October staff meetings
The October staff meeting will consist of several updates as well as a presentation on responding to campus emergencies. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. All staff are encouraged to attend one of the sessions.

Music department releases two new CDs
Luther's music department has recently released two new recordings, Nordic Choir's "Go, Lovely Rose," and Jazz Orchestra's "Aquarela."

Essay contest open to U.S. college students
The annual Abd el-Kader interfaith leadership essay contest is now underway. It is open to all U.S. college students, with a $1,500 prize going to the winning essay. Final essays are due on March 15. NCUR applications due Nov. 8
Luther students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2014 National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Want to showcase research at a national conference? Luther will provide support for selected students to present at NCUR.

In honor of American Archives Month, the Luther College Archives is sponsoring a rephotography campaign. Rephotography is when you take an historical photo and you re-create it with a modern spin. Look at how life at Luther has changed over time by viewing the Relive Luther Facebook photo album created by Archives and the Photo Bureau.

Celebrating 100 years of the Bishop Bang Collection
Founder's Day 2013, Oct. 14, marks the centennial for 5,000 books acquired for the Luther College library from the estate of the Norwegian Bishop Anton Christoph Bang. The collection was considered a first step towards a new library on campus. A display on the Main Floor of Preus Library features books authored and owned by Bang, including theology and church history, literature, history, and an important book of woodcuts depicting travel in the Holy Land.
Message from HR
Individuals that participated in the Lifeline Screening held Oct. 10 in the Borlaug Room and are on the Luther health insurance plan may submit a copy of their receipt to Midwest Group Benefits. The $55 will be applied to the deductible/out-of-pocket limits.
Individuals that are on Luther's group Humana/retiree plan may obtain a reimbursement claim form from human resources. The cost will be reimbursed at the out-of-network rate of 70 percent. Please call 387-1134 for the Humana form.
TIAA Retirement Income Options session
Two sessions will be held to provide comprehensive discussion of all retirement income options offered by TIAA-CREF. These sessions will help employees identify which option best suits their needs, based upon their vision of retirement. Both sessions will be held in the Mott room, Dahl Centennial Union 9:45-10:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 and 9-10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1. Please plan to attend. Lunch hour yoga classes
Yoga is one of the best mid-day activities one can do during a workday to keep you energized throughout the day. Staff and faculty are invited to attend a 50-minute class led by Molly Lesmeister on Mondays and Wednesdays for six weeks, Oct. 28-Dec. 11, no class Thanksgiving week, in the CFA Studio II. Mats and props provided. To sign up, email Molly at [email protected] and indicate if you would prefer the 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. class. Class sizes are limited so sign up for a spot only if you can make most of the classes throughout the session.
Grounds
The college lawns on the upper campus will be fertilized and spot treated for broadleaf weeds, especially along sidewalks and curbs, beginning, Friday, Oct. 18. The fertilization process will begin during the day on Friday and spraying will take place after 5 p.m. and continue throughout the weekend, weather permitting. This procedure is in keeping with Luther's turf management policy. For a copy of the policy, contact Gary Brickman, 387-1668.
Green roof being installed
Facilities Services would like to share with all that a new, vegetative, green roof will be placed between Sampson Hoffland and Valders. The work on this roof will begin Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Traveling by airplane?

We gather information related to all faculty, staff and student air travel miles paid for and/or reimbursed by the college. Center Stage Series: Tango Fire
The Argentinian dance company Tango Fire will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets available at the Luther College Ticket Office. A workshop in conjunction with Luther Ballroom/Swing on the basics of Argentine Tango will take place at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Studio II of the Center for the Arts. Learn more about the music of 'Tango Fire'
Michael O'Brien, an ethnomusicologist with more than a decade of experience researching and playing tango music in Argentina, will be offering a pre-performance talk about the history and culture of tango music and dance starting at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Mott Room at Dahl Centennial Union. Then come on over to the CSS Tango Fire performance at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall.
LIS hosts EDUCAUSE online conference Oct. 16-18

