ANNOUNCEMENTS
Sept. 18-19 staff meeting
Staff meetings begin again this month. September's agenda includes Aaron Steffens, with tips on orienting and supervising student workers, and Jon Jensen, who will share the goals and vision for the Center for Sustainable Communities. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room to allow greater participation at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, and at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. All staff are strongly encouraged to attend.
Respecting chapel time
A reminder to the community that there are to be no meetings scheduled during 10:30-10:50 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Luther is distinctive in its practice of setting aside space for community-wide chapel and the campus is asked to respect this tradition of having "set apart" time for reflection and spiritual nourishment.

Legends/Regents closing early Sept. 20
The Regents Center is hosting a SAC concert on Friday, Sept. 20. The HPE/Pool locker rooms will close at 11:30 a.m. The pool will close at 10:15 a.m. Legends will remain open until 5:45 p.m., but patrons must access the facility through the event entrance doors on the north side of the building as the lower hallways will not be accessible. EZ Air Park
Employees parking vehicles at EZ Air Park in Minneapolis are reminded that the charges for parking should not include tax. The employee should inform the parking attendant when checking out that Luther is tax exempt. EZ Air Park has the tax exemption certificate information on file.

1 in 10 first-year students is participating in SSS
Did you know that 1 in 10 first-year students is participating in Luther's Student Support Services program? Sixty-three of the 632 are benefitting from this federally-funded TRIO program.
SSS serves first-generation college students, students with disabilities, and/or students eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. The program is designed to support students' success through graduation. Services range from tutoring and advising to leadership development and graduate school assistance.

Luther College fleet vehicles
A reminder to all who use Luther College fleet vehicles. Any traffic citations issued by traffic cameras to a Luther College vehicle are the responsibility of the driver listed on the Facilities check out sheet. As with other moving violations if more than three citations are issued in a three year period to a college vehicle driver driving privileges will be suspended for three years from the latest citation.
Mail Center announces new account number
The Mail Center would like to announce a new account number is being used for UPS services on campus. By leveraging Ricoh's combined shipping volumes we are able to provide a discount to the college for shipping.
If your department has its own account number, and you would like to ship with the Mail Center's account, please contact Carolyn, 387-1447. You can continue to use your own account. Any old shipping papers with the previous account number should be destroyed.

'Soup's On!' cooks needed
We are looking for volunteers to prepare a delicious soup for the upcoming "Soup's On!" events, an informal gathering of students, faculty, staff and Decorah community members. Life Line Screening is coming to campus from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Mott/Borlaug room.

Lurth photography on display
Photographs by Aaron Lurth '08, are on display through Oct. 18 in Preus Library. The display includes eight large-format prints from Lurth's most recent body of work, "Parking." Through light, color and scale, Lurth's photographs create odd juxtapositions between unease and comfort, past and future and use and abandonment.

Phyllis Yes art on display through Oct. 13
An art exhibit featuring Luther alumna Phyllis Yes is on display through Oct. 13, in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the Luther College campus. The exhibit, titled "God's Flowers," features six large acrylic paintings on canvas of colorful flower bouquets in a variety of clear glass vases.
Religion Forum with Diane Millis Sept. 17
Forming habits that help people be more present in their surroundings and reclaim the foundational importance of conversation in life are key concepts presented in the Religion Forum featuring Diane Millis.

'Allégresse' trio guest recital Sept. 18
"Allégresse," the French word for joy, fittingly describes the Allégresse trio of flute, oboe and piano taking the stage at Luther at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
The recital will be held in the Noble Recital Hall and is open to the public with no charge for admission. Prior to the performance the ensemble will give a master class for Luther students at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Noble Recital Hall.
SAC Leadership lecture: Kent Stock
Kent Stock, teacher, coach, principal, banker and powerful speaker, will present a SAC Leadership lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Room 206 of Valders Hall of Science.
Stock’s lecture, "How Do You Want To Be Remembered?" will focus on how to live life on a daily basis and how his experience guiding the Norway High School baseball team gave him the insight to develop leaders in organizations nationwide.
Chinese Moon Festival Party Sept. 19
Do you see the moon is getting full? Yes, it is the Moon Festival again! Chinese Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, held on the 15th day of the eighth month in Chinese Lunar calendar, is a popular harvest festival celebrated in China. This year, it falls on Sept. 19. Co-sponsored by MLL and ASAA, a Moon Festival Party will take place from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Farwell Lounge on the eighth floor. With delicious moon cakes and fragrant tea, come have a fun time playing Chinese games and learning about Chinese culture.
Linc Smelser guest recital Sept. 19
Award winning cellist Linc Smelser will perform with Luther faculty and the Luther College Cello Ensemble in an evening of music at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19.
The performance, in the Noble Recital Hall, is open to the public with no charge for admission. The theme of the program is Works for Multiple Cellos.

