Staff Excellence Award recipients

Luther College staff members Michael Bartels and Karen Dallenbach have been named the recipients of the Luther Staff Excellence Award for 2014. Bartels and Dallenbach were recognized at the annual Staff Appreciation Day on June 4.

The Staff Excellence Award recognizes exemplary performance by staff members who consistently excel in their positions and demonstrate integrity and a strong commitment to the mission and values of Luther.

Copier phone scammers

The Document Center was informed today that two different offices received a phone call asking about the copier in the office. The caller was requesting the brand and model number of the machines in the office. The majority of copiers/printers on campus are covered under a contract with Ricoh to supply the toner, parts and service for your machines. Please do not give out any information about the machine in your office.  Have them call Jeff or Kim in the Document Center at (563) 387-1631 or (563) 387-1013.

Tech support scammers

The LIS Technology Help Desk received notification today of tech support scammers calling campus and local numbers. These phone calls came in as restricted or blocked numbers. LIS wants to warn users to avoid sharing information with such callers.

If called and offered unsolicited tech support help, please do not follow their instructions. The LIS Technology Help Desk will not request passwords, banking information or other confidential information. If contacted about a scam please notify the LIS Technology Help Desk, 387-1000 or help.luther.edu.

Personal day

A reminder to all staff that the Personal Day issued on Sept. 1, 2013 must be used by Aug. 31, 2014 or it will be forfeited. The Personal Day is available on a yearly basis, to be used at the discretion of the employee and their supervisor. The allotted hours (based on full-time/part-time status) must be used in one single block and may not be split for more than one day. Contact Human Resources, 387-1134, or payroll, 387-1135 with questions.

Follow Luther alumnus on the Tour de France

Riding in his first Tour de France, Matthew "Flip" Busche, Luther College class of 2007, is excited for the opportunity and impressed by the start of the 101st "le Tour."

"I'd be lying if I said the reception here in Yorkshire for the 'Grand Depart' wasn't impressive. I've never seen so many people lining the road. The noise has been deafening," Busche said after stage one of the Tour de France.

Lunch on the Lawn to feature LSM students July 9

The Luther community is invited to enjoy the talents of Lutheran Summer Music students as they perform during Lunch on the Lawn in Bentdahl Commons July 9. Rain location is Marty's. Lunch on the Lawn is from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month this summer. Participants can bring a sack lunch and enjoy conversation and a picnic outdoors. Luther College Student Activities Council presents Love and Theft, and Gloriana Sept. 27 

Love and Theft, and Gloriana will take the stage at Luther College Saturday, Sept. 27 in the Regents Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7. Tickets will go on sale to students Thursday, Sept. 4, and to the public Thursday, Sept. 11. Job openings

Administrative assistant for communication studies and visual and performing arts: Ten-month, (.83 FTE) full time administrative assistant for Communication Studies and Visual and Performing Arts. The administrative assistant supports the active programs within the Visual and Performing Arts department, including art, theatre and dance, as well as within the Communication Studies department. Duties include, but are not limited to: managing multiple budget lines, managing student workers, processing accounts payable and obtaining rights/royalties for theatre and dance productions.

Registered Nurse: Nine-month, 40-hour/week, (.75 FTE) benefit-eligible position. Nurses who work in college health must be interested in the total wellness of students. Our nurses promote a positive image of health throughout the campus community and view health promotion as an essential part of their role. Qualified applicants will have graduated from an accredited nursing school and have a current license to practice in Iowa. An associate degree or diploma is acceptable, a bachelor's is preferred. CPR certification is required.

Security officer: Full-time Security Officer to provide for the safety and security of people and property on the Luther campus. A high school diploma or GED is required; some college is preferred. Must have or obtain CPR and AED training. Preferred qualifications include past security, law enforcement and/or customer service experience and training. Prior experience in a college setting or working with college-aged people is desired. Applicants must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record and must pass an extensive background check.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

At the beginning of June, Anna Peterson attended a two-week seminar on teaching the history of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.

Pastor David Vásquez published an article titled "Biblical Fluency: Living under God's Influence" in the June issue of "Currents in Theology and Mission." The volume was dedicated to reflecting upon, learning from, celebrating and furthering the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Book of Faith Initiative.

Loren Toussaint was accepted for participation in the Early Career Reviewer program at the Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health. As an Early Career Reviewer, Loren will serve the NIH by participating in peer review, work with accomplished researchers in psychology and medicine to help NIH identify the most promising grant applications, enhance professional networks and develop grant writing and review skills.  

Loren Toussaint and Gabriel Dorn '15, members of the Luther College Laboratory for the Investigation of Mind, Body, and Spirit, along with colleagues Grant Shields from UC-Davis and George Slavich from UCLA, have published "Forgiveness Buffers the Effects of Lifetime Stress Exposure on Health" in the Journal of Health Psychology. It is the first study to demonstrate that people with forgiving personalities are protected from the damaging effects of lifetime stress on mental health. The study utilizes a state-of-the-art stress assessment that indexes stress from childhood through adulthood and covers virtually all domains of life stress.

A proposal to support recycling efforts on the Luther College campus written by Callie Mabry '14 and Bekah Schulz '14 has resulted in the college being awarded a $1,000 grant from Winneshiek County Solid Waste Agency.
