Break shuttle driver needed

ELI Fall Focus Session
LIS will host the online ELI Fall Focus Session on "Emerging Technologies, Innovation, and Academic Transformation". Sessions will be screened in the Dahl Centennial Union Mott Room on Oct. 2-3. Answers to questions from staff meetings
There were a couple of questions asked at last week's staff meeting that required additional research. Here are the answers:
1. How did Lindeman Pond get its name?
Answer from Rachel Vagts: The pond was named by Professor Emeritus of Biology, Jim Eckblad, after Raymond Lindeman, an ecologist who pioneered ecosystem ecology.
2. When was the last year cows were milked on campus?
Answer from Steve Arneson: 1963
3. Is there a list of committees on the Luther website?
Answer from Janine Brandt: The committee roster on the Dean's page does include some all-campus committees and committees with staff and student membership, not just faculty. http://www2.luther.edu/
College catalogs distributed
Catalogs are being distributed to faculty and staff. Those who did not receive a copy or need an additional copy should contact the Registrar's Office, telephone 387-1167.
Student organization funding proposals
Student organization funding proposals must be sent via electronic submissions to the Student Life Office by 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. Organizations will be notified Wednesday, Oct. 10 via email of decisions regarding funding. In order to clarify anything about their proposals, a meeting will be held for representatives of each student organization at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the SOS Office. It is recommended that every organization attend, as decisions will be made. While attendance isn't required, Senate will make decisions on proposals based upon what they know about each organization. If there are questions about a proposal, and no representative present to answer them, this may impact the outcome of the proposal. Questions or concerns should be emailed to Laura Harney <harnla01> or Charlie Bruer <bruech02>.
SAC Christmas Cheer sponsors needed

KATIE courses to be removed
KATIE course sites older than fall 2010 will be removed from the KATIE server on Wednesday, Oct. 10 unless they've previously been designated to be saved. In preparation for the KATIE upgrade we are looking to remove as much material as possible so we discourage requests to "save all of mine." This does not affect any KATIE sites outside of term categories, i.e., Miscellaneous, etc.
United Way
The United Way of Winneshiek County has a goal of $160,000. Thank you to everyone who has already turned in your pledge form. Employees who turn in their form to Human Resources by Friday, Oct. 12 will have their name go into the drawing for prizes. Payroll deduction is an easy way to make a donation, and begins Jan. 1. If you did not receive a form, email <kelly.wedmann>. Your support makes a difference.
Grounds
The college lawns on the upper campus will be fertilized and spot treated for broadleaf weeds, especially along sidewalks and curbs beginning Friday, Oct. 12. The fertilization process will begin during the day on Friday and spraying will take place after 5 p.m. and continue throughout the weekend, weather permitting. This procedure is in keeping with Luther's turf management policy. If you would like a copy of the policy, contact Gary Brickman, telephone 387-1668.

Final week for faculty art show
Nine Luther faculty members have their artwork on display through Oct. 7 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery. A gallery reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 as part of homecoming festivities. 'Trace' exhibit by Jill Kambs on display
"Trace," an exhibit of works by book artist and photographer Jill Kambs is on display in Preus Library through Oct 12.
Drawing from a background in language arts, photography and book arts, Kambs takes an interdisciplinary approach to her artwork. While the media and content of her works varies widely, it is conceptually unified through attention to detail and invisible structures.

Celebrate homecoming 2012
Luther College will celebrate Homecoming 2012 Friday-Sunday, Oct. 5-7, bringing more than 5,000 students, alumni and friends of the college to the Luther campus for class reunions, sporting events, music, dance, theater and other events. The event is open to the public as well.

