Chris Norton to throw first pitch at Twins game
Tune in at 6:10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, as Luther College junior Chris Norton throws out the first pitch for the Minnesota Twins. The Twins vs. Indians game will air on Minnesota Fox Sports North; you can also live stream the game through subscription at mlb.tv.
Speech and Debate Center open
Are your students giving oral presentations in class? Do you want them to practice their presentations outside of class? Would you like your students to have help improving their presentation skills? The Speech and Debate Center (SDC-formerly the Speech Lab) will be open Sunday-Thursday, 5-10 p.m. in the Library ICN room. New locally roasted coffee in Sunnyside
A new, locally roasted coffee joins the menu this week at Sunnyside Café.
K'uun single origin coffee, roasted by Bean Masters Inc. of Calmar, Iowa, replaces Starbucks coffee at Sunnyside. Fernando and Barbara Vaquero own and operate Bean Masters, roasting coffee beans to-order in small batches. The company received the largest small-business grant awarded by Winneshiek County Development in 2011.
Starting Wednesday, Sept. 5, Sunnyside will open earlier each day, operating Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
Work-study supervisors
Reminder: Thursday, Sept. 6 from 9:45-10:45 a.m., all first year students are asked to attend an advising meeting. Students have been told by their advisers about this meeting, but many feel that their first priority is their work-study obligation during these hours. If a first-year student asks you whether there is any way to adjust or accommodate their hours so that they can attend this meetings, we would appreciate your support. Hanging Waste Baskets available
The Hanging Waste Basket is a small waste basket that hangs on your office's blue recycling bin, assuming you have one, and is meant to replace your office's black waste basket. It is designed to encourage waste reduction and recycling.

'Be Still' prayer-centering sessions
College Ministries invites the community to "Be Still," a weekly session of centering prayer 10:30-10:45 a.m. Thursdays in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. "Be Still" is an opportunity to resist nonstop busyness and deepen capacities for reflection, silence and wonder through group contemplative prayer. "Be Still" begins Thursday, Sept. 6.

Baker Village now powered by the sun
Alliant Energy recently inspected Luther's new 280 kilowatt solar photovoltaic array and gave its final approval for interconnection with the local power grid. The system, located north of Pole Line Road, is currently the largest in Iowa and it makes Baker Village the largest net zero (greenhouse gas emissions) facility in the state. Stories about the project appeared in several media outlets this summer including Iowa Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Radio and the Des Moines Register.
HFH 'Blitz Build' Sept. 8
The last of the Sesquicentennial Projects is to build the 2012 local Habitat for Humanity home. Contributions have now exceeded $40,000, and the basement is poured and capped. Luther and Decorah Habitat groups are seeking help for a "Blitz Build" scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8.
Volunteers are needed from 8:30 a.m. on; location is next to the underpass on Division Street. Tools and supervision are provided.

'Picturing the Parables' exhibit on display
An art exhibit titled "Picturing the Parables" is on display through Oct. 7 on the upper level of CFL. This art display will include numerous works completed by 20 different artists who have visually interpreted Christ's parables.
The 29 pieces of artwork on display will vary from time-honored and non-traditional media to abstract pieces that display how God resolved to use the incarnation of his son to spread the word of his own existence.
Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series begins Sept. 4
The 2012-13 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series: "Can We Talk?" will begin 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4 in the CFL Recital Hall. Brooke Joyce will present his lecture titled "I Have Nothing to Say and I Am Saying It: John Cage and the Musical Poetics of Noncommunication."
The lecture series is sponsored by the Paideia Endowment and is open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge.
'CAGE 100' series of events Sept. 4-5
Luther will host "CAGE 100," a series of events on campus that celebrate the life and work of the American composer John Cage, Sept. 4-5. Brooke Joyce will present a lecture on Cage Tuesday, Sept. 4, 8 p.m., in the CFL Recital Hall. The lecture, titled "'I have nothing to say and I am saying it'; John Cage and the musical poetics of non-communication," is part of the Paideia Text and Issues Lecture series and will feature student and faculty performers. Guest recital: Stacey Barelos Sept. 7
Stacey Barelos, Luther College alumna of 2000 and current assistant professor of piano and theory at Missouri Southern State University, will present a guest recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 in the Noble Recital Hall on the Luther campus.

