Broomball league for staff and students will begin as soon as the ice is strong. Play will be over the noon hour on Mondays and Wednesdays. Play will begin as soon as we have enough teams to begin. Softball clinics in January

SAC Spotlight: Magician Ben Seidman Jan. 16

Currently co-starring in two TV specials on the Travel Channel and named as the first Resident Magician at Mandalay Bay, Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Magician Ben Seidman will perform at Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, in Marty's. Martin Luther King Jr. Day lecture Jan. 19

"Prexy" (Rozell W.) Nesbitt, an educator, activist and lecturer with more than 50 years of experience, will give this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, in the Valders Hall of Science Room 206 on the Luther College campus. His lecture titled, "'Dreams Deferred,' 'Beyond Vietnam,' 'Mary Jane,' and 'The Wall Between': Memorializing Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Women's Club meeting Jan. 20

Luther College Woman's Club meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. The program title for the meeting is "Museum Studies: What's New at Porter House and Vesterheim." Guest speakers are Emily Minear, coordinator at Porter House, and Alison Dwyer, collections manager at Vesterheim. There will also be special music, a brief meeting and social/coffee time. All are welcome! Shuttle service leaves from the swim pool parking lot at 1:10 p.m.

'Dear White People' film screening and discussion Jan. 22

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival's Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, "Dear White People" is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama. Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college. "R" rating is for language, sexual content and drug use. Kenechukwu Okeke '16 will be performing a poem following the movie.

The screening will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan, 22 in Valders 206 with a discussion to follow, lead by guests Julia Schumacher '09 and Erika Merriwether. Cost $2 but free with CAF. SAC Cinema and the Diversity Center are sponsoring this activity.

'Recovery Tour' Jan. 23

The community is invited to "Recovery Tour" with Mike and Sue Blair, at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 in the CFL Recital Hall. Inspired by Sue's journey of complete remission from Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2012-13, "Recovery Tour" will offer stories and songs of faith, laughter and healing that invite reflections on recovery as a universal theme.  Sponsored by College Ministries and open to the public with no charge for admission.

Invitation to Community Day

Faculty and staff are invited to attend Community Day sponsored by Bank of the West on Saturday, Jan. 24. The event schedule is as follows:

• Swimming vs. Coe 1:00 p.m.
• Women's Basketball vs. Loras 2:00 p.m.
• Men's Basketball vs. Loras 4:00 p.m.

A free community picnic will take place from 3:30-5:15 p.m. in the North Gym between basketball games and will consist of hot dogs, chips, water and ice cream. More information and RSVP can be found on the alumni website.

Retirement planning seminar Jan. 28

Diane Tacke will lead a retirement planning seminar from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the Olin Round Table Room. The session is limited to 20 people. In March, Diane will present a planning session for those under age 45.

'Messiah' tickets on sale

Tickets for the Spring 2015 Oratorio are now on sale. Handel's "Messiah" will be performed by student soloists, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. March 27 in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students (18 and under). Tickets are free for all Luther faculty, staff and students, and must be obtained in person at the Ticket Office. Tickets for the Minneapolis performance at Orchestra Hall on Sunday, March 29, are also available.

Charles Smith's sculpture installation on display through Feb. 12

"Inside/Outside: Contemporary Folk Art by Dr. Charles Smith (1940-)" consisting of six sculptures created by the contemporary folk artist is on display through Feb. 12 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Art Gallery in the CFA. Curated by Katie Mathis, Luther College class of 2015, the exhibit is part of Mathis' senior project in art history and is open to the public with no charge for admission.
