ANNOUNCEMENTS
April staff meeting
The last staff meeting for the 2013-14 academic year will include reflections by senior students and by President Tiede, a presentation on revenue and expense processing and information on the Early Arrival Policy for students. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room, 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, and 9 a.m. Thursday, April 24. All staff are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.

Faculty Recognition Dinner
Luther's annual Faculty Recognition Dinner is Thursday, May 15, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. reception in Hammarskjold Lounge followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Retirees Diane Scholl and Robert Larson, in absentia, will be honored, along with 25-year honorees Kevin Kraus, Rachel Faldet, and Jessica Paul (who has actually been at Luther 26 years). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased between April 22 and May 9 online with a Luther ID. Tickets can also be purchased at the Box Office by calling, stopping by or emailing <tickets>. We hope for a good turnout to honor these colleagues!
Update to Smoke-Free policy
The Smoke-Free policy has recently been updated to include other smoking devices such as e-cigarettes or vapor cigarettes as prohibited forms of smoking. The entire policy can be viewed here. Those who encounter staff, faculty, students or visitors using such smoking devices on campus may inform them of this policy. Direct any questions to the Human Resources Office, 387-1189.
Update to Early Arrival policy
An update to the Early Arrival policy was recently approved by Cabinet and is available here. The specific criteria to determine approval of an early arrival that will be considered centers on whether the student's presence is essential for New Student Orientation or fall semester opening. It is understood that fall sport athletes will return early for preseason. Review the policy for more detailed information.
Denim Day April 23
Cabinet has approved for Luther employees to wear jeans on Wednesday, April 23. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to donate money and wear denim in support of Denim Day 2014 (suggested donation $5). The money donated will be used to raise awareness about the effects of sexual assault and help end sexual abuse. Read more about Denim Day here.

