ANNOUNCEMENTS

January staff meeting

"Get a Jumpstart on 2014: Effective Time Management Strategies" is one of the topics for the January staff meeting led by Tabita Green, and Amy Wrightsman will be on hand to talk about risk and fraud. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.

Important message from Health Service

Due to an overwhelming inventory of flu vaccine, Health Service reminds students, staff, faculty, spouses and significant others that we still have the flu vaccine available. The Health Department in Decorah has run out, but Health Service still has vaccine and we have reduced our fee to $20. Influenza is officially widespread now in Iowa and Minnesota. Stay healthy by getting your flu shot today, no appointment necessary.

Increase in postage

An increase in the cost of postage stamps will occur Sunday, Jan. 26. Take this opportunity to anticipate future stamp needs. Contact Deb in the Book Shop, 387-1832 for large departmental stamp orders. Please submit your order by Wednesday, Jan. 22.

And finally...

January is International Brain Teaser Month. Here are the answers for last week's brain teasers:

1. It is well known that there are seven months with 31 days - January, March, May, July, August, October and December. February is always the shortest month, with only 28 days (or 29 days in a leap year). However, it is a little known fact that one month of the year is always longer than the others. Which month is it?

September (longest=most letters)

2.There’s one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends. What is it?

Boxing

3. Only four words in Standard English begin with the letters “dw”. They are all common. Name two of them.

Dwindle, dweeb, dwarf, dwell

4. Where are the lakes that are referred to in the “Los Angeles Lakers”?

Minnesota's

5. Beulah died in the Appalachians while Craig died at sea. Everyone was much happier with Craig’s death. Why?

They were storms.

6. Two children were playing checkers and each played five games. Both children won the same number of games yet there were no ties. How is this possible?

They weren't playing each other.

7. Imagine you’re alone in a boat with a large hole in the bottom. Sharks are swimming around you on all sides and the boat is sinking fast. How do you survive?

Imagine a cork for the boat, imagine a rescue helicopter, imagine you have "shark whisperer" skills, basically USE YOUR IMAGINATION or STOP IMAGINING.
