2014-15 Paideia presentations
The Paideia Endowment Governing Board invites members of the Luther College community to propose presentations for the 2014-15 text and issues series on the theme "Secrecy and Transparency: Peeking Behind the Curtain." Those interested in participating in the lecture series should submit a tentative title and a brief proposal of 250-500 words by Tuesday, April 22. The online proposal form can be found here.
Student leadership and service award
The Launching Luther Leaders Program invites organizations to nominate an event, service project and/or student leader for the 2013-14 awards program. The top three candidates from each category will be recognized at the awards banquet Sunday, May 4. Nominations are due by noon on April 14. Click here for more information and an application form.
Summer reading
As announced in January, the Paideia 111-112 planning committee has chosen George Orwell's 1984 for the 2014 summer read. Copies of these books are now available in the bookstore for faculty and staff who will not be teaching Paideia 111 in Fall 2014. These limited number copies of the text are made available by the Paideia Endowment Governing Board and the office of the Dean.
2014 Health risk assessment
"Benefit Fusion," the 2014 health risk assessment reporting tool is now active on the website https://www.
Employees may add spouses covered on the Luther health plan by clicking the "My Profile" button that appears on the lower right side of the home page. From there, they may also change the password and make other edits. If both spouses work at Luther, the employee that is primary on the plan will need to register their spouse.

Payroll for April 23
Reminder: time cards are due in the Payroll Office by noon on the Wednesday after the end of a pay period. If you would like to send time cards by campus mail, you must place the time cards in the mail in your building by Tuesday morning in order to meet this deadline. This deadline will be especially important for the pay period ending April 11 due to the Good Friday holiday. Summer 2014 faculty workshop
LIS and the Dean's Office are partnering to offer "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology" for faculty, June 10-13. Participants will consider course-specific information literacy principles as well as departmental and teaching goals as related to technology like multimedia, social media, new media literacies, hardware and software. Cooking class
Johanna Bergan from the Oneota Co-op will discuss and demonstrate options for dairy alternatives in a refined cooking class from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in Valders 379. Those with lactose intolerance, dairy allergies, a vegan diet or just curiosity about dairy alternatives can learn how to maintain a dairy free lifestyle while still enjoying cheese and ice cream. The class will also involve sampling the tasty treats. Sign up here.

BrowZine trial
Those interested in accessing academic journals on an iPad or Android tablet may participate in a BrowZine trial. BrowZine is an application that puts academic journals and articles on tablet devices, making research easier. Contact Ryan Gjerde <gjerdery> with questions and to start your trial. Upcoming Peace Brunch April 13 and 27
Catering invites the campus to come to Peace Brunch from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, April 13 and 27, in Peace Dining Room. Price is $13.50 for adults, $6.50 for children age 5-10 and $10 for Luther students. Call to make reservations, 387-1514.
TIAA-CREF representative seminar
Nancy Foster, TIAA-CREF representative will offer two one-hour seminars: 12:15-1:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 16; 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday, April 17. Both sessions will be held in the Mott room. Attendees will learn how to set up online access and use TIAA-CREF’s online tools, find out their investment style and get a portfolio suggestion, track their retirement path, project the results and get an action plan to help it work even better, discover how to create a more simple picture of their finances and use it to make improvements. Nominations for the Krahn Family Student Service Award are due April 8. Nominees should be sophomore or junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Submit nominations here.
Reminder: Blood draw at Luther
Only a few slots are left for campus blood draws. Register online here. Cost for the general wellness blood draw is $35 and the PSA is an additional $40. The fee will need to be paid at the blood screening, but will get reimbursed through Midwest Group Benefits. Those participating need to fast for 12 hours prior to the blood draw, but may drink water during the fast. Contact Greg <lonningr> for more information.
Reminder: Brown bag sessions
Faculty participants from the summer 2013 LIS information literacy and technology workshop will present their projects and discuss the impacts they have seen in their courses in brown bag sessions held at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 9; and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10. Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture: Sean Burke
Sean Burke will present the Paideia Text and Issues lecture, "Engaging the Ancient 'Other': Identity and Alterity" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The lecture will be followed by a reception in Qualley Lounge; both are open to the public with no charge for admission. The presentation begins with an examination of recent decades and how sexual minorities within Christian communities are seeking out biblical characters with whom to identify. He will also examine how Christians have identified with the character of Jesus and whether they can learn anything from these analyses about how people can relate to "others" in today's world.
Reading by Patrick Hicks
Luther College will host a reading by Patrick Hicks, author of the new novel "The Commandant of Lubizec," at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Room 102 of the Franklin W. Olin Building. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Hicks is the author of five poetry collections, most recently "Finding the Gossamer," "This London" and the forthcoming "Adoptable." His short story collection, "The Collector of Names," is due out in 2015.
