Senior Recognition Convocation

Senior Recognition Convocation starts at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the CFL Main Hall. This celebration honors all members of the Class of 2014 and recognizes students who have earned Latin honors, elected to Phi Beta Kappa or other honor societies, who received post-graduate and departmental awards, and academic all-conference athletes. President David Tiede will give the address, "The Sending Place." The printed program includes titles of senior projects and a class of 2014 group photo will be taken following the service.

Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra performance

The Luther College Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.

Nordic Choir will perform "Haec Dies" by William Byrd; "Der Abend" by Johannes Brahms; "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Gustav Holst, arranged by Abbie Betinis; "I thank You God for most this amazing day" by Eric Whitacre, lyrics from the E.E. Cummings poem with the same title and "Song for Athene" by John Tavener among other works.

The Symphony Orchestra will perform Danźon No. 2 by Arturo Márquez and Russian Easter Overture, Op. 36 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Trash to Treasure sale

Luther will host its annual Trash into Treasure sale in the red barn. T2T re-purposes items that Luther students leave behind during move out. Find a variety of great stuff like men and women’s clothing, jackets, school supplies, furniture, small appliances and more. The sale will be held from 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 23, and 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday, May 26. For more information about this event and sustainability at Luther, click here.

Luther art majors present exhibit

Representing the culmination of dedicated college careers, Luther senior art majors will present a gallery exhibit of their collective work May 6-25 in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery and the Gregerson Gallery in the Center for the Arts. A reception for the student artists will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 24, in the Center for the Arts and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Baccalaureate service

The community is invited to Baccalaureate service at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 24, in the CFL. This ecumenical service celebrates the college's Christian heritage and the spiritual diversity of the community by incorporating readings and prayers from religious traditions of the graduating class. Join in giving thanks for the class of 2014 and send them off with the community's love and prayers. The event will be streamed live at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/lutheradmin.portal.

Commencement ceremony

Luther College will celebrate Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 25, in Carlson Stadium where 527 members of the Luther class of 2014 will receive the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Tickets are required to attend the ceremony. Guests without tickets will find closed-circuit television viewing in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall and Marty's in Dahl Centennial Union. The ceremony will also be streamed live at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/lutheradmin.portal. Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin will give the commencement speech.

COMMUNITY

Position opening

Cashier: The Office for Financial Services has an immediate opening for a full-time cashier. Primary responsibilities include computer receipting of payments for student accounts, college activities and programs as well as answering questions regarding student accounts balances. High school diploma and two-three years of relevant experience required. Applicants with previous knowledge of computerized accounting systems a plus. Previous work in a team-oriented environment is also preferred. Review of applications begins immediately and continues until position is closed. Coordinator of Student Organizations: Ten-month/year temporary position. Primary responsibilities include planning organizational development for student organizations, providing educational and programming leadership for campus organizations, training members and advisors to become proficient with various computer software programs and working with program assessment, data collection and trend analysis. Will assist with Launching Luther Leaders, IGC and the shuttle program. Bachelor's degree, preferably from a liberal arts college, is required; master's in student personnel administration, leadership studies or higher education, preferred. At least one year's experience as part of a student activities program, either as a student or staff, preferably at a private, religiously-affiliated, residential, liberal arts college.

To Kelly Wedmann on the death of her father, Lester Sorenson, 79, of Decorah, who passed away Thursday, May 8, at the Winneshiek Medical Center. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13 at St. Benedict Catholic Church.

Ginger Meyette's article, "Infusing Diversity Content Into the BSW Curriculum: An LGBT Elders Example," has been accepted for publication in volume 19 of "The Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work."

Holly Moore presented her research on Plato's later works in a paper titled "The Paradox of Paradigms: On the Mimetic Grounds of Philosophical Inquiry," at the International Plato Society conference on April 25, at Keio University in Japan.

Andi Beckendorf, Ryan Gjerde and Germano Streese presented "Using Shared Documents for Collaborative Collection Development: Two Practical Examples" on Friday, May 2, at the Iowa Library Association's Association of College and Research Libraries spring conference in Ankeny.

Jim Martin-Schramm participated in an ecumenical meeting on fossil fuel divestment sponsored by Creation Justice Ministries at the United Methodist Building in Washington, D.C., on May 9.

The Iowa Sociological Association hosted its annual meeting at Luther College on Friday, April 25. The ISA is an undergraduate-focused academic association organizing an annual meeting where undergraduates present their research. The association provides a formal yet supportive conference environment for undergraduate students to present their work in sociology and social science-related fields. More than 100 students and faculty from Luther and seven other ISA colleges took part in this event.
