Nov. 13-14 staff meetings

87 percent of first-year Student Support Services participants are back
The Student Support Services Program has achieved a first-year student retention rate of 87 percent (47 of 54 students entering last fall are back this fall). SSS serves first-generation college students, students with disabilities, and/or students receiving a Federal Pell Grant. Services range from tutoring and advising to leadership development and graduate school assistance. The program has been in place at Luther for 40 years. Extended study hours now offered in the library
Thanks to the efforts of Campus Safety and Security and LIS, the library's main floor now remains open for general study until 1 a.m. Sunday-Thursday when regular fall and spring term hours are in effect. All Library and Technology Help Desk services will continue to end at midnight, and the lower and upper floors will close at midnight as well, but students who wish to remain on the main floor to study may do so. The extended hour will be monitored by student safety and security staff. Note: This is a pilot project and subject to change. In addition, the Library and Technology Help Desk have lengthened their regular Friday evening hours to 9 p.m. during the fall and spring terms. Part of the credit for these changes goes to Student Senate for advocating for extended hours for approved study space on campus.

LIS is pleased to announce that AirServer is available in select classrooms and meeting spaces on campus. AirServer is an AirPlay receiver for Mac and PC. It allows users to wirelessly mirror your iOS device or Mac through the podium computer in a space (and subsequently on to the projector). Book Shop donates to local thrift shop
On Oct. 31, the Luther College Book Shop celebrated Halloween along with the arrival of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and their famous song, "Thrift Shop." The Book Shop asked the Luther community to bring in a donated clothing item in exchange for $10 off a new Luther hooded sweatshirt. The generous response of the Luther community brought in more than 30 items of clothing. Luther Book Shop student staff Willy Leafblad, senior, and Stephanie Rima, sophomore, hold the box of collected clothing, which was donated to a local thrift shop.
LASO sponsors food drive
Luther Athletes Serving Others is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Food Drive. All donations will go to the food pantry at First Lutheran Church here in Decorah. Here is a link that gives a list of specific items the food shelf needs: http://www.
Food donations can be dropped off through Nov. 19 in a box labeled, "LASO Food Drive" near the circle drive entrance of Regents.
The finale of the food drive will be at the men's basketball team's first home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, vs. UW-La Crosse. Luther students and community members who can't make it to the drop box are invited to bring food donations to the basketball game.

'Women's Clinic in Furnes, Norway' ('Kvinneklinikken, Furnes')
Come listen to a new member of the history department, Anna Peterson, give a talk about her experiences researching the development of maternity legislation in Norway at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Koren 217. Peterson will detail the exciting and frustrating process of combing the archives looking for answers to her most basic research question: how were women involved in the creation of welfare policies in Norway – a country now known for its high levels of gender equality, social cohesion and standards of living?
Gerhard Marks Lecture Nov. 5
Brett Van Hoesen, assistant professor of art history at the University of Nevada-Reno, will give the 2013-14 Gerhard Marcks Lecture, "Visualizing Sound: The German Avant-Garde and the Acoustic Realm," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102.
A reception with Hoesen will follow the lecture; both are open to the public with no charge for admission.