CSS: The Water Coolers
The Water Coolers will perform Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall to kick off Luther's 2012-13 Center Stage Series of professional performing arts events.
Tickets for the performance go on sale Friday, Aug. 31 at the Luther Box Office, 387-1357. Tickets may also be purchased online at http://www.boxoffice.luther.edu. Tickets are $24, $22 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.
Described by the Associated Press as, "A breezy, satirical, Dilbert-like musical revue that tickles the ears and funnybones." The New York-based Water Coolers uses Broadway talent to deliver hilarious songs and sketch comedy about work, life and everything in between.
Listen Well, Speak Truth, Be Peace
Take part in the Journey Conversations interfaith contemplative conversation retreat with Luther students, faculty and staff from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 in the CFL Main Hall. The retreat is powerful as a stand alone experience. After the retreat participants have the opportunity to join a small group for the semester. Faculty Artist Series: Peter Lingen
Peter Lingen will perform a faculty guitar recital Sunday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall.
The program, open to the public with no charge for admission, will feature music from Brazil, Cuba, Paraguay and the United States. Much of the music is folkloric in origin such as "Danza del Altiplano" and "Cancion de Cuna" by Leo Brouwer and "Cancao" and "Rosto Colada Bolero" by Paulo Bellinati.
Guest recital: Kate Hamilton Sept. 11
Kate Hamilton, associate professor of viola at Concordia College, will present a guest recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the Noble Recital Hall with Jay Hershberger, associate professor of piano at Concordia College, on piano.
The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program includes pieces Ralph Vaughn Williams, Max Bruch, Fritz Kreisler, Frank Bridge and Johannes Brahms.
Decorah Area Community Day Sept. 15
The Decorah and Luther communities are invited to Decorah Area Community Day Saturday, Sept. 15. Come for a picnic lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Regents Center circle drive and stay for the football game at 1 p.m. in Carlson Stadium.
Cost for the picnic and admission to the football game is $2 for adults, children can eat and attend the game free. RSVP is required. Children may order a free "True. Blue. Norse." t-shirt at time of registration.

Internationally renowned organist Diane Meredith Belcher will perform the annual benefactor organ recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, CFL.

Loren Toussaint recently participated in a symposium on "New Developments in Forgiveness Intervention Research" at the American Psychological Association's annual convention. Research conducted by Toussaint and alumni Amy Owen and Alyssa Cheadle was recently included in a news story in "Good Lifestyle" magazine on forgiveness and health benefits. Lauren Kientz Anderson, visiting professor of Africana Studies and History, published "A Nauseating Sentiment, a Magical Device, or a Real Insight? Interracialism at Fisk University in 1930" in the 2012 Perspectives on the History of Higher Education, Vol 29, which came out in August.
Maryna Bazylevych participated in the NSF Short Course on Behavioral Measurement in Naturalistic Settings at Duke University in July. She also presented a research paper “Hippocratic into Hypocritical. Reinterpretation of Hippocratic Oath in Ukraine” for the Health in Transition Conference at the Romanian Academy of Sciences in Bucharest.
Eric Baack and colleagues published "Reconciling extremely strong barriers with high levels of gene exchange in annual
sunflowers" in the journal Evolution. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Australian Research Council.
Thomas C. Johnson presented "NFL Films and the Pairing of Pro Football and Television" at the Third International Conference on Sport and Society in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Jessica Paul collaborated with soprano Beverly O'Regan Thiele in a benefit concert in the soprano's hometown,
Elma, Iowa, Aug. 26, presenting a wildly diverse program that included songs by William Bolcom, Benjamin Britten, Rick Walters, Alban Berg and Andre Previn, with additional musical theater and country selections. Based in New York, Thiele has an active singing career in Europe and companies in the U.S., including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, New York City Opera and the Chicago Symphony.
