Director of Center for Sustainable Communities announced
I am pleased to announce Jon Jensen has been appointed to a three-year term as Director of the Center for Sustainable Communities. Much has been achieved to advance Luther's goals for sustainability. Jon has played a central and important role in those achievements. It is our intention to launch the Center during the spring term 2013. Please join me in congratulating Jon on this appointment.

December staff gathering Dec. 12

Bi-weekly payroll Jan. 2
The Cabinet has approved Dec. 24-25, 31 and Jan. 1 as holidays. This makes a very tight turnaround time for processing bi-weekly payroll for the pay period ending Dec. 21 with a pay date of Jan. 2. Timecards are due in the Payroll Office by noon Friday, Dec. 21. Employees should estimate, based on their normal work schedule, what their Friday work hours will be. Any adjustments to these estimates should be indicated on your next timecard and will be applied to the next pay period.
Supervisors, please sign and account for all time cards. Do not send timecards in campus mail, rather hand-deliver them to the Payroll Office Dec. 21. Call Mary, 387-1135, in Payroll or Peggy, 387-1531, in OFS with questions or concerns. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Tag your bicycle before Dec. 17
In an attempt to rid the campus of bikes abandoned in bike racks on campus Facilities Services is asking members of the Luther community to tag bikes if they will be using their bike during the winter months.
Bike tags can be obtained from the Welcome Desk, Residence Hall Service Centers, Facilities, Security staff members and near the exit of the Dining Hall.
All bikes without tags will be removed Dec. 17-18. Luther is not responsible for replacing locks or cables that need to be cut for removal of bikes. Contact Gary Brickman with questions, 387-1668. Thank you for your cooperation.

McElroy Fellowships nominations sought
Nominations of graduating seniors intending to pursue a Ph.D. in any field are being sought for the McElroy Fellowships. The fellowship includes a $30,000 stipend over a three-year period. Luther may nominate only one candidate, but only 10 colleges may submit nominees for the two annual awards. Travel and Transport partnership ended

2013-14 Distinguished Lecture Suggestions
Planning is currently underway for 2013-14 distinguished lecturers. Submissions welcome of lecturers/ideas that could have cross campus appeal, offer connections to academic and campus initiatives, and be compelling on campus and in the community. This would include the possibility to replace a smaller annual lecture with a big impact through partnership. World Wide Book Drive collection Dec. 9-14
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee is collecting books for the World Wide Book Drive Dec. 9-14. For every viable book donated, we receive $1 that we donate back to the community. We appreciate faculty and staff support during the first semester and look forward to a great second semester .
If there are old editions of text books that you would like to properly recycle or donate to be reused, let us know at <pierma01> and we will pick them up. We will be more than happy to take just one, 10 or more! Thank you for your donation and support.

Development reception honoring retirees Dec. 11
The Development Office is honoring more than 56 years of service to the college from three of our team who will retire at the end of 2012. Jim Anderson, Tom Murray and Dean Nelson '69 have been an integral part of the success of the college development efforts. We will host a public reception for them from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Hammarskjold Lounge. Please join us as we thank them for their many years of service to Luther and wish them well for retirement.
Hotdog Extravaganza! Dec. 14
We hope you're "All Shook Up" about the Hotdog Extravaganza! Elvis and his elves are looking forward to seeing you Friday, Dec. 14 in the Financial Aid Office. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., all will be provided but please bring your own beverage! Retirement reception for Rich Tenneson Dec. 20
A retirement reception for Rich Tenneson will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20 in Hammarskjold to thank him for his service to Luther as Director of Facilities Services. Please join in bidding him a fond farewell. Rich is retiring after 25 years of employment at Luther.
Norse Community Day Jan. 5
The community is invited to the mid-winter Norse Community Day sponsored by Bank of the West and Luther College Saturday, Jan. 5. Area families, alumni, parents and friends are invited to attend Norse men's and women's swimming at 1 p.m. at the pool and Norse women's and men's basketball games at 2 and 4 p.m. with no charge for admission. The local "Just for Kix" dancers will perform at halftime of both games.
There will be a free community picnic with hot dogs, chips, water and ice cream cones, between basketball games from 3:30-5 p.m. in the North Gym of the Regents Center, sponsored by Bank of the West and the Luther College Alumni Office. Shiva will be Farwell Distinguished Lector Feb. 26
Campus Programming is pleased to welcome Vandana Shiva who will give this spring’s Farwell Distinguished Lecture, "Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the CFL Main Hall. Shiva is one of the world’s most respected environmental activists and feminists, advocating for a just and sustainable future through nonviolence, inclusion and sharing of resources. All are also invited to join Shiva for a conversation in the CRH at 2:30 p.m.
Paul Farmer to address Nobel Peace Prize Forum March 8-10
This year's Nobel Peace Prize Forum will be held in Minneapolis March 8-10. Last year the event sold out, so register early. Luther will charter a bus to take people up and back for the Saturday, March 9 program focused on the relationship of health and science to global security. The Forum will include a keynote address by Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health, along with break-out sessions and workshops with thought leaders and scientists who are reshaping our world. Thanks from the Book Shop
Thanks to all who entered the Ugly Christmas Sweater and Ugly Christmas Decoration contests and to all who came to watch the sweater style show in the Book Shop. Winners of the sweater contest were: First-Jacob Geis, Second-Annika Ring and Third-Abby Carpenter. Winner of the decoration contest was Vicky Jaeger. Sweater entry pictures are displayed in Book Shop windows.

Alfredo Alonso Estenoz gave a presentation about the reception of Jorge Luis Borges's work in Cuba at the Symposium on the Reception of Borges at the University of Pittsburgh on Nov. 8-9. He also published the article "'Eternamente efímero': la paradoja en Virgilio Piñera" on the journal La Habana Elegante, Fall-Winter 2012 issue.
Luther College students Emma Lofthus, Maddy Kofoed and Callie Mabry presented their work at Streamlines: An Undergraduate Conference Celebrating Language, Literature, and Writing, Saturday, Nov. 10, at Loras College in Dubuque. Streamlines, hosted by Loras, Clarke University and the University of Dubuque, gives undergraduate students at colleges and universities the opportunity to share their scholarship and creativity.
Luther College students, Erik Linn-Molin, Shane Wilson, Donald Lee-Brown, Sarah McRoberts and Clara Olson, presented at the 2012 "Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Science," Nov. 2-3 at Washington University in St. Louis. The Symposium provides undergraduates in the fields of mathematics, physical sciences and computer science an opportunity to present their research projects and results to their peers and faculty.
Michael O'Brien's composition for cello quartet,"Tres danzas populares argentinas," has just been published by Ludwig Masters.
The Honors Advisory Committee is pleased to announce that students Andrea Berkeland and Kirsten Norderhaug have been awarded the Wigeland/American-Scandinavian Prize for Study in Scandinavia in 2013.
Kathy Reed will co-direct the Burning Bright concerts at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22 at First United Methodist Church, 302 W. Broadway, Decorah. Burning Bright, a group of Decorah-area professional and amateur musicians, will offer their 16 annual benefit concert this season titled “Coming Light.” Tickets are on sale at Oneota Community Co-op, Kephart's Music Center, and Agora Arts. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. Advance purchase is recommended since performances consistently sell out. Suggested donation is $12, with a minimum of $6. Co-directing with Reed is Otter Dreaming, pianist/organist, composer, and folk musician. Dreaming and Reed also arranged or composed many of the pieces in the concert.
