Happy Thanksgiving

We are pleased to announce that offices can close early and staff are permitted to leave work at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 21. Most nonexempt employees scheduled to work 8 hours on Wednesday will work six hours and receive two hours of additional pay. Those employees who will have already worked their shift by 3 p.m. or those who must work their full shift because of the nature of their position will be given the option of taking two hours of paid time off on a different day. If there are any questions, please contact your immediate supervisor or Human Resources.

Critical application updates for faculty/staff workstations

As part of an ongoing effort to increase data security across campus, LIS will be pushing critical application updates to all faculty/staff Windows workstations in the upcoming days and weeks. A notification will appear on your screen letting you know that an update is ready to install. Reminder: online enrollment for flex plans available through Dec. 7

Reminder: employees may enroll online for the 2013 health and dependent care flex plans through Friday, Dec. 7. Paper enrollment forms may be submitted through Friday, Dec. 14.

Residence Halls secure 24/7 beginning Nov. 21

Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 21 Luther will move to a 24 hours per day/7 days per week secured building system within the residence halls.

Faculty and staff that use the Farwell elevator for parking purposes will need to have their Luther ID card activated to gain access to Farwell Hall since the building will be locked at all times beginning at Thanksgiving break. Requests must be made through department heads using the Luther Facilities work request online program at fixit.luther.edu. Card activation will take two business days to complete. Business hours for Farwell access are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The west door to Larsen Hall will remain open during office hours, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. for access to the Center for Global Learning and International Admissions office and the classroom located in the hall. Help students find ugly Christmas sweaters

Remind students to search for the Ugliest Christmas Sweater when home during Thanksgiving break. The annual student contest will be held in the Book Shop Wednesday, Dec. 5, however, students must come in to the Book Shop with their sweater for a photo before that day. 2013SP "LIVE" Katie site available

Instructors may begin building their courses for 2013SP by going to: katie-23.luther.edu/moodle/ and using their Norsekey.

This site will be referred to as "2013SP" while the current Katie site on which all courses prior to 2013SP are located will be referred to as "CURRENT."

Timeline for additional functionality:

Morsle migration utility will be implemented on CURRENT within a few days
Requests to have course resources backed up from CURRENT and restored to 2013SP in order to import materials into 2013SP courses can be made beginning Monday, Nov. 26 by going to: help.luther.edu
Requests for backup and restore should not include 2012FA or 2013JT courses

Luther’s new paper purchasing policy

Luther’s new paper purchasing policy requires all paper purchased and used by the College in the Document Center, Book Shop, and all departments and offices to be FSC-certified white, 8.5 x 11 inch, 20# copier paper made with at least 50 percent post-consumer fiber. This policy will assist in reducing the campus' overall carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2015, a goal outlined in the five year strategic plan. For more specifics about the policy, click here.

Beginning Spring 2013 with the new version of Katie, Norse Docs will be even more integrated with Katie. Participants will be introduced to the key features of Norse Docs in preparation for the upcoming Katie changes. Influenza vaccine available

Influenza vaccine is available for staff at the Health Service on a walk-in basis the following days/times through the remainder of the semester:
Mondays: 1-4 p.m.
Tuesdays: 9-11:30 a.m.
Thursdays: 1-4 p.m.

Cost is $25, which can be deducted from payroll. Ill students will be given first priority if it is busy during these times.

Twelfth Night performances

Twelfth Night, among the very greatest of Shakespeare’s plays, is a joyful and disturbing miracle play about gender, passion, delusion, and love. And the Malvolio letter scene is one of the funniest deception scenes in all of literature. "Shakespeare Performed" abridged one-hour class performances will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2; 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3; and 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 in CFA Studio 2, with a warm-up book discussion from 4-5:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in Main 111 led by Sean Burke and Carol Gilbertson. Luther College senior Georgianna "Annie" Whiteley of Wayzata, Minn., was named a Rhodes Scholar Saturday, Nov. 17. Whiteley was selected from a pool of 838 candidates nominated by their colleges and universities. She was the only student from an Iowa school selected for the honor. Rhodes Scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England, and may allow funding in some instances for four years. President Richard Torgerson was invited to speak Tuesday, Nov. 20, in Bloomington, Minn., at the annual Nordic American Thanksgiving Breakfast presented by the Sons of Norway. Other speakers include Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton and Marcia Zimmerman, senior rabbi at Temple Israel. Dayton will speak about freedom, Torgerson will speak about faith and Zimmerman will speak about the importance of family and friends.

Marv Slind spoke to Kristiania Lodge of the Sons of Norway in Rochester, Minn., presenting "Luther College Goes to War: Scuttlebutt and the World War II Letters" in recognition of Veterans Day.

J. R. Christianson presented a paper on "The Infrastructure of the Royal Hunt" at La Venaria Reale palace in Turin, Italy, on Nov. 7 as part of a conference on "Royal Hunts in the Europe of the Princes." He also chaired a session that included participants from Belgium, England, and Spain.

Karla Suomala recently presented "Complex Identity and the Future of Jewish-Christian Dialogue," at a meeting of the Christian Scholars Group on Jewish-Christian Relations, in Philadelphia.

Music faculty members Andrew Whitfield and Kathryn Reed presented a guest lecture recital at Pacific Lutheran University Oct. 15. The program, titled "From the Hand of Bach: In Search of Works for Younger Singers," is one outcome of a three-month fellowship Whitfield received for research and study in Germany during the summer of 2012.

Cooper Jacks, senior history major, presented a paper titled "The Third Reich's Use of an Enemy: Christianity" on Nov. 10 at the University of Northern Iowa's State Phi Alpha Theta (International history honor society) Conference.

Dan Davis gave a talk on "New Discoveries in the Deep-Water Archaeology of the Black Sea" at Case Western University on Nov. 14.

Kirk Larsen and student Calla Olson presented results of their research at the national meeting of the Entomological Society of America Nov. 11-14 in Knoxville, Tenn., and also had a "Luther gathering" with eight Luther alumni entomologists.

Loren Toussaint was invited to be part of a special issue of the Journal of Psychology and Christianity. His contribution was an article titled, "Laboratory for the Investigation of Mind, Body, and Spirit at Luther College: Developing Undergraduate Scholars in Psychology of Religion, Spirituality, Health, and Medicine." Victoria Christman presented the paper, "Hell Hath No Fury…: An 'Uproar' of Women in Antwerp (1522)," at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her panel was entitled "Negotiating Discipline with Consistories and Inquisitions."

Kate Narveson gave a paper titled "My most precious jewel: women’s manuscript devotional books as iconic objects," at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in Cincinnati in October.

Sustainability tip

Excerpts from the study "Public Support for Climate and Energy Policies in September 2012" from the "Yale Project on Climate Change Communication" are below:

A majority of Americans say they would vote for a candidate who supports a revenue neutral carbon tax if it created more jobs in the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries, decreased pollution or helped to pay down the national debt.
Six in ten Americans, 61 percent, say the U.S. should reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions regardless of what other countries do.
Majorities also support funding more research into renewable energy sources, 73 percent; providing tax rebates for people who purchase energy-efficient vehicles or solar panels, 73 percent; regulating carbon dioxide as a pollutant, 66 percent; eliminating all subsidies for the fossil-fuel industry, 59 percent; and expanding offshore drilling for oil and natural gas off the U.S. coast, 58 percent.
