Emergency communication following local outdoor siren

In the event of severe weather, Luther College will provide information regarding a potential weather threat immediately following the City of Decorah deploying their siren system. Information explaining the specific nature of the threat will be posted at emergency.luther.edu. Luther's emergency communication team will then initiate other communication methods as necessary.

The City of Decorah siren is primarily an outside notification system not intended to notify those inside buildings. It is used for a wide range of weather notifications and should prompt those who hear it to seek further information from the National Weather Service.

Please look to weather.gov or emergency.luther.edu for future weather-related threats. 

Constitution Day information reminder

Sept. 17, 1787, was the day on which the Constitution of the United States was signed by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Independence Hall, Philadelphia. Constitution Day became a holiday in 1997 and is celebrated Sept. 17 each year. Prior to 1997, Sept. 17 was known as Citizenship Day.

Each year, in keeping with Luther's commitment to the role of citizenship in the liberal arts, and in accord with federal mandates, we offer various resources for greater understanding of the United States Constitution. To that end, Preus Library maintains a research website: lis.luther.edu/constitutionday with guides to several excellent learning opportunities.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Staff meeting Sept. 19 and 20

Come to the September staff meeting and try to stump a panel of "experts" with your most puzzling work-related questions, such as "Who is this KATIE everyone talks about?" or "What do I do if a mouse  scurries under my desk?"  The meeting will also include a report on the College Resources Council and information about the United Way.  The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19 and 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20.

Passport/headshot photo days

Faculty, staff and students who need a new passport photo or headshot for the faculty/staff directory should come to the Campus News/Visual Media Suite (formerly Public Information) between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.

Additional dates for passport photo or other headshot needs are: Oct. 26, Nov. 7, Nov. 21 and Dec. 3.

Art faculty show

Nine faculty members have their artwork on display through Oct. 7 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery. A gallery reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 as part of the homecoming festivities. 'Trace' exhibit by Jill Kambs on display

"Trace," an exhibit of works by book artist and photographer Jill Kambs is on display in Preus Library through Oct 12. 

Drawing from a background in language arts, photography and book arts, Kambs takes an interdisciplinary approach to her artwork. While the media and content of her works varies widely, it is conceptually unified through attention to detail and invisible structures.

'Building Your Online Brand' Sept. 18

SAC Diversity Committee presents Adam Carroll giving the lecture "Building Your Online Brand" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Valders Room 206.

Carroll's lecture will give insight on how to align an online image consistent with the personality, integrity, and work ethic of the student. With employers now hiring firms to research online, maintaining an appropriate online brand is more important now than ever.

Carroll, founder of National Financial Educators, encourages young people to gain complete control of their finances.

Faculty Artist Series: Michael Chesher Sept. 18

Michael Chesher will perform a faculty artist series clarinet recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in the CFL Recital Hall.

The program will include Mauricio Murcia Bedoya's "Columbian Dances" for clarinet duo, Yvonne Desportes' French Suite for clarinet quartet, Timothy Kramer's "Key Fragments" for solo clarinet, Beatriz Lockheart's "Estampas Criollas," arranged by Jorge Montilla Francis and Poulenc's Sonata for two clarinets.

Woman's Club meeting Sept. 18

Marcy Fadness, physician assistant at Family Care Clinic in Decorah, presents the Luther College Woman’s Club program “Sleepy Women: National Epidemic or Personal Problem?” at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18 in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Christenson book signing Sept. 20

Former Luther College instructor and Decorah resident Kathryn Christenson will be at Dragonfly Books at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. She will read from her new book "Knowing Rolf: A Wreath for My Son," a collection of prose and poetry. Christenson's late husband, Ron Christenson, taught political science at Luther College. This event is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served.

Valdivieso to lecture on 'New Photography' Sept. 20

Odalis Valdivieso, author and journalist, will present "New Photography" 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 in Room 203 of the CFA. The lecture is open to the public with no charge of admission.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Valdivieso is an artist who questions conventional assumptions of the limitations of photography. Her recent works focus on the intersection of urban landscapes and abstract spatial relationships. Her current system isolates the photographic moment and the physical materiality of a photograph.

