Posters on the Hill Program deadline Nov. 1
The deadline to submit applications to the 2013 Posters on the Hill Program is Thursday, Nov. 1. This event, held in the spring in Washington D.C., helps members of Congress understand the importance of undergraduate research by talking directly with the students whom these programs impact.

Call for NCUR abstracts due Nov. 7
Luther students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2013 National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Luther will provide support for selected students to present at NCUR.
The conference is April 11-13, at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. Applications for the on-campus selection process are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Davis Projects for Peace
Luther has been invited to participate in the summer 2013 Davis Projects for Peace, funded by a $1 million gift by Kathryn Wasserman Davis, a lifelong internationalist and philanthropist.
Luther students interested in designing and implementing their own grassroots projects for peace are encouraged to submit proposals of three pages or less by Monday, Jan. 14. Each project selected receives $10,000 in funding.

United Way update
The Luther College community has shown a tremendous amount of support for the United Way of Winneshiek County. Together we have already contributed more than $22,000 for this worthy cause. Faculty and staff may continue to turn forms in to Human Resources through the end of the year. Thank you again for your support.
Critical application updates for faculty/staff workstations
As part of an ongoing effort to increase data security across campus, LIS will be pushing critical application updates to all faculty/staff Windows workstations in the upcoming days and weeks. A notification will appear on your screen letting you know that an update is ready to install. Once acknowledged, the installation process will run in the background, allowing you to continue working as normal. Questions? Contact the LIS Technology Help Desk, 387-1000.
Wellness reminder
Employees and spouse/partner covered by the Luther College health plan should complete the following steps by Dec. 31 in order to avoid an additional $25/month premium in 2014.
- Blood screening at health service or medical facility
- Health risk assessment
- Routine physical exam
- Wellness Check-Up Form filled out and sent to human resources.

Electronic W-2 sign up reminder from HR
Sign up for W-2's online. It is easy to do. For instructions and more information, go to hr.luther.edu. Go to "Forms for Faculty and Staff" and under "Tax Forms" choose "W-2 2012 Options."
Mac users: please do not use the "preview" application to view your W-2.
Faculty and staff who chose the electronic option for their 2011 W-2 do not need to do it again for 2012. Go to "W-2 electronic consent" under "Employee Profile" at my.luther.edu to see which option was chosen for 2011. Remember-the electronic option is the sustainable option.

Soviet propaganda poster exhibit Oct. 19-Jan. 20
An exhibit of reprinted Soviet propaganda posters from World War II, donated by Luther Professor Emeritus Richard Cole, will be on display on the main level in Preus Library through Jan. 20. Clara Bergan '13, curated the exhibition.
Chesla exhibit on display Oct. 22-Dec. 2
An exhibit of rust and salt prints created by artist Joe Chesla will be on display Oct. 22-Dec. 2 in the CFL. Chesla creates one-of-a-kind mineral infused rust and salt prints on specially treated fibrous paper from metal plates that are exposed to the natural processes of oxidization.
Religion Forum Lecture: Guy Nave Oct. 30
Guy Nave, associate professor of religion, will present a Luther College Religion Forum Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 in the CFL Recital Hall. His lecture, titled "Clamoring for Change: Christianity as a Hindrance or an Aid to Social Change," is open to the public with no charge for admission.
In a world where it seems everyone is demanding change and every would-be leader is promising change, Nave will ask what exactly is change? He will discuss what people want when demanding and promising change and what if any contribution Christianity makes in bringing about change.
Luther Residence Hall Trick-or-Treating Oct. 31
Luther Residence Hall Trick-or-Treating is from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31 in first-year residence halls. Luther community members are welcome to bring their families trick-or-treating through Ylvisaker Hall, Olson Hall and Brandt Hall. Participating rooms will be identified by an orange pumpkin on the door. Come decorate cookies in Olson, make crafts in Brandt and play games in Ylvisaker. Join us for trick-or-treating in the halls where the weather is always nice.
Shakespeare opportunity Nov. 2
Time to "brush up on Shakespeare" before the early November dance program performances of "A Tragedy Like Macbeth" with a book discussion led by two "Macbeth" experts, Jeff Dintaman and Kristen Underwood at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in Main 111. Free copies of the play are available in the Book Shop.
The event is sponsored by Mark Z. Muggli's "Our Shakespeare" project.
'Flexible Comedy' with Jonathan Burns Nov. 2
Luther College Student Activities Council Spotlight Committee presents "Flexible Comedy" with Jonathan Burns at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in Dahl Centennial Union, Marty's CyberCafé.
Combining comedy, contortion, juggling and sideshow stunts, Burns wows audiences with his interactive comedy experience.

Day of Prayer Nov. 3-4

Chef Barton Seaver lecture Nov. 4
Barton Seaver, chef and author, presents "Food, Fish and Future," a lecture on sustainable seafood and issues in Bristol Bay at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 in Olin 102.
The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Seaver is on a mission to restore people's relationship with the ocean, the land and with each other through dinner.