Luther College's Karen Kanakis, soprano; Eric Ashcraft, tenor; Jacob Lassetter, baritone, and Jessica Paul, piano, will perform a recital as part of Luther's Faculty Artist Series at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is a celebration of the 200th birthday of the esteemed Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
SAC Spotlight/Diversity: Jared Mahone

Mahone's songs are filled with genuinely thoughtful lyrics and funk. His original style, soulful vocals and unbelievable beat box make him impossible to forget. Producer Jerry DePizzo, Grammy award winning mix engineer, Mike Landolt and Brian Lucey, created his new full-length album.
Art exhibit: Kirsten Malcolm Berry
An art exhibit featuring New Testament calligraphic paintings by Minneapolis artist Kirsten Malcolm Berry will be on display Oct. 25 through Dec. 8 on the second floor of the Center for Faith and Life. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Berry's art is inspired by images from the New Testament. Integrated into each painting is the Bible verse on which the piece is based, written in Greek.
Faculty Artist Series: Luther College Piano Quartet
The Luther College Piano Quartet, an ensemble featuring Joseph Kromholz, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; Eric Kutz, cello; and Miko Kominami, piano, will perform a concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, in the Noble Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Art exhibit: Susan Coleman
Pastels and paintings by Mount Vernon, Iowa, artist Susan Coleman will be on display Oct. 28-Dec. 13 in Preus Library. The exhibit, "Points of Departure in the Landscape," is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Coleman sees her work as a meditation, drawing on her memories, questions, and attempts to settle her ever-shifting perceptions. The artist says her goal is to go beyond the merely scenic aspect of landscape.
UMACS regional conference held at Luther Nov. 8-9
The Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability is holding its fifth regional conference at Luther Nov. 8-9. Luther faculty, staff and students may attend the conference for no charge. It is a great opportunity to connect with colleagues from other schools and learn more about what is happening in sustainability around the region. With panels and posters ranging from topics in local foods and renewable energy to vermiculture and permaculture there's something for everyone to explore. Todd Green gave a presentation at the Danish American Heritage Society Conference in Des Moines, Iowa, Oct. 12. The title of his presentation was "In Search of a Danish Islam: Exploring the Challenges of Muslim Identity and Integration in Contemporary Denmark."
“Hours with Amanda,” a five-minute documentary film featuring Amanda Hamp '01 and produced by Thomas C. Johnson and Michael Crowe ’13, has been chosen as an official selection for the Mt. Hood Independent Film Festival.
Lauren Kientz Anderson presented a paper "Interracialism and Black Political Thought in the Interwar Era," at the New England Historical Association on Oct. 12, held at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn.
Nancy Gates Madsen presented her paper, "The Power of Silence in Sites of Memory in Argentina: Jonathan Perel's El Predio," at the North Central Council of Latin Americanists Conference on Friday, Sept. 27 in Stevens Point, Wis.
Char Kunkel was a panelist for Community Conversations of Rochester Issues Forum, Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Heinz Center which was titled "What have we learned from the George Zimmerman verdict?" and focused what we learned and what this means for our future. The event was organized by Sheila Kiscaden, Olmsted County Commissioner.
Don Jones was a member of a panel presentation at the Marketing Management Association Fall Conference in New Orleans, Sept. 18-20. The panel presentation was titled “Marketing Ethics: Critical Incidents, Role Play and Other Strategies.”
Three mixed-media works created by David Kamm in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Conn. have been selected for a juried national exhibition titled "Is this Freedom?" The exhibition will take place Nov. 6-Dec. 13, at Rogue Community College in Portland, Ore.

The Luther swim team is offering swimming lessons for adults from 12-12:40 p.m. Oct. 21-25 or 7-7:40 p.m. Oct. 21-Nov. 18, Mondays. $50 for five sessions, includes entry fee to pool for sessions.