Chinese movie, 'The Butterfly Lovers,' shown Sept. 20

"The Butterfly Lovers" is the Chinese legend of a tragic love story betweenLiang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, whose names form the Chinese title of the story. Often abbreviated to "Liang Zhu" and regarded as the Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juliet, the legend has been adapted into many operas and films, including "The Butterfly Lovers," an animated re-telling of the classic Chinese story. What is their inescapable Romeo-and-Juliet-type of fate? Find out at 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 in Hovde Lounge, Preus Library.

Faculty and Guest Performance: AGA Collaborative, Sept. 21

AGA Collaborative, consisting of Amanda Hamp, Luther College; Gretchen Alterowitz, UNC Charlotte; and Alison Bory, Davidson College, will present a new dance work at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21 in Studio II, Center for the Arts. "Like a turtle without a shell, or crow's feet" explores the sometimes serious, frequently funny experience of bodies and psyches in pain. Vigorous dancing and quiet contemplation layer individual and communal histories of hurting, creating a space for healing through staged performance. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Supported by Luther's Lecture and Fine Arts fund and an H. George and Jutta F. Anderson Award.

WSMS: 'Coming Home Again' Sept. 21

Water Street Music Series will present its second concert, “Coming Home Again,” at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 in Hotel Winneshiek’s Steyer Opera House.

The performance features local musicians and friends Ellen Rockne, Erik Sessions, John Goodin and Kathy Reed. Admission is $5. Reserve a spot now at www.wsmsdecorah.org. The event is sponsored by Hotel Winneshiek.

Family Weekend concerts Sept. 22

The Luther College Concert Band will perform in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22. Seven ensembles will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 in the CFL Main Hall as part of the Family Weekend Concert. Both concerts are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Book Shop hosts storybooks read in character Sept. 22

The Book Shop and students from Barb Bohach's education class will host a storybook reading on Family Weekend from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 in the lobby area of Union. The students, dressed as their favorite storybook characters, will read selections from various children's books. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Refreshments will be served. This is the third year for this event.

Sustainability House open house Sept. 22

The Sustainability House, 629 Center St., is having an open house during Family Weekend from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Come meet house members and learn more about the house. Refreshments provided.

Book Shop hosts book signing with Rossman Sept. 22

The Book Shop will host a book signing session with author Douglas "Dag" Rossman for his book "Way of the Elves: A Nine World Saga" from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 in the Book Shop. "Way of the Elves: A Nine World Saga" is a Norwegian mythological tale that takes readers to Alfheim, the mysterious and magical place of the Nine Worlds. The book is available for purchase in the Book Shop for $8.95.

Warren of 'PostSecret' project will lecture Sept. 25

Frank Warren, founder and curator of the "PostSecret" project will give a Luther College Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Warren’s lecture, “The Most Trusted Stanger in America,” discusses the power of secrets and his project "PostSecret."

A book signing, held in the CFL lobby, will follow the lecture.

Although this event is free, everyone needs a ticket. Tickets are available at the Box Office.

Eddie Daniels lecture Sept. 26

Speaker Eddie Daniels, who was imprisoned for 15 years for fighting the apartheid regime in South Africa, will present "Being a South African Anti-apartheid Activist" at 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in Valders Room 206. In prison, Daniels befriended Nelson Mandela, leader of the African National Conference, who praised Daniels for his "loyalty and courage, his sense of humour and justice, as well as total commitment to the struggle of the prisoners for the eradication of injustice and for the betterment of their conditions." The talk is open to the public with no charge for admission and is sponsored by Luther's Africana studies department.