Sunnyside Café grand opening Nov. 8
Luther College's Sunnyside Café will celebrate its switch to K'uun Coffee, roasted locally by Bean Masters Inc., with a grand opening and ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. Truffles and biscotti will be available for sampling, and there will be special activities including a trivia game. Sunnyside is inside Luther’s Center for the Arts.
CSS: Luciana Souza Quartet Nov. 8
Luciana Souza, an innovator in the bossa nova tradition, fusing jazz and Brazilian samba into lyrical tunes, brings her quartet to the Center for Faith and Life at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.
Her program will feature pieces from two new projects: "The Book of Chet," a tribute to iconic trumpet player and singer Chet Baker, and "Duos III," which includes Souza's signature songs in the Brazilian bossa nova tradition.
SAC Diversity: Tani Diakite Nov. 9
Tani Diakite, a Malian blues-funk artist, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 in Marty's CyberCafé. Diakite's visit is sponsored by Luther's Student Activities Council's Diversity committee. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, available at the Luther Box Office or at the door the night of the show.
Junior Dance Camp hosted by Orchesis Nov. 10
Sign your child up for Junior Dance Camp hosted by the Orchesis Dance Group on campus from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 in the Regents Center North Gym. The kids will be split into small groups and will perform the dance they learn for parents, friends and family at 4 p.m. Ages 4-12 are welcome. Cost is $25. 'A Journey to Freedom' Veterans celebration
Celebrating Veterans 2012, "A Journey to Freedom," will be held in the Center for Faith and Life at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. The program will honor all veterans, and tell the story of the humanitarian efforts of the military during the Vietnam War. Speakers include: retired Surgeon General of the Navy, VAdm Adam Robinson Captain Paul Jacobs, retired and Naval historian, Jan Herman. The program will conclude with the presentation of documentary “The Lucky Few." This event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Todd Green's article, "Who Speaks for Europe's Muslims? The Radical Right Obstacle to Dialogue," was published in a special issue of CrossCurrents devoted to "Difficult Dialogues." The co-editor of the issue was Karla Suomala.
Karla Suomala was the Annual Wallenberg Tribute Lecturer this fall at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. Her presentation was titled, "Jewish-Christian Engagement in the 21st Century: The New (con)Texts." She also gave two additional presentations in the area, "Judaism and Christianity: The Ways that Never Parted?" and "Preaching The Pharisees: Reconsidering Difficult Texts."
Kristy Gould attended the Fall Meeting for the Comparative Cognition Society in New Orleans Oct. 12. She presented a research talk titled “Performance of Blue Jays on a Two-Choice Functional Tool Task” that included former and current student co-authors Abigail Seyfer ‘10, Debra Hansberry ‘10, Emily Lynn ‘12, Quinn Meyer ‘13 and Rose Brantner ‘10. Gould was also a member of the planning committee for the meeting and chaired a session of talks.
Kristy Gould attended the Society for Neuroscience conference in New Orleans Oct. 13-17 where she presented a research poster, “Seasonal Differences in Hippocampus Volume in a Scatter-Hoarding Corvid, the Blue Jay”. Co-authors included former students Rose Brantner ’10 andKatherine Roberts ’11, along with a colleague from Cornell University.
Mark D. Johns presented a paper, "Two Screen Viewing and Social Relationships" at the 13th annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers, held at the University of Salford, Manchester, UK, Oct. 19-21.
Marv Slind's review of "Norwegian American Women: Migration, Communities, and Identities," by Betty A. Bergland and Lori Ann Lahlum, appeared in "North Dakota History: Journal of the Northern Plains" (vol. 77, Nos. 3 & 4).

Phuc Phan '13, has been named the 2012-13 Luther College Presser Scholar for excellence in music. A 2009 graduate of the United World College of the Adriatic in Italy, he is the son of Tam Duc and Hoa Thi Dau of Hanoi. He is majoring in music at Luther. As Presser Scholar, Phan will receive a $4,000 scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year.
Philip Freeman presented talks this last week on Quintus Cicero's "How to Win an Election" at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Getty Villa in Malibu, Calif.
Kristin Swanson's essay "Judges as a Parody of Leadership in the Persian Period" was published in Focusing Biblical Studies: The Crucial Nature of the Persian and Hellenistic Periods: Essays in Honor of Douglas A. Knight, ed. Jon L. Berquist and Alice Hunt. New York: T & T Clark International (2012).

Don Jones and Rebecca Dominiczak ’13, were invited speakers at the third annual Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Liberal Arts Curriculum. The conference was held Oct. 13-14 and sponsored by the ACM and Grinnell College. Their presentation was titled “Using ACM Services When Bringing a Class to Chicago.”
On Oct. 25 at the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference meetings in Cincinnati, Ohio Richard Cole, emeritus Professor of History read a scholarly paper "Martin Luther and Islam: The Problem of Meaning in a Post Modern Age." The paper session was titled "Uses of Religion: Appropriation and Critique" and was chaired by Scott Hendrix from Princeton Seminary.
Jim Martin-Schramm presented "Climate Justice and U.S. Energy Policy" at the annual meeting of the Iowa chapter of the Methodist Federation for Social Action in Des Moines on Oct. 20.
For his outstanding service in the field of instrumental music education, Luther College has named James Ripley '81 of Kenosha, Wis. the 2012 recipient of the Carlo A. Sperati Award. The award is the namesake of Carlo Sperati, 1888 Luther graduate, professor emeritus, founder of the Luther College Concert Band and the driving force behind all music touring at Luther College.
Luther has named Bruce Tammen '71 of Chicago, the 2012 recipient of the Weston Noble Choral Award for distinguished achievement in the field of vocal music. Tammen was recognized for his work as an outstanding conductor, scholar and performer. Named for Weston Noble, Luther professor of music and conductor of the Nordic Choir from 1948-2004, the award honors music educators who continue the legacy of Noble.