CSA shares
Employee households are eligible to receive up to $100 towards the purchase of a Community Supported Agriculture share or a Garden Membership in 2014. Signup deadline is May 1. Those who want to sign up may choose to receive a regular box of vegetables (a traditional share, or winter share), select from a farmer's stand at the farmer's market (a market share), or receive assistance with planting and maintaining a vegetable garden (garden membership). Kids environmental education class
Kids K-6 grade may join the Luther environmental education class from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 26, at Baker Commons for a morning of environmental science, exploration, games and more. There is no fee for the class, but preregistration is required. For more information contact Emily, <nealem01> or 387-2138.
Edible landscapes
Based on feedback, plans have been established for the 2014 Valders and Ylvi edible landscapes. This season expect to find cherry tomatoes, ground cherries, eggplant, peppers, basil, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, mini watermelon, kale, chard, beans and common herbs. All are welcome to harvest from these gardens. Be sure to close the gate when leaving to keep out the critters.
Lifeguard Certification class
There will be a lifeguard certification and re-certification class April 25-27 at Luther. The cost will be around $90. Contact Laura <vestla01> for more details.
Peep Diorama results
Thanks to all who created entries and voted in the Book Shop's seventh annual Peep Diorama Contest. The winners of the group entries were the Registrar's Office, first place, and the Career Center, second place. Boiler inspections
Facilities Services will shut down and inspect the boilers at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 27. The steam should be back on by 5 p.m. Monday, June 2. Hot water will not be available in the Union, Farwell, Larsen, Brandt, Regents Center, Ylvisaker, Olin and Valders, and limited in Miller/Dieseth and Sampson Hoffland. Some buildings will be cooler when the boiler is shutdown. Contact Facilities, 387-1146, to report problems.
Faculty computer refresh
LIS will host sessions on the summer 2014 faculty computer roll from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 22; 3-4 p.m. Friday, April 25; and 11 a.m.-noon Tuesday, April 29, in Mott. Faculty members in the following departments are scheduled to receive new computers this summer as part of the four-year replacement cycle and are encouraged to attend: biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, health and physical education, mathematics and physics. Summer reading
As announced in January, the Paideia 111-112 planning committee has chosen George Orwell's 1984 for the 2014 summer read. Copies of these books are now available in the bookstore for faculty and staff who will not be teaching Paideia 111 in Fall 2014. These limited number copies of the text are made available by the Paideia Endowment Governing Board and the office of the dean.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Luther College invites the Decorah community to join in participating throughout the month of April in Sexual Assault Awareness Month, an event that raises public awareness of sexual violence and educates communities on its prevention. Luther will host Denim Day Wednesday, April 23, and all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to donate money and wear denim. The money raised will be used to raise awareness about the effects of sexual assault and help end sexual abuse. Read more about Denim Day here. Party with the Bard
To mark the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, there will be special events during the breaks between class on Wednesday, April 23, on the Bentdahl Commons. At 10:20 a.m., faculty will perform "Hamlet," Act 1, Scene 2; at 12:05 p.m., administrators and students will perform "Midsummer Night's Dream," Act 1, Scene 1 and at 1:20 p.m., students will perform "Much Ado about Nothing," Act 2, Scene 3. All are then invited to bring their favorite Shakespearean insults from the plays for a Shakespeare Smackdown at 2:30 p.m. followed by cake and sonnets at 4 p.m.
Philharmonia performance
Luther College Philharmonia will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in the Center for Faith and Life. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Luther College Philharmonia, a 51-member symphonic ensemble, will perform "Fanfare" from "La Péri" by Paul Dukas, Serenade in D Minor, Op. 44 by Dvořák, and Overture to Coriolan, Op. 62 by Beethoven.
BTQ talent show
The annual BTQ Talent Show, sponsored by Luther College's Diversity Center and the Beta Theta Omega (BTQ), a women's leadership and service group, will feature student talent at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in the CFL Main Hall. The show will feature vocal and instrumental music, dance and poetry. Tickets are $3 in advance at the Box Office or $5 at the door.
Concert Band performance
Luther College Concert Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at the CFL. The performance, part of the Concert Band spring tour, is open to the public with no charge for admission. The concert will also be streamed live at tinyurl.com/Luther-Video-
The 2014 Concert Band tour program includes a wide range of both traditional and contemporary band literature such as Charles Lloyd Barnhouse's 1888 composition "The Battle of Shiloh" and James M. David's "Two Lane Blacktop" from 2013. Luther's Xiao Hu, assistant professor of music, will be featured on Joseph Thalken's "Baby Face Nelson and the Femme Fatale."
Linda Skoda retirement reception
Join us in thanking Linda Skoda for 31 years of dedicated service to Luther College. The community is invited to a "build your own sundae" retirement party from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in Hammarskjold Lounge.
Jazz Band performance
Enjoy a night of jazz with Luther College's Jazz Band at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Jazz Band will be performing "All of Me" and "Come Fly With Me"- classic arrangements from the swing era, as well as music performed by the Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestras.
Cantorei and Ringers performance
The Luther College Cantorei will join the Luther Ringers in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Noble Recital Hall. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Cantori will perform a variety of pieces such as Gabriel Faure's Messe basse pour voix de femmes (low mass for treble voices), including "Kyrie," "Sanctus," "Benedictus" and "Agnus Dei." Madison Norell, '14, will accompany on piano and Emily Ebertz, '14, and Eve Christensen, '14, will have vocal solos during the piece. Karl Nilsson, '15, will collaborate on double bass for "Wanting Memories," and Aidan Schmitt, '16, will serve as percussionist on two pieces.
Luther Ringers will perform a variety of pieces such as Karen Buckwalter's "Carillon Fantasy" and an arrangement of Edvard Grieg's "March of the Dwarfs." Twin sisters Allyson and Kaitlyn Fillmore, juniors, will perform a bell duet "Contemplation" by Monika Durbin.
Norsemen and Aurora concert
Luther College first year vocal ensembles Norsemen and Aurora will present a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, in the CFL Main Hall. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The concert will begin with the collaboration of both choirs and Luther Philharmonia on a movement from the E minor Mass composed by Anton Bruckner.
The Norsemen performance includes pieces by Jonathan Gardner, Alice Parker, Robert Shaw, Connor Koppin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as Jonathan Kobs, Luther first-year student.
Aurora's performance includes pieces by Heinrich Schütz, Pavel Chesnokov, Paul J. Christiansen, Moses Hogan and Frank La Rocca. They will also perform the piece "Eatnemen Vuelie" by Frode Fjellheim, which was recently featured in the hit movie "Frozen."
Campus conversation - Spotlight on Sex and Gender
The WGST program will sponsor a faculty research presentation and conversation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Women and Gender Equality Center in the Gjerset House, located on High Street. This will be the final spotlight of the 2013-14 academic year. Pedro dos Santos will discuss his research on women and politics in Brazil, paying special attention to the historical legacies of the country's patriarchal structures and shining a spotlight on the election of Brazil's first female president in 2010.
'200 years of May 17' lecture
The Knut Gjerset Annual Lecture has been renewed this year in honor of the bicentennial celebration of the Norwegian Constitution. The lecture "200 Years of May 17th" will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in Olin 102.
Senior Send-Off
Luther's Student Senate and the Alumni Office invite all graduating seniors to attend the Senior Send-Off at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the Hotel Winneshiek. Luther vans will provide transportation to and from the Hotel Winneshiek, departing from Union starting at 4:45 p.m. through the evening. Class of 2014 beverage glasses will be given out to all seniors at this event, compliments of the Luther College Alumni Association. The event is open to all seniors with no charge for admission. However, it is requested that students RSVP by Monday, May 12, to be eligible for the Senior Year Series prize drawings. Identification cards are also necessary for admittance.