TED Talk Nov. 5
A TED Talk will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the Mott-Borlaug room in the Union. The talk, titled "Listening to Global Voices" by Ethan Zuckerman, focuses on how people (both as individuals and as societies) tend to connect with people similar to themselves instead of those who may be different. Professor Thomas Johnson of the communications department will be proctoring a thoughtful discussion after the talk. Refreshments will be provided.
Teacher Immigration Panel Nov. 6
Hola-Enlances is sponsoring an event planned to bring awareness to the community about the different perspectives about the decisions that will be made in congress in the next few months and also talk about the way that immigrants are currently living at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Valders Hall of Science Room 362. There will be anthropology, political science and Spanish professors talking about how immigration in United States is explained by their fields of study.
Religion Forum with Kim Socha Nov. 7
Join Professor Kim Socha in a discussion on the philosophy of "Animal Liberation: The Failure of Religion, The Promise of Atheism," at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in Room 102 of the Franklin W. Olin Building.
Socha believes religious ideology and institutions have been complicit in the oppressions and exploration of nonhuman animals. Socha teaches English at Normandale Community College in St. Paul, Minn.
SAC Spotlight/Diversity presents Guante Nov. 8
Hip hop artist and two-time National Poetry Slam champion Guante will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in Marty's CyberCafé in the Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther College Campus. Hailed as one of the best rappers in the Twin Cities, Guante's rhymes are not only smart, but socially and politically conscious. 'Hero of the Year' finalist: Chad Pregracke Nov. 8
Chad Pregracke, Living Lands and Waters founder and president, will give the keynote address, "Helping to Clean America's Rivers: From the Bottom Up," at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206. The lecture is part of the Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability conference, "Celebrating Success, Building Community, Taking Action," Nov. 7-9 on the Luther campus.
The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Symphony Orchestra performance Nov. 10
The Luther College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Baldwin, will present a concert at the Center for Faith and Life at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10. The program will feature internationally renowned pianist, Du Huang, as soloist on Edvard Grieg's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A Minor. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther hosts 150th celebration Nov. 10
The Luther College congregation is hosting a shared worship service to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lutheran congregations in Decorah at 10 a.m., Nov. 10, in the Center for Faith and Life.
ELCA churches in Decorah, including Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, First Lutheran Church, Decorah Lutheran Church and Luther College Student Congregation, will worship together with a festival setting of Holy Communion. The Rev. Harold Usgaard, bishop emeritus of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod, will serve as the guest preacher.
Luther will offer shuttle service from the Regents Center parking lot and the parking lot behind Preus Library. Beginning at 9:15 a.m., the Library lot van will pick up riders at the sidewalk near Preus Library; the Regents Center van will pick up riders at the north end of the lot, at the end of the lot away from the Regents Center. The shuttle vans will give rides back to the parking lots following worship.
Paideia Text & Issues Lecture Nov. 12
Kristy Gould, Luther College professor of psychology, will present Luther's fall Paideia Lecture "Research in Animal Cognition as an Example of Studying the 'Other': What It Can Teach Us About Animals and About Ourselves" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall.
Gould's presentation will focus on the boundaries we draw between humans and animals.
Reflections from Luther's Peace Scholars
Come hear what Cate Anderson '14 and Maggie Steinberg '15 learned in Oslo, Norway this past summer as Luther's Peace Scholars. Their presentation will be held from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the Borlaug Room. Feel free to bring in lunch.
'Call Me Crazy' Lifetime movie screening Nov. 13
Luther's Active Minds student group and Counseling Services are sponsoring a screening of the Lifetime movie "Call Me Crazy" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Valders 206.

"Call Me Crazy: A Five Film" brings together an all-star ensemble cast with five interwoven stories about how love, support and hope can help us overcome emotional health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder and PTSD.
Luther Wind and Percussion Ensemble Nov. 13
The Wind and Percussion Ensemble will present a fall concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.
The Wind and Percussion Ensemble will perform works by Tomohiro Tatebe, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Steven Reineke, Alfred Reed and John Philip Sousa. The Wind and Percussion Ensemble is a group of 50 select band students and is conducted by Joan deAlbuquerque.

Guest Lecture: Robert Hogg Nov. 14
Rob Hogg, state senator from Iowa, will present a Luther College guest lecture, "A Call to Climate Action – America's New National Purpose," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in Olin 102. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
CSS: The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Nov. 16
Eight ukulele masters spread a spirit of wit, playfulness and camaraderie as they strum through a diverse repertoire that includes everything from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana to Otis Redding as part of Luther's 2013-14 Center Stage Series. The musicians of The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther College campus.
Bring a ukulele and join in the ukulele-along finale song. The sheet music is available at the Ticket Office or online at http://bit.ly/16ED2F3. Audiences of all ages and musical tastes have loved and been entertained by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.

Richard Cole, emeritus professor of history, presented a paper "Social Policy with a Lutheran Edge in the Seventeenth Century" at the annual meeting of the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Oct. 24-27, 2013. The session, titled "Governance and the Implementation of Reform" was chaired by Robert Bast, University of Tennessee.
Brooke Joyce's solo clarinet work "Eta Geminorum" was recently recorded by Arianna Tieghi and included on the Namaste Ensemble's CD "In Memoriam Dinu Ghezzo." More information is here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/
