October staff meetings
The October staff meeting will consist of several updates as well as a presentation on responding to campus emergencies. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. All staff are encouraged to attend one of the sessions.
Admissions 'thank you' reception
Each year Luther College hosts more than 8,500 middle and high school students for camps, clinics, workshops and visit events. The campus visit is consistently rated as one of the most important aspects in the college decision process. It takes all of us to show students and their families what the Luther Community is: warm, welcoming and engaging.

Essay contest open to U.S. college students
The annual Abd el-Kader interfaith leadership essay contest is now underway. It is open to all U.S. college students, with a $1,500 prize going to the winning essay. Final essays are due on March 15. NCUR applications due Nov. 8

Farwell elevator
This is a reminder that the residence halls are on a 24/7 secured system and the halls are locked at all times. Faculty and staff that wish to use the Farwell elevator for parking purposes will need to have their Luther ID card activated to gain access to Farwell Hall since the building will be locked at all times. The process for requesting card access is the same as requests for keys. Requests must be made through department heads using the Luther Facilities work request online program at fixit.luther.edu. Card activation will take two business days to complete.
Grand opening of Ice Cream/Coffee Shop
Dining Services invites the Luther community to the grand opening of the Ice Cream/Coffee Shop at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14. Come and see us reveal the name of the Ice Cream/Coffee Shop and who won the two free airline tickets.

Celebrating 100 years of the Bishop Bang Collection
Founder's Day 2013, Oct. 14, marks the centennial for 5,000 books acquired for the Luther College library from the estate of the Norwegian Bishop Anton Christoph Bang. The collection was considered a first step towards a new library on campus. A display on the Main Floor of Preus Library features books authored and owned by Bang, including theology and church history, literature, history, and an important book of woodcuts depicting travel in the Holy Land.

Off-campus studies fair Oct. 8
From 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8., the Center for Global Learning is hosting an off-campus studies fair in the Union Lobby. There will be opportunities for students and faculty to learn about Luther study abroad and meet with representatives from organizations that offer Luther-approved programs around the world.
SAC Leadership presents: TED Talk
At 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, there will be a TED Talk in the Mott-Borlaug room in the Union. The talk, titled “We the People and the Republic we Must Reclaim” by Lawrence Lessig, focuses on big business influence in politics. John Moeller will be proctoring a thoughtful discussion after the Talk. Refreshments will be provided.
'The "Other" Is Us: The Stigmatization of Mental Illness'
On Oct. 8, Joe Breitenstein, associate professor of psychology, will present "The 'Other' Is Us: The Stigmatization of Mental Illness." This is the first lecture in the 2013-14 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series "Studying the 'Other.'" The lecture is at 7 p.m. in the CRH. The lecture series is sponsored by the Paideia Endowment and is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Subroto Bagchi Lecture Oct. 10
Subroto Bagchi will deliver a keynote address at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall.The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Bagchi is co-founder and chairman of Mindtree Ltd., a global information technology solutions company. Bagchi will spend several days on the Luther campus visiting classes.
India’s No. 1 best-selling business author, Bagchi will complete his visit with a keynote address covering his views on ethical business practices and management styles and his thoughts on successful entrepreneurship.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Economics and Business and funded by the Malcolm and Maybelle Estrem Endowed Program for Entrepreneurial Studies.
Guest Recital: Willful Devices
Combining the sound of a clarinet with electroacoustic sounds created on a computer, Patrick O'Keefe and Scott Miller collaborate to showcase their project titled "Willful Devices," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.
A masterclass will be given by O'Keefe at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Sperati Band Room of Jenson-Noble.

WSMS: 'Bach, Beethoven and Beer' Oct. 11
Water Street Music Series will hold its second event of the season "Bach, Beethoven and Beer" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 in the newly renovated upstairs area of T-Bock’s. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $5 for students. An evening of classical music by two of the greatest composers - Bach and Beethoven - will be hosted by Jim Griesheimer. Luther music faculty Heather Armstrong, oboe; David Judisch, voice; Kathy Reed, harpsichord and Rebecca Shaffer, French horn; collaborate with Luther College students and staff including Katherine Haller, Katie Seidel, Marita May and Sara Pecinovsky to bring a full program of classics to downtown Decorah. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Students under 21 are welcome to attend the event.
FAS: Beth Ray and Edwin Andereck
Luther College's Beth Ray, associate professor of music, and Edwin Andereck, professor of music, will present a joint voice recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Ray, mezzo soprano, and Andereck, tenor, will perform a variety of music by Monteverdi, Massenet, R. Strauss, Handel, Haydn and Mozart.
Balalaika Ensemble concert Oct. 12
The Luther College Balalaika Ensemble, directed by Laurie Iudin-Nelson, will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Children are encouraged to attend.
The concert will include a free-will donation to benefit the Bruce and Amy Wrightsman Memorial Scholarship, which supports study abroad for Russian studies students.

Interfaith holiday celebration
Eid al Adha Reception, 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, in Peace Dining Room. Join the MSAA, IFSA, College Ministries and the Luther Diversity Center for light refreshments and a brief program celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid al Adha. Eid al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, marks the end of the Hajj-the annual pilgrimage to Mecca-and celebrates Abraham's faithfulness and obedience to God. Jews, Christians and Muslims look to Abraham as an example of faith. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

UMACS regional conference held at Luther Nov. 8-9
The Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability is holding its fifth regional conference at Luther Nov. 8-9. Luther faculty, staff and students may attend the conference for no charge. It is a great opportunity to connect with colleagues from other schools and learn more about what is happening in sustainability around the region. With panels and posters ranging from topics in local foods and renewable energy to vermiculture and permaculture there's something for everyone to explore. Luther College honored 10 alumni with the Distinguished Service Award last Friday. The Distinguished Service Award is given in recognition of success and achievements in professional fields, service to society, contributions to community and loyalty and service to Luther. Kim Powell and Ashley Matthys '12 had their study "Effects of Suicide on Siblings: Uncertainty and the Grief Process" published in the October 2013 issue of the Journal of Family Communication. This research was funded by an ICF/McElroy Faculty/Student Research Grant.
Emily Neal and Birgitta Meade, shared a poster presentation at the recent "Innovation in 'Preparing Teachers' in STEM" conference held in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sept. 20.
Ginger Meyette presented at the Sexuality and Aging Consortium Conference at Widener University in Chester, Pa., Sept. 27. Her workshop was titled "Providing LGBTQ-Specific Grief Support in Long-Term Care." The workshop included strategies for providing support to residents, families, and staff for a wide variety of grief issues.
Focus Publishing has just released an edition of "The Winter's Tale" by Mark Z. Muggli in its New Kittredge Shakespeare series. It may be of local interest that Muggli made the unusual decision to include references in the introductory essay and performance notes to the 2010 production of the play by the students of his class "English-Theatre/Dance 261: Shakespeare Performed."

New employees
Online application system implemented
The Office of Human Resources and the Dean's Office have recently implemented an online application system. Going forward applicants will submit their employment materials electronically. This system will reduce the paper and postage currently used to notify applicants of their status with regard to the position for which they have applied. It will also make it easier for hiring managers and hiring committees to share applicant information in a paperless way.