Position openings
Energy and waste fellow: The energy and waste fellow is a 10-month, .83 FE position starting Aug. 1 and ending May 31 in the Center for Sustainable Communities. The position works with faculty, staff and students to educate the Luther community about the college's energy and waste reduction goals and related initiatives. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people. One to three years of relevant work experience preferred. Experience with marketing and communications and/or web content development desirable. To see full posting and to apply, click here.
Admissions counselor: The admissions counselor is a full-time professional position. Primary responsibilities include coordinating the recruitment of students from a specific geographical region, visiting targeted high schools and attending select college fair programs. Duties include interviewing prospective students on campus and assisting with other admissions related activities and events as assigned. Open house for Tom Coon-NEW DATE, TIME
Tom Coon, Luther class of 1976 and faculty member from 1980-83, will be in Decorah this coming weekend. There will be an open house for Tom starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Reitan's home, 606 Center St. All are welcome to attend.
Decorah World Tai Chi and Qigong Day

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
After a year-long commitment from more than 500 people, the Luther College Dance Marathon raised a total of $38,612.01 to send to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement involving college and high school students at more than 150 schools across the country. Students spend a year raising funds and interacting with children's hospital patients and families.
Gregory Peterson gave a guest recital for the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists on March 17 at Atonement Lutheran Church in Overland Park, Kan.
Evgenia Fotiou presented a paper titled "A World in Crisis and the Promise of Indigenous Religions" at the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness Annual Meeting in Portland, Ore., March 28.
Lauren Kientz Anderson has been awarded the Margaret Storrs Grierson scholar-in-residence fellowship for 2014-2015. It will enable her to spend six weeks in the Smith College archives this summer.
J. R. Christianson spoke on the topic, "Why Do We Celebrate the Syttende Mai?" at the annual Nordic Celebration of Vesterheim in Minneapolis on April 12.
Laura Peterson was awarded a grant totaling $135,235 from the National Science Foundation. The grant funds faculty/student collaborative research through 2016. The project investigates southern hemisphere climate change over the last six million years to better understand key linkages and feedbacks within Earth's climate system.
Lea Lovelace, Claire Baur, '15, Jenna Darsee, '15, and Robin Hengesteg, '15, co-presented, "Empowering Pre-service Elementary Teachers to Develop a Critical Eye in the Era of iPad and Pinterest" at the National Art Education Association conference in San Diego on March 30.
Kim Powell presented, "Understanding Generation C through a VidCon Lens: An Ethnographic Study of the YouTube Community" at the Central States Communication Association Convention, April 6 in Minneapolis.

Sustainability tip of the week
The wood chips used to produce paper mostly come from second and third generation forests, not tree farms like many people believe. Only 16% of paper is made from trees grown to produce paper. To produce the pulp for paper companies generally use a chemical to break down and basically digest the wood. The pulp is then used to produce the paper that we use every day.

Happy Earth Day! This year marks the 44th anniversary of Earth Day, a day intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. The day came from reaction to a massive oil spill in waters near Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1969.
The Earth Day Network is promoting "A Billion Acts of Green," an international movement to protect the planet and secure a sustainable future. Got to the website to find dozens of ways to pledge, act and commit to securing a sustainable future.
