Luther College presidential search committee recommends Carlson for college president

The Luther College Board of Regents is pleased to announce that at its just completed spring meeting, the presidential search committee unanimously recommended Paula J. Carlson for election as Luther College’s 10th president.

Carlson will visit the Luther campus on Thursday, Feb. 27. As part of her campus tour, the campus community is invited to meet her at an informal gathering in the Peace Dining Room from 9:45 to 11 a.m.

The Board of Regents will convene a special meeting on Friday, Feb. 28, to elect the college’s next president. Following the election, a formal welcoming ceremony will be scheduled to introduce Luther’s 10th president to the Luther College community.

Staff meeting time change

Please note the time change for the Thursday staff meeting. The meeting will now be offered in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, and 8:45-9:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, to accommodate the reception for Dr. Carlson from 9:45 to 11 a.m.

Reminder: Summer work applications

Summer collaborative research

Applications are being accepted for summer student/faculty collaborative research at Luther. Guidelines available at https://www2.luther.edu/academics/dean/scholars/grants/. Proposals are due in the Dean's Office Monday, March 3.

Student research symposium

Applications for students to present at the annual Luther College Student Research Symposium must be submitted by Friday, March 14. Information about the symposium, the general schedule for the day, and the online application is available at http://www2.luther.edu/symposium .

Health service blood panel screenings

Health service is unable to offer blood panel screenings this semester. A $45 walk-in community wellness test (PSA for males is an additional $40) at Winneshiek Medical Center will be reimbursed at 100 percent for 2014 health care participants. This is available from 7 a.m.-noon Monday - Friday, with a 12-hour fasting. Pay for the panel at the WMC registration desk and submit the receipt to Midwest Group Benefits for reimbursement.

Blood screenings done elsewhere will be reimbursed at the amount equal to the cost listed above. For example, if you are a male who has a screening done in La Crosse at the cost of $200, you will be reimbursed $85 for a blood screening and PSA. The remaining $115 will be applied to your deductible or co-pay.

Flu Vaccine still available

Flu vaccine is still available at Health Service. According to the Center for Disease Control it is not too late to receive a flu shot. During some influenza seasons, the incidence of infection may not peak until April or May. Staff, faculty, spouses/significant others and children in the household age 18 and over are welcome to come in for a flu vaccine. Cost of the vaccine is $20.

Join Luther's 'Promises to Students' discussion

Faculty and staff are invited to provide feedback on the "Luther College Promises to Students," a working document created to articulate outcomes students expect from a Luther education. Faculty dates to participate in the discussion are Tuesday, Feb. 25 and Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 3-4 p.m. in the Mott room. Staff dates to participate are Thursday, Feb. 27 and Tuesday, March 4 from 4-5 p.m. in the Mott room.

Upcoming Peace Brunch March 2, 9 and 16

Please join us for Peach Brunch from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 9 and 16, in Peace Dining Room. Diabetes prevention program

Learn helpful prevention tips for Type 2 diabetes from noon-12:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in the Mott room. Campus dietitian and certified diabetes educator Anne Blocker will lead the discussion on diabetes risk factors, interpreting lab results and lifestyle changes for prevention.

Rasmussen pre-lecture discussion

Larry Rasmussen will present "Vocation and Sustainability" at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the CRH. He has two articles published in the current issue of the Journal of Lutheran Ethics, "Climate Change as a Perfect Moral Storm" and "Lutheran Sacramental Imagination." Jim Martin-Schramm will facilitate a discussion about these articles for all members of the Luther community from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in Preus Library, Hovde Lounge. Chapel this week

David Briggs performance

David Briggs, English composer and concert organist, will present an improvisation concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the Center for Faith and Life. As part of the concert, Briggs, who is making his second appearance at Luther, will improvise a score to accompany the 1925 silent film "The Phantom of the Opera." The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Nobel Peace Prize nominee on campus

Steinar Bryn of the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer, Norway, will be on campus at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Shirley Baker Commons. Bryn, a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, will discuss the Nansen Center's work in the Balkans in the aftermath of the wars of the 1990's, and show the award-winning film "Reunion."

