COLLEGE OPERATIONS

OFS closes out end of year

The college's fiscal year ended May 31. The Office for Financial Services reminds all faculty and staff that supplies, materials, etc., must have been received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 12-13 budget.

Additionally, all outstanding travel expense reports, credit card reports, original invoices (no faxed copies), supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to OFS by June 12 to be included in FY 12-13 budget. Items for deposit that were in Luther's possession by May 31 should be brought to OFS immediately. Thank you for helping OFS close the year in a timely manner.

Copies of 'The Space Between Us' available

Copies of the Paideia summer reading for the Fall 2013 incoming class "The Space Between Us" by Thrity Umrigar are still available. These copies are free of charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who are not already receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. Please join in our conversation with the first-year class.

Facilities truck available

Facilities Services has a truck available for faculty/staff usage weekdays after 4 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday. The truck can be driven within a 15-mile radius of campus. It is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The vehicle is not to be used to haul dirt, compost or leaves, and should be clean and refueled upon return. To reserve a vehicle, call Facilities Services, 387-1010. 

Food Education Events

In conjunction with their CSA-reimbursement program, the Sustainability office is offering Food Education events throughout the summer, which include a variety of cooking classes, book discussions, tours and local farm workdays!  Now that CSA shareholders have signed up, registration is open to the rest of the Luther community. Sign up online now. Luther College Center Stage Series

Luther College Center Stage Series will offer rich entertainment experiences via 10 professional arts performances on the Center for Faith and Life stage during the 2013-14 season, Sept. 14-April 4. Tickets for Center Stage Series events may be purchased as a subscription package now through Aug. 23 at the Luther College Box Office or online at: http://www2.luther.edu/programming/centerstage/seasonticket/.

Archives Leadership Institute at Baker Village

Luther College Archives will host the Archives Leadership Institute at Baker Village June 15-22. A cohort of 25 archivists from across the country will attend the institute. During that week, the Archives Reading Room will be closed for researchers. Immediate need requests should be sent to <vagtsrac> and we will make arrangements to assist you. We will resume normal operations on Monday, June 24. Thank you for your patience.

Lunch break wind turbine tours

Thirty-minute wind turbine tours will be offered Thursday, June 20 and Thursday, June 27. Meet Jay Uthoff at noon in front of the Union. Aquatic Center open house

The campus community is invited to join alumni, friends and business leaders for an open house to view the new Aquatic Center at Luther Thursday, June 20. Refreshments will be served. A ribbon cutting ceremony with Decorah's Chamber Ambassadors will take place at 4:30 p.m. with an open house and tours to follow from 5-6:30 p.m. The official dedication ceremony for the Luther College Aquatic Center is set for Friday, Oct. 4. Help Desk Specialist candidate presentation Friday

Luther College hosts Iowa Prairie Conference July 18-20

Luther College will host the 14th Iowa Prairie Conference with the theme "Prairies on the Edge" July 18-20. This is the first time the conference, which moves to different sites in Iowa, will be held in northeast Iowa. The conference is open to anyone interested in prairies and is attended by a broad mix of prairie enthusiasts, educators, students, researchers and land managers. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, etc.

Members of the Luther College Laboratory for the Investigation of Mind, Body, and Spirit traveled to Chicago on May 2-4 to present the lab's research.  Nine students from the lab attended and presented three different research projects. Students were involved in conceptualization, study design, data collection and analyses, and interpretation. The three projects involved studies of: 1) forgiveness in police officers from across the nation, 2) forgiveness education in Sierra Leone, and 3) prayer, meditation, and writing techniques to enhance forgiveness. This research represents collaborations between the Luther lab and the National Police Suicide Foundation, the Lemonaid Fund and Grinnell College. Admissions visit coordinator: Immediate opening for a full-time position. Responsible for all facets of coordinating a prospective student visit. Strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary. Must feel comfortable interacting with people by email and in person. Must be able to multitask and work with constant interruptions while maintaining a positive, friendly attitude. Familiarity with the Luther campus helpful. Occasional Saturday and evening possible. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access is necessary. High school diploma required with previous experience in a customer service office setting. Administrative assistant in the Development office: Administrative assistant for the Annual Giving Program.  The administrative assistant will work within the Annual Fund team to support the efforts of the Annual Fund, reunion giving programs and the Class Agent program.  This position calls for creative thinking, strong organizational skills, and strong attention to detail. High school diploma and at least two years of post-high school education required.  One or more years of office-related experience with computer background necessary.  Must be proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing. Full-time payroll specialist: Primary responsibilities include processing bi-weekly and monthly payroll, maintaining data to create necessary payroll deductions, making payroll related payments such as FICA and federal and state tax withholding, preparing and distributing payroll reports such as W-2 and 1042-S forms, and other duties as assigned. Candidates with one to three years of payroll experience desired. Qualifications include: high school diploma with post-high school education preferred; knowledge of relevant IRS and other regulatory agency payroll regulations, strong verbal and written communication skills, superior organization skills, the ability to perform error free work within time restraints, experience with Microsoft Office software, and the ability to learn software specific to the position and ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Youth wanted: Decorah Public Library will host, “Dig Into Archaeology!” with Lilly Jensen, Education and Outreach Coordinator with the Winneshiek County Conservation Board. The event will take place Wednesday, July 3 at 3:30-4:15 p.m. in the covered parking lot of the library. Kids will be able to enjoy a mock archaeological dig as they search for artifacts and fossils at this come-and-go event. Discover and learn about the people and cultures of Iowa’s past. Learn about how this generation fits into Iowa’s history and how to solve mysteries from the past. Younger children will need an adult helper.