Anne Rasmussen presents lecture
Author and professor of ethnomusicology Anne Rasmussen will present the Sihler Lecture on women, music and Qur'anic recitation in Indonesia at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, in Room 102 of the F.W. Olin Building. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Working off the topic of her 2010 book, "Women, the Recited Qur'an, and Islamic Music in Contemporary," Rasmussen will discuss the soundscape of Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, and the contributions of women through their recitations of the Qur'an and performances in Arab-influenced Islamic musical styles and genres.
VPA department senior projects
Senior theatre and dance students will be showcasing their senior projects, "Where Does the Kissing Go? Maiden, Mother, Crone," an original theatre/dance piece, and "Trails of Thread," an original dance piece. 2014 seniors who will be presenting include Holly Fusco, Jaime Giannettino, David Mendez, Anna Murray, Colleen Oster and Cydney Roelandt. Performances will take place April 11-12 at 7:30 p.m. in Storre Theatre.
Woman's Club meeting
Ellen Rockne, writer, artist, singer and co-founder of StoryPeople, explores the impact and importance of story and song in everyday life as she presents the Luther College Woman's Club program "The Stories We Tell and the Songs We Sing." The meeting is at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in Peace Dining Room. All are welcome. Shuttle service from the Decorah Swimming Pool parking lot will be available, with a pick-up time of 1:10 p.m.
Jazz Orchestra homecoming concert
The Luther College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán, will perform their homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at the CFL Main Hall. The performance will be streamed live online at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/lutheradmin.portal#.
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The 2014 Jazz Orchestra tour program includes works by Thelonius Monk, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Gordon Goodwin. Jon Ailabouni is featured on works by Darcy James Argue, Denis DiBlasio and Oliver Nelson.
Luther ensemble performance
The Luther College Varsity Band and the Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, in the CFL Main Hall.
The Varsity Band will perform "A Festival Prelude" by Alfred Reed, "Poetic Intermezzo" by James Barnes, "Cajun Folk Songs" by Frank Ticheli, "Army of the Nile" by Kenneth Alford, "The Peanut Vendor" by Moises Simons and "Psalm 46" by John Zdechik.
The Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform "Satiric Dances" by Norman Dello Joio, "A Dream of Coming Home" by John Carnahan and "Exultate" by Samuel Hazo. The ensemble will also perform "Enchanted Spaces" by Samuel Hazo. This piece was commissioned by Decorah High School and will be guest conducted by Jim Fritz, director of bands at Decorah High School.
Denim Day
Luther College invites the Decorah community to join in participating throughout the month of April in Sexual Assault Awareness Month, an event that raises public awareness of sexual violence and educates communities on its prevention. Luther will host Denim Day Wednesday, April 23, and all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to donate money and wear denim. The money raised will be used to raise awareness about the effects of sexual assault and help end sexual abuse. Read more about Denim Day here. Rich Leake presented as a panelist at the North American Management Society annual meeting in Chicago on March 26.
Andy Hageman presented his talk "When Cogs Narrate Machines" at Art in Interesting Times, the 16th annual Marxist Reading Group meeting at the University of Florida on March 28.
Eric Baack presented "Three generations of selection on crop alleles in wild sunflowers" on March 27 for the Biology Department seminar series at University of Minnesota-Duluth.
David Vasquez met with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., on April 1 to express the support of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for fair and compassionate immigration reform during the Lutheran Immigration Leadership Summit, hosted April 1-2 by the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. Forty two Lutheran and community leaders took part in the two-day summit, engaging in direct conversation with lawmakers and policy makers and discussing the dire need to transform America's broken immigration laws into a welcoming, just and compassionate system.
Elizabeth Steding's article "What Stories Are Being Told? Two Case Studies of (Grand) Narratives from and of the German Democratic Republic in Current Oberstufe Textbooks" will appear in the Spring 2014 issue of the Journal of Educational Media, Memory and Society, published in association with the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research.
Jodi Enos-Berlage, Claire Dembsky '14, and Sam Zook '14, attended the Iowa Water Conference March 3-4 in Ames. Claire and Sam presented a poster titled "Investigating Water Quality in the Dry Run Creek Watershed Over Seasons with Varying Precipitation." Lindsey Bohr '15, Taylor Nelson '15 and Jacob Wittman '12, were also authors.
Jodi Enos-Berlage's invited article "Bacteria in Iowa's Water: Risks, Sources, and Strategies," was published in the 2014 edition of "Getting Into Soil and Water," a publication of the Iowa Water Center in Ames.
Logan Grado '14 and Brad Chamberlain presented their collaborative work at the 247th national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Dallas, Texas from March 17-19. Logan's poster "Titanium and Tantalum Complexes Bearing Optically Active Amidoalkoxides as Catalysts for the Polymerization of D, L-Lactide" was granted the POLYED undergraduate research award from the Division of Polymer Chemistry.
Jeannette Pillsbury co-presented "Developing Academic Language" at the Iowa Association of Colleges of Teacher Education's semi-annual meeting held in Dubuque, April 3-4.
Gokhan Savas presented his paper "Gender and Race Differences in College Enrollment: Evidence from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002" at the Midwest Sociological Society Meeting, April 3-6 in Omaha.