Ashcraft and LoBianco faculty recital Sept. 27

Eric Ashcraft and guest musician Alexandra LoBianco will perform a faculty voice recital at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 in the Noble Recital Hall. The duo will perform tenor/soprano duets from "La Bohéme," "Cavalleria Rusticana," "L'Amico Fritz" and many more. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing' discussion Sept. 28

As a warm-up for the early-October theatre program production of "Much Ado About Nothing," join a book discussion sponsored by the Jones Professorship "Our Shakespeare" project. The discussion will be led by two long-time Shakespeare teachers, Emeriti Professors of English John Bale and Mary Hull Mohr at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Main 111. Free copies of the playscript will soon be available in the Book Shop. Discussion open to all Luther community members.

Sweet Honey in the Rock performs Sept. 29

Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall as part of Luther College's 2012-13 Center Stage Series of professional performing arts events.

Sweet Honey in the Rock is an internationally renowned a capella women's ensemble founded in 1973 in Washington D.C. The entire performance features themes centering on social justice.

Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, and may be purchased at the Box Office or online at http://www.boxoffice.luther.edu.

Two fundraisers for SCI CAN foundation Sept. 27 and Sept. 30
Chris Norton '15, developed his foundation SCI CAN, after encountering many people who suffered similar spinal cord injuries without the luxury of adequate insurance policies.

It was with this in mind that Chris, his family and friends got together to develop the Spinal Cord Injury CAN project. This organization has the simple goal of raising money in order to provide patients equipment that would benefit them in achieving their recovery goals.

Two fundraisers will be held in September to benefit the foundation:

Decorah's Culver's restaurant will donate 10 percent of profits made Thursday, Sept. 27 to the SCI CAN Foundation.

The Decorah Tour, a free ride/run/bike/walk will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 starting at Winneshiek Medical Center. The Decorah Tour has two goals; to provide families, friends, visitors and community members with a fun filled afternoon while simultaneously working towards the SCI CAN goal of raising $25,000.

Our second son, Sky North Pasche, was born Thursday, Sept. 6, weighing 7 lbs., 8 oz. He is already growing stronger and his overall health is good, but he was recently diagnosed as having Down Syndrome. We consider ourselves fortunate to be in such a supportive and loving community, and hope that you will join us in trying to provide a supportive and welcoming environment in which he can thrive and feel a part.

Reunion giving officer: Engages alumni through independent donor connections and also through a volunteer reunion committee structure to advance philanthropic interests in Luther. Primary responsibility is to cultivate and solicit donors and prospective donors regionally and nationally through personal visits and event contacts within the context of class reunion planning and giving, working primarily with the 35-year and 40-year reunion classes. Qualified candidates will have the bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of demonstrated work experience in development or a related area. Significant regional and national travel is expected, often 10-15 days per month.

Gift planning officer: Serves as an ambassador of the College to cultivate and inspire donors. Primarily responsible for meeting personally with Luther benefactors to secure gifts in support of capital, endowment and annual fund projects through both direct and planned giving. Qualified candidates will hold the bachelor's degree as well as have three-five years of demonstrated work experience in development or a related area with a proven track record of direct donor cultivation, solicitation and gift closure. Significant regional and national travel is expected, often 10-15 days per month.

Larson named vice president for communications and marketing

President Torgerson has named Rob Larson to the position of vice president for communications and marketing. Since the 2008-09 academic year, Larson has served as executive director of communications and marketing. Prior to that, Larson was an associate professor of management.

Jim Martin-Schramm spoke to the Root River Conference of pastors of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod about the "Energy Stewardship Initiative" of Lutherans Restoring Creation on Sept. 11 at Saetersdal Lutheran Church near Harmony, Minn.

Luther College will create an interactive, multimedia touch-screen display on campus to honor and recognize Luther alumni who have served in the United States military. A $1,000 grant from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation given on Sept. 12 makes the project possible.

With funding from a generous grant from the Associated Colleges of the Midwest and Mellon Foundation, a joint project initiated at Grinnell and Luther colleges called the Grinnell-Luther College Collaborative continues to promote the inter-campus collaboration of student-faculty research teams focused on the study of forgiveness and health. Several indexes of student growth attest to the positive impact of the project. A snapshot of learning gains and several scholarly products of this collaboration are listed at:
