Staff Meetings Nov. 14-15
At the November staff meeting, Jay Uthoff will talk about the solar energy production facility and Diane Tacke will present information on salaries and benefits, health care, and the college budget. Educause online conference
LIS is offering access to the online Educause Annual Conference, Nov. 7-9, in the Dahl Centennial Union Borlaug Room. Sessions cover topics related to educational technology and are geared towards administrators, faculty, librarians and IT professionals. Critical application updates for faculty/staff workstations
As part of an ongoing effort to increase data security across campus, LIS will be pushing critical application updates to all faculty/staff Windows workstations in the upcoming days and weeks. A notification will appear on your screen letting you know that an update is ready to install. Flu vaccination clinic Nov. 7
Health Service will hold the next Flu Vaccination Clinic from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7. Students, faculty and staff may walk in, no appointment necessary. Cost is $20 for students, $25 for staff/faculty.
Wellness reminder
Employees and spouse/partner covered by the Luther College health plan should complete the following steps by Dec. 31 in order to avoid an additional $25/month premium in 2014.

Electronic W-2 sign up reminder from HR
Sign up for W-2's online. It is easy to do. For instructions and more information, go to hr.luther.edu. Go to "Forms for Faculty and Staff" and under "Tax Forms" choose "W-2 2012 Options."
Mac users: please do not use the "preview" application to view your W-2.
Faculty and staff who chose the electronic option for their 2011 W-2 do not need to do it again for 2012. Go to "W-2 electronic consent" under "Employee Profile" at my.luther.edu to see which option was chosen for 2011. Remember-the electronic option is the sustainable option.

Energy conservation pledge
Sign Luther’s Energy Conservation Pledge and challenge others to do the same. Luther is starting a new year for the Energy Conservation Pledge and the goal is to get 10 percent of students, faculty and staff to sign the pledge. Finals Prep Week reminder
A campus programming reminder to all that Tuesday, Dec. 4-Sunday, Dec. 9 is considered Finals Prep Week and is intended to provide additional space for students to prepare for tests, papers, and finals. These six days are set aside for academic preparation for finals, and Luther does not schedule public events during this time. Exceptions include only athletic events, social gatherings, Christmas in the Union and Kwanzaa.

Philharmonia and Brass Ensembles perform Nov. 6
The Luther College Philharmonia and Brass Ensembles will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the CFL Main Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Philharmonia will perform four pieces, including a piece composed by Luther's own composer-in-residence Brooke Joyce. The Brass Ensembles will perform eight pieces.
Sunnyside Café grand opening Nov. 8
Luther College's Sunnyside Café will celebrate its switch to K'uun Coffee, roasted locally by Bean Masters Inc., with a grand opening and ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. Truffles and biscotti will be available for sampling, and there will be special activities including a trivia game with prizes and live music. Sunnyside is inside Luther’s Center for the Arts.
CSS: Luciana Souza Quartet Nov. 8
Luciana Souza, an innovator in the bossa nova tradition, fusing jazz and Brazilian samba into lyrical tunes, brings her quartet to the Center for Faith and Life at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.
Her program will feature pieces from two new projects: "The Book of Chet," a tribute to iconic trumpet player and singer Chet Baker, and "Duos III," which includes Souza's signature songs in the Brazilian bossa nova tradition.
SAC Diversity: Tani Diakite Nov. 9
Tani Diakite, a Malian blues-funk artist, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 in Marty's CyberCafé. Diakite's visit is sponsored by Luther's Student Activities Council's Diversity committee. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, available at the Luther Box Office or at the door the night of the show.
Guest piano recital Nov. 9
Prominent American Pianist Christopher Taylor will present a guest recital during the Dorian Keyboard Festival at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 in the Noble Recital Hall. Taylor has concertized around the globe, performing throughout Europe and in Korea, the Philippines and the Caribbean.
Dance performances Nov. 9-17
"A Tragedy Like Macbeth," a dance work based on William Shakespeare's "Macbeth," will be presented Nov. 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17 by Luther College's Department for Visual and Performing Arts.
Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9, 10, 15, and 16 with an additional matinee performance at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. Performances are held in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts.
Junior Dance Camp hosted by Orchesis Nov. 10
Junior Dance Camp hosted by Luther's Orchesis Dance Group is 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 in the Regents Center North Gym. Ages 4-12 are welcome. Kids will be split into small groups and will perform the dance they learn for parents, friends and family at 4 p.m. Cost is $25. Email <larsje06> for more information or the registration form.
'A Journey to Freedom' Veterans celebration
Celebrating Veterans 2012, "A Journey to Freedom," will be held in the Center for Faith and Life at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. The program will honor all veterans, and tell the story of the humanitarian efforts of the military during the Vietnam War. Speakers include: retired Surgeon General of the Navy, Vice Admiral Adam Robinson, retired Captain Paul Jacobs and retired Naval Historian Jan Herman. The program will conclude with the presentation of documentary “The Lucky Few." This event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Symphony Orchestra performs Nov. 11
The Symphony Orchestra will perform in concert 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Main Hall of the CFL. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The Symphony Orchestra will perform "Montagues and Capulets" from "Romeo and Juliet" by Sergei Prokofiev and Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Digital photography workshop Nov. 14
The Visual Media office invites all faculty, staff and students to come to a workshop on digital cameras presented by Canon. Brian Matsumoto, a Canon Pro Products Trainer will present tips and tricks to make sure you are getting the best quality images from your digital camera. Varsity Band concert Nov. 14
The Luther College Varsity Band will perform a concert titled, "Standard Time" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.The ensemble is under the direction of Brent Dodson, Luther visiting assistant professor of music.
"Standard Time" features music from the classic wind band tradition. Musical highlights include Gustav Holst's "First Suite in Eb," Julius Fucik's "Florentiner March" and John Barnes Chance's "Variations on a Korean Folksong."

Carol Gilbertson served as the External Evaluator for the English Department at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., Sept. 24-26, as part of the department’s self-study. She also gave readings from her poetry chapbook,"From a Distance, Dancing," at Augustana College in Illinois on Sept. 11, and at Augsburg College on Oct. 11. Composer Philip Wharton’s choral piece “Nightrising,” adapted from Gilbertson’s poem “Night Rising,” premiered on Oct. 6, at Christ Episcopal Church in Tacoma, Wash., performed by The Esoterics, conducted by Eric Banks. The choir also performed the piece at various locations in the Seattle area on Oct. 7, and 12-14.