Homecoming concerts
Luther will celebrate Homecoming 2012 with a series of concerts Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5-7. The Jazz Orchestra will present a concert at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 in Marty's CyberCafé. Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band and Nordic Choir will also perform at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 in the Main Hall of the CFL. Both concerts are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Alumni book signings in Book Shop
Luther's Book Shop will host a book signing session Saturday, Oct. 6.
Luther College alumni Jerry Aaker, Jerry Twedt and William Bunge and Luther senior Kristina Nienhaus will be signing copies of their books in Luther's Book Shop located in the Dahl Centennial Union on Luther's campus.
The event, open to the public with no charge for admission, starts at 10 a.m. with Jerry Twedt presenting his book "Land of Promise, Land of Tears." Following Twedt at 11:30 a.m., Jerry Aaker will share his book, "A Spirituality of Service."
The book signing will resume at 1:30 p.m. when author Wilfred Bunge presents his book "Transformed by the Journey: 150 Years of Luther College in Word and Image." Kristina Nienhaus will sign copies of her book beginning at 2 p.m. Nienhaus is the author of the children's book, "Made of Love."
Theatre to present 'Much Ado About Nothing' beginning Oct. 4
Considered one of Shakespeare's best comedies, "Much Ado About Nothing" will be presented Oct. 4-11 by the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
Production dates are 5:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 and 6 p.m. Oct. 4, 6, and 10-11. All performances are at the Harvey Wilkins Plaza located outside in front of the main entrance to Sampson Hoffland Laboratories on the Luther campus.
Moeller presents Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Oct. 9
John Moeller will speak on "Politics, Democracy, and the First Amendment" 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Recital Hall of the CFL. The presentation, part of the college's Paideia Text and Issues Lecture Series, is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Moeller will speak about the rights granted by the First Amendment and how it's possible to encourage free speech while maintaining decency and producing intelligent dialogues. The lecture is sponsored by the Paideia Endowment.
Pinkerton presents guest recital Oct. 9
Emily Pinkerton, singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Pittsburgh, will present a guest recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Pinkerton will perform with Luther ACM-Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Ethnomusicology Michael O'Brien and other guests.
The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and is sponsored by the Lecture and Fine Arts committee.
Adventurer Thorleifsson lecture Oct. 10
Thorleif Thorleifsson, Norwegian marine explorer and adventurer, will present the lecture "A Voyage Around the North Pole: Modern Exploration and Climate Change" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Recital Hall.
The lecture is open to the public with no charge of admission. A reception with Thorleifsson and Mari Sæther, environmental counselor at the Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C., will be held following the lecture in Qualley Lounge.
Eric Mandat to perform clarinet concert Oct. 10
Internationally recognized clarinetist and composer Eric Mandat will perform a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will consist entirely of original pieces created by Mandat. His musical focus is primarily on solo and chamber pieces for the clarinet. His music is featured in concerts and recordings by clarinetists throughout the world.
Dieseth open house Oct. 11
Members of the Luther College community are invited to an Open House for Dieseth Hall 9-10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 11. Join members of the Residence Life staff for refreshments and a tour of the newly renovated Dieseth Hall. Please enter through the upper doors of Dieseth Hall. FAS: Spencer Martin and Jessica Paul Oct. 19
Spencer Martin and Jessica Paul will perform a faculty viola and piano recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus.
The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will feature pieces by Brenno Blauth, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Dale and Paul Hindemith.
Alpha Phi Omega adventure race Oct. 20
An adventure race, sponsored by the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity chapter, will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in Regents Center on the Luther College campus.
Fees for individuals who would like to participate is $10 for a student and $20 for a non-student. For a relay team, the student group fee is $15 and the non-student group fee is $30. Entries for the adventure race will be taken until Oct. 19.

Luther College Fall Fling community service day Oct. 20
Decorah residents can sign up for assistance with yard work and household chores. Student volunteers from Luther College's Student Congregation will help Decorah residents with spring chores Saturday, Oct. 20 when Luther holds its annual Fall Fling community service day. Luther students will help Decorah area with yard work, planting, light housework, window removal and cleaning, and other spring chores.

CSS: 'An Evening With Abigail Washburn' Oct. 20
Abigail Washburn, touring clawhammer banjo artist and folk singer/songwriter will collaborate with indie singer/songwriter Kai Welch for "An Evening with Abigail Washburn" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in the CFL Main Hall.
Tickets for the performance go on sale Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Luther Box Office. Tickets are $20, $18 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.

FAS: Jessica Paul Oct. 21
Jessica Paul will perform a collaborative piano recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Interfaith celebration Oct. 23
Interfaith Holiday Celebration: Eid al Adha Reception, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in Peace Dining Room. Join the MSAA, IFSA, College Ministries and the Luther Diversity Center for light refreshments and a brief program celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid al Adha. Eid al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, marks the end of the Hajj—the annual pilgrimage to Mecca—and celebrates Abraham’s faithfulness and obedience to God. Jews, Christians, and Muslims look to Abraham as an example of faith. Reception is free and open to all.
100 Wells Challenge benefit Oct. 27
The 2012 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America national youth gathering artists Agape, Lost and Found and Rachel Kurtz will perform a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
The concert is $15 general admission fee, with a group rate of $12 per person for groups of 10 or more. All proceeds will benefit the 100 Wells Challenge and the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Todd Green participated as a panelist via Skype for an event titled "Anti-American Sentiment in the Muslim World" on Sept. 25. The panel discussion was hosted by the Center for Religious Understanding at the University of Toledo.
Karla Suomala, co-edited the most recent edition of CrossCurrents, "Difficult Dialogues" Vol. 62, Issue 3, Sept. 2012, with Katharina von Kellenbach from St. Mary's College of Maryland. She also contributed an article titled, "Complex religious identity in the context of interfaith dialogue."