Public lecture 'Fukushima is not Chernobyl? Don't be so sure'
Sarah D. Phillips, professor of anthropology, Indiana College, will present public lecture "Fukushima is not Chernobyl? Don't be so sure," at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in Olin 102. Philips will also hold a brown-bag lunchtime Q&A session from 12:15-1:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in the Mott Room in Dahl Centennial Union.
Phillips will present a public lecture addressing the issues of nuclear technology in different cultural contexts. She will consider whether “peaceful” nuclear technology is possible, focusing on two nuclear disasters: recent Fukushima and famous Chernobyl. Based on post-disaster ethnographic work in both sites, she will argue that independent of the system-Japanese or Soviet, nuclear technology requires obfuscation in multiple domains-medicine, science, governance-that create heavily scientized discourses and assumptions that assure us nuclear reactors are safe neighbors, while actually disregarding public concerns.
SAC Concerts: Mat Kearney Sept. 20
Nationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Mat Kearney will appear at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in the Regents Center. Sponsored by SAC Concerts, Kearney’s blend of pop and hip hop promises to be an exciting addition to the upcoming Family Weekend. General admission ticket sales begin Thursday, Sept. 12. FAS: Gregory Peterson Sept. 22
Gregory Peterson, Luther College associate professor of music, will perform an organ recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus.
The program includes Praeludium in G Major by Nicolaus Bruhns, Three Chorale Preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach, Passacaglia by G. Winston Cassler, Psalm-Prelude, Op. 32, No. 2 by Herbert Howells and three movements from the Byzantine Sketches by Henri Mulet.

John Ikerd, professor emeritus of agricultural economics at the University of Missouri Columbia, will give a guest lecture about the so-called success of the American food system at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, in Room 206 of Valders Hall of Science on the Luther campus.

Spontaneous dance work
David Marchant, guest dance artist and professor of the practice at Washington University in St. Louis, will create an original dance work with all students who are interested in the concept of "Spontaneous Performance" to premiere at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Studio II. Rehearsals for the performance are 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 23-24 in Studio II. The event is generously supported by Luther's Lecture and Fine Arts and Theatre and Dance Programs.
Dance/science colloquium Sept. 26
David Marchant, guest dance artist and professor of the practice at Washington University in St. Louis, will co-present "Embracing the Fall: Contact Improvisation Dance as Therapy for Parkinson Disease" with Stephanie Fretham, assistant professor of anatomy on how dance and Parkinson's Disease may get along. Alan Lerstrom, Communication Studies professor emeritus, and Isolde Anderson, Hope College, will be publishing "First-Year Students’ Use of Social Network Sites to Reduce the Uncertainty of Anticipatory Socialization" in the upcoming spring volume of the "Journal of The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition."
Laurie Iudin-Nelson was honored for 25 years of service at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minn., at a ceremony in July. Special guest at the event, which also served as a dedication of the new permanent Russian Village site and recognition of major donors, was Yury Y. Melnik, second secretary of the Russian Embassy, on behalf of His Excellency Sergey I. Kislyak, ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States. As part of the ceremony, an endowed scholarship was established in her name. The "Laurie Iudin-Nelson 25th Anniversary Endowed Fund" will grant scholarships for youth to attend the Russian Village.
Carol Gilbertson’s poem “In Memoriam” appears in the current issue of "Magnolia: A Journal of Women’s Socially Engaged Literature" (Vol. 3, 2013). The poem is a response to Agnieszka Piotrovska’s moving BBC documentary about the 1988 Spitak earthquake in Armenia, which killed 25,000 people in just a few minutes and left up to 500,000 people homeless.
Odette Bruneau and Jodi Meyer-Mork presented their work, "iPads and Text Master: Ideas to Increase Use of Technology in Teacher Education Programs," at the 20th International Conference on The Learner in Rhodes, Greece on July 12. Their article under the same title is currently in review for the "Journal of Adult, Community and Professional Learning."
Amy Weldon's essay "Hurling Yourself Against the Beautiful: Faulkner and Creativity" is just out in "William Faulkner: Critical Insights," ed. Kathryn S.Artuso (Salem Press, 2013).
