. Primary responsibilities include processing vendor invoices and payment vouchers, maintaining inventory and issuing purchase orders and purchase permits, maintaining vendor relations, applying state sales and use tax regulations, purchase card administration and maintaining record of items purchased for capitalization. Position also is backup for processing bi-weekly and monthly payroll and oversees the collection of student loans. Candidates with one to three years of experience in clerical accounting desired. Qualifications include: high school diploma with post-high school education preferred; knowledge of generally accepted accounting and bookkeeping principles and procedures, strong verbal and written communication skills, superior organization skills, experience with Microsoft Office software and the ability to learn software specific to the position and ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Campus News and Visual Media administrative assistant: The News and Visual Media department seeks a 10-month, part-time (.50FTE) office assistant. Responsibilities include supporting both Campus News and Visual Media through writing press releases, distributing mass communication, managing schedules, supporting the creation of visual content and front desk management including interacting with clients and key constituents. Experience in communications field a must with preference going to candidates with experience in visual media. Candidates with experience in using digital SLR, Photoshop and video editing software desired. Post-secondary schooling with experience in communications field preferred. Experience working with students, familiarity with AP style and knowledge of web work a plus. Candidate must be able to pleasantly interact with clients in challenging situations. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite a must.
