Faculty, staff and students who need a new passport photo or headshot for the faculty/staff directory should come to the Campus News/Visual Media Suite (formerly Public Information) between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.

Student recital

Tyler Reece '13 will perform a voice recital at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.

Hannah Myott '13 will perform a soprano recital 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Student recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall. Both the recital and reception to follow are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Art faculty show

Nine faculty members have their artwork on display through Oct. 7 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery. A gallery reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 as part of the homecoming festivities. 'Trace' exhibit by Jill Kambs on display

"Trace," an exhibit of works by book artist and photographer Jill Kambs is on display in Preus Library through Oct 12. 

Drawing from a background in language arts, photography and book arts, Kambs takes an interdisciplinary approach to her artwork. While the media and content of her works varies widely, it is conceptually unified through attention to detail and invisible structures.

Warren of 'PostSecret' project will lecture Sept. 25

Frank Warren, founder and curator of the "PostSecret" project will give a Luther College Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Warren’s lecture, “The Most Trusted Stanger in America,” discusses the power of secrets and his project "PostSecret."

A book signing, held in the CFL lobby, will follow the lecture.

Although this event is free, everyone needs a ticket. Tickets are available at the Box Office.

Jim Martin-Schramm 25th anniversary of ordination Sept. 26

The community is invited to a reception at 10:50 a.m., immediately following chapel in the CFL lobby on Wednesday, Sept. 26 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Jim Martin-Schramm's ordination as an ELCA pastor. Martin-Schramm will preach in chapel Wednesday morning as part of the continuing series on Ephesians.

Eddie Daniels lecture Sept. 26

Speaker Eddie Daniels, who was imprisoned for 15 years for fighting the apartheid regime in South Africa, will present "Being a South African Anti-apartheid Activist" at 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in Valders Room 206. In prison, Daniels befriended Nelson Mandela, leader of the African National Conference, who praised Daniels for his "loyalty and courage, his sense of humour and justice, as well as total commitment to the struggle of the prisoners for the eradication of injustice and for the betterment of their conditions." The talk is open to the public with no charge for admission and is sponsored by Luther's Africana studies department.

Daniels book signing in Book Shop Sept. 26

Former anti-apartheid activist, Eddie Daniels will be in the Book Shop 2-2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, signing copies of his book,"There and Back: Robben Island 1964-1979". Daniels, from South Africa, spent 15 years in prison on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela.

Ashcraft and LoBianco faculty recital Sept. 27

Eric Ashcraft and guest musician Alexandra LoBianco will perform a faculty voice recital at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 in the Noble Recital Hall. The duo will perform tenor/soprano duets from "La Bohéme," "Cavalleria Rusticana," "L'Amico Fritz" and many more. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Musical insects on Sept. 27

Amy Morey '06, of the Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota is presenting a biology colloquium titled "Music to My Tympanum: The Interaction Between Insects and Music" at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept 27 in Valders 206. All members of the Luther community are invited to attend.

Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing' discussion Sept. 28

As a warm-up for the early-October theatre program production of "Much Ado About Nothing," join a book discussion sponsored by the Jones Professorship "Our Shakespeare" project. The discussion will be led by two long-time Shakespeare teachers, Emeriti Professors of English John Bale and Mary Hull Mohr at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Main 111. Free copies of the playscript will soon be available in the Book Shop. Discussion open to all Luther community members.

Sweet Honey in the Rock performs Sept. 29

Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall as part of Luther College's 2012-13 Center Stage Series of professional performing arts events.

Sweet Honey in the Rock is an internationally renowned a capella women's ensemble founded in 1973 in Washington D.C. The entire performance features themes centering on social justice.

Tickets are $25, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, and may be purchased at the Box Office or online at http://www.boxoffice.luther.edu.

Two fundraisers for SCI CAN foundation Sept. 27 and Sept. 30
Chris Norton '15, developed his foundation SCI CAN, after encountering many people who suffered similar spinal cord injuries without the luxury of adequate insurance policies.

It was with this in mind that Chris, his family and friends got together to develop the Spinal Cord Injury CAN project. This organization has the simple goal of raising money in order to provide patients equipment that would benefit them in achieving their recovery goals.

Two fundraisers will be held in September to benefit the foundation:

Decorah's Culver's restaurant will donate 10 percent of profits made Thursday, Sept. 27 to the SCI CAN Foundation.

The Decorah Tour, a free ride/run/bike/walk will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 starting at Winneshiek Medical Center. The Decorah Tour has two goals; to provide families, friends, visitors and community members with a fun filled afternoon while simultaneously working towards the SCI CAN goal of raising $25,000.

John Krebs performs piano recital Sept. 30

Pianist John Krebs will perform a piano recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program features works by contemporary composers Sebastian Currier, Timothy Kramer, Sheila Silver and George Tsontakis. Krebs will offer comments on each of the works preceding his performance.

