ANNOUNCEMENTS
Presidential Search update
The Presidential Search Committee has now completed the reference checking process and have selected five candidates as semi-finalists. These individuals have been invited to meet confidentially with the search committee in Minneapolis in early January.
Upon completion of the interviews two or three finalist candidates will be invited to the campus for meetings with all members of the Luther community in February. After meeting with the candidates the campus will have an opportunity to provide written input. The committee will then meet to prepare its recommendation to the Board of Regents.

Bi-weekly payroll Jan. 2
The Cabinet has approved Dec. 24-25, 31 and Jan. 1 as holidays. This makes a very tight turnaround time for processing bi-weekly payroll for the pay period ending Dec. 21 with a pay date of Jan. 2. Timecards are due in the Payroll Office by noon Friday, Dec. 21. Employees should estimate, based on their normal work schedule, what their Friday work hours will be. Any adjustments to these estimates should be indicated on your next timecard and will be applied to the next pay period.
Supervisors, please sign and account for all time cards. Do not send timecards in campus mail, rather hand-deliver them to the Payroll Office Dec. 21. Call Mary, 387-1135, in Payroll or Peggy, 387-1531, in OFS with questions or concerns. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Flexible spending reimbursement checks
Flexible spending reimbursement checks for health and dependent care claims will be processed as follows over the Christmas/New Year holidays:
- Claims received at Midwest Group Benefits by Noon on Wed. Dec. 26 will be processed on Thurs. Dec. 27.

McElroy Fellowships nominations sought
Nominations of graduating seniors intending to pursue a Ph.D. in any field are being sought for the McElroy Fellowships. The fellowship includes a $30,000 stipend over a three-year period. Luther may nominate only one candidate, but only 10 colleges may submit nominees for the two annual awards. 2013-14 Distinguished Lecture suggestions
Planning is currently underway for 2013-14 distinguished lecturers. Submissions welcome of lecturers/ideas that could have cross campus appeal, offer connections to academic and campus initiatives, and be compelling on campus and in the community. This would include the possibility to replace a smaller annual lecture with a big impact through partnership. J-Term chapel
J-term provides an opportunity for new patterns and some space for reflection. Join us in chapel as we explore faith through word and song on Mondays, in silent meditation on Wednesdays, and through movement on Fridays. This J-term, listen to God's call to "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).
The community is also invited to join us for our Sunday services, Holy Communion at 10 a.m., and Sunday night, student-led service, Focus, at 9:30 p.m. Join us also
for Wednesday Night Eucharist at 9:30 p.m., followed by a time of fellowship and food.
Google (Norse) Docs Workshops
Beginning spring 2013 with the new version of Katie, Norse Docs will be even more integrated with Katie. Participants will be introduced to the key features of Norse Docs in preparation for the upcoming Katie changes. Facilities Services
Facilities Services will adjust the temperatures in campus buildings when the college is closed over the holidays. For most buildings, the heat will be set at the unoccupied set point, which may be 60 degrees unless an event shows up on the Ad-Astra program. Anyone working during this time should notify Facilities Services, 387-1146, so appropriate temperature adjustments can be made for the area.
Loyalty Hall will have a normal schedule Dec. 31.

Retirement reception for Rich Tenneson Dec. 20
A retirement reception for Rich Tenneson will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20 in Hammarskjold to thank him for his service to Luther as Director of Facilities Services. Please join in bidding him a fond farewell. Rich is retiring after 25 years of employment at Luther.
Norse Community Day Jan. 5
The community is invited to the mid-winter Norse Community Day sponsored by Bank of the West and Luther College Saturday, Jan. 5. Area families, alumni, parents and friends are invited to attend Norse men's and women's swimming at 1 p.m. at the pool and Norse women's and men's basketball games at 2 and 4 p.m. with no charge for admission. The local "Just for Kix" dancers will perform at halftime of both games.
There will be a free community picnic with hot dogs, chips, water and ice cream cones, between basketball games from 3:30-5 p.m. in the North Gym of the Regents Center, sponsored by Bank of the West and the Luther College Alumni Office. To attend the picnic, RSVP is requested by noon Wednesday, Jan. 2 to the Alumni Office at 387-1861, <alumni> or online.
Students help Decorah residents Jan. 12, 19
Luther students will help Decorah residents with yard work, snow shoveling and household chores. The service days, God's Helping Hand, are similar to the fall and spring flings sponsored by college ministries.
The event is open to Decorah residents free of charge, but those who are elderly or handicapped will be given priority. Decorah residents can register at 387-1271 or <ministry>. Please provide a brief explanation of the work you would like completed.
Shiva will be Farwell Distinguished Lector Feb. 26
Campus Programming is pleased to welcome Vandana Shiva who will give this spring’s Farwell Distinguished Lecture, "Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the CFL Main Hall. Shiva is one of the world’s most respected environmental activists and feminists, advocating for a just and sustainable future through nonviolence, inclusion and sharing of resources. All are also invited to join Shiva for a conversation in the CRH at 2:30 p.m.
Paul Farmer to address Nobel Peace Prize Forum March 8-10
This year's Nobel Peace Prize Forum will be held in Minneapolis March 8-10. Last year the event sold out, so register early. Luther will charter a bus to take people up and back for the Saturday, March 9 program focused on the relationship of health and science to global security. The Forum will include a keynote address by Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health, along with break-out sessions and workshops with thought leaders and scientists who are reshaping our world. Retirement
Jean Dickman, who has worked for Luther for 44 years, has announced her retirement effective Jan. 18. In the weeks ahead we look forward to thanking Jean for her dedicated service to the college.
ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Gregory Peterson was a panel presenter on The Liberal Arts Degree in Music at the 88th Annual Meeting of the National Association of Schools of Music in San Diego, Calif. on Nov. 18. Peterson's paper concerned goals for the preparation of graduating students.
Thomas C. Johnson's article "Deconstructing NFL Films' They Call It Pro Football" appears in the fall 2012 issue of "Teaching Media."
In 2009, the Luther College student senate began exploring the possibility of a Rideshare program accessible to students. Brad Miller and Luther student Kevin Williams developed an online program in which to coordinate rides. Folks outside the Luther community have recognized the success and accessibility of this program in the past year. Jen Abraham, sustainability coordinator at Graceland University, started exploring in depth Luther's sustainability programs that she could implement at Graceland. Nathan Haines '13, recently had a phone conference with Graceland University to help their information services department implement their own Rideshare program. He has been working on the program for the past two years and presented the Rideshare program at the AASHE conference this fall. The ability for Luther to extend its Rideshare computer program to other schools allows the college to be a model and leader in sustainability. The Luther-built program at Graceland was pronounced up and running the weekend of Dec. 1.