Faculty Artist Series

Luther College's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" concert series will feature guest artist Dylan Chmura-Moore, performing music for trombone and electronics at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public and features recent works for trombone and electronics. Chmura-Moore is a performer and advocate of music, and enjoys new and original endeavors to which he may articulate his voice.

SAC Spotlight presents 'Dueling Pianos'

Entertaining Midwestern audiences with their wickedly fast fingers and humorous dialogue, SAC Spotlight brings "Dueling Pianos" to the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in Marty's. Two professional players sing and entertain the audience with songs ranging from Top 40 to classic rock, and everything in between. Be prepared to laugh and sing along at this entertaining event! Tickets are $5.

Peace and Justice Day

Live streaming of keynote addresses at the Peace Prize Forum Faith and Justice day this Saturday, March 1, will be available at http://nobelpeaceprizeforum.org/. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, will speak at 9:30 a.m. and Sister Helen Prejean at 4 p.m.

Ethnic Arts Festival

The Ethnic Arts Festival will once again celebrate the diverse and vibrant cultures represented in the Luther community Saturday, March 1. Events happening around campus include a Country Fair from 1-4 p.m. in Williams Lounge and Oneota Market where children can tour the world and get their "passport" stamped, street food sampling from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room and entertainment at 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

The Country Fair and entertainment are open to the public with no charge for admission. The food sampling requires a ticket. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-10 and $5 plus a meal swipe for Luther students. Tickets may be purchased online at tickets.luther.edu or via the Luther Ticket Office.

Women and Gender Studies program presents lecture by Donna Red Wing

Women & Gender Studies program presents a lecture by Donna Red Wing, executive director of One Iowa, through funding provided by the Lucille Brickner Brown Price Endowment. The program, held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 2, in Olin 102, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

One Iowa is a team of organizers who support full equality for LGBT individuals living in Iowa through grassroots efforts and education. Formed in 2005, the organization has been an effective advocate for the community. In coalition with progressive and political allies, recent achievements include civil rights legislation to protect the LGBT community against employment and housing discrimination, safe schools legislation establishing anti-bullying policies in Iowa's schools and defeating anti-marriage legislation.

Dorian Band Festival

Luther College will host the 66th annual Dorian Band Festival March 2-3. The first festival concert, featuring Luther College bands, begins at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 2, followed by the Dorian Band Festival Grand Concert at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3. Both concerts will be held in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life and are open to the public with no charge for admission.

SAC presents Pentatonix March 6

Vocal sensations and winners of season three of NBC's "The Sing-Off," Pentatonix will bring their unique and infectious style and sound to Luther College's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall Thursday, March 6. Concert doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Pentatonix performs a range of music, from original tracks to intricate re-creations of pop hits, and complex arrangements and medleys.

SAC presents The Ballroom Thieves

Bringing their passion and raw emotion to the stage, the three-piece band, The Ballroom Thieves, will entertain Decorah audiences at 8 p.m. Friday, March 7, in Marty's. The Ballroom Thieves bring a show of rock disguised as folk, and is known for its unique instrumentation and three-part vocal harmonies. Featuring Martin Earley, guitar; Devin Mauch, percussion; and Calin Peters, cello, The Ballroom Thieves debuted their album "The Devil & The Deep" in 2012. Tickets are $5.

Center Stage Series: 'Notes from the Balcony'

The Boston Brass and Enso String Quartet combine in a distinctive and fun performance inspired by Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The "Notes from the Balcony" performance consists of a wide variety of works including three movements from Kabalevsky's "Romeo and Juliet," Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" Concert Suite, Op. 64, Elvis Costello's "Juliet Letters" and Leonard Bernstein's symphonic dances from "West Side Story."

Multimedia specialist: Temporary, two-year, full time position open to assist in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical and other electronic media in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. This position also supports AV events as needed during the weekday, evening and weekend hours. MISCELLANEOUS

The Luther Swim Team will offer swimming lessons for children ages four and up in three sessions this spring. The first session is March 17-21, the second session is March 31-April 4 and the third session is April 7-11. There are three times available for each session, 5, 5:30 or 6 p.m., and the cost is $55 per child per session. Payment is required the first day of lessons for each session.