Chinese moon festival party Sept. 30

Do you see the moon is getting full? Yes, it is the Moon Festival again.  Chinese Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, held on the 15th day of the eighth month in Chinese Lunar calender, is a popular harvest festival celebrated in China. This year, it falls on Sept. 30. Co-sponsored by Modern Languages and Literatures and Asian Student Association and Allies, a Moon Festival Party will take place from 6:30-9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the eighth floor Farwell Lounge. Come enjoy delicious mooncakes and fragrant tea, play Chinese games and learn about Chinese culture.

Homecoming concerts

Luther will celebrate Homecoming 2012 with a series of concerts Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5-7. The Jazz Orchestra will present a concert at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 in Marty's CyberCafé. Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band and Nordic Choir will also perform at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 in the Main Hall of the CFL. Both concerts are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Moeller presents Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Oct. 9

John Moeller will speak on "Politics, Democracy, and the First Amendment" 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Recital Hall of the CFL. The presentation, part of the college's Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Series, is open to the public with no charge for admission. Moeller will speak about the rights granted by the First Amendment and how it's possible to encourage free speech while maintaining decency and producing intelligent dialogues. The lecture is sponsored by the Paideia Endowment.

Pinkerton presents guest recital Oct. 9

Emily Pinkerton, singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Pittsburgh, will present a guest recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Pinkerton will perform with Luther ACM-Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Ethnomusicology Michael O'Brien and other guests. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and is sponsored by the Lecture and Fine Arts committee.

Eric Mandat to perform clarinet concert Oct. 10

Internationally recognized clarinetist and composer Eric Mandat will perform a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will consist entirely of original pieces created by Mandat. His musical focus is primarily on solo and chamber pieces for the clarinet. His music is featured in concerts and recordings by clarinetists throughout the world.

'The Dating Doctor' on campus Oct. 19

"The Dating Doctor" will be on the Luther College campus at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 at Marty's Cyber Café in the Dahl Centennial Union. David Coleman, AKA "The Dating Doctor" will address the issues facing today's students and staff. CSS: 'An Evening With Abigail Washburn'

Abigail Washburn, touring clawhammer banjo artist and folk singer/songwriter will collaborate with indie singer/songwriter Kai Welch for "An Evening with Abigail Washburn" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in the CFL Main Hall.

Tickets for the performance go on sale Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Luther Box Office. Tickets are $20, $18 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.

100 Wells Challenge benefit Oct. 27

The 2012 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America national youth gathering artists Agape, Lost and Found and Rachel Kurtz will perform a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

The concert is $15 general admission fee, with a group rate of $12 per person for groups of 10 or more. All proceeds will benefit the 100 Wells Challenge and the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Reunion giving officer: Engages alumni through independent donor connections and also through a volunteer reunion committee structure to advance philanthropic interests in Luther. Primary responsibility is to cultivate and solicit donors and prospective donors regionally and nationally through personal visits and event contacts within the context of class reunion planning and giving, working primarily with the 35-year and 40-year reunion classes. Qualified candidates will have the bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of demonstrated work experience in development or a related area. Significant regional and national travel is expected, often 10-15 days per month.

Gift planning officer: Serves as an ambassador of the College to cultivate and inspire donors. Primarily responsible for meeting personally with Luther benefactors to secure gifts in support of capital, endowment and annual fund projects through both direct and planned giving. Qualified candidates will hold the bachelor's degree as well as have three-five years of demonstrated work experience in development or a related area with a proven track record of direct donor cultivation, solicitation and gift closure. Significant regional and national travel is expected, often 10-15 days per month.

Eric Baack and John Delaney '10 published 'Intraspecific chromosome number variation and prairie restoration: a case study in NE Iowa' in the September issue of the journal "Restoration Ecology."

Communication Studies majors Rachel Woolsey '14, Jena Schwake '13, Cassandra Chalhoub '13 and Samantha Shimak '13 had research papers competitively selected for presentation at the 2012 Iowa Communication Association Convention Sept. 20-21. Woolsey won the top student paper award at the conference, which included a cash award and publication of her paper in the Iowa Communication Journal. All papers were written in COMS 357: Research Methods.

Communication studies faculty attended the Iowa Communication Association Conference Sept. 20-21. Derek Sweet, Thomas Johnson and Sarah Wilder presented a panel on "New Media and Popular Culture Pedagogy." Kim Powell presented on a panel titled, "Is technology replacing good teaching." Powell was also elected president of the Iowa Communication Association.

Norma J. Hervey, professor emerita, completed her third year as a Fulbright peer reviewer for American History applicants Sept. 10. She will teach for the 2012-13 academic year at Charles University and welcomes guests if any Luther faculty, staff or students visit Prague.
