COLLEGE OPERATIONS

January staff meetings

Come learn about one of Luther's most popular academic majors. The January staff meeting will feature a presentation by Wendy Stevens on "100 Years of Biology at Luther College." The meeting will be offered at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14 and 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15. Both meeting options take place in Peace Dining Room.

Library J-term hours

Monday-Thursday: 7:30 a.m.-11 p.m.
Friday: 7:30 a.m. -5 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. -5 p.m.
Sunday: Noon-11 p.m.

Broomball league

Broomball league for staff and students will begin as soon as the ice is strong. Play will be over the noon hour on Mondays and Wednesdays. Play will begin as soon as we have enough teams to begin. Email Vicky Jaeger, <jaegervi>, to sign up a team of six. If unable to find a team, let Vicky know, and she will try to find a team for you.

Luther Community Song Circle with Liz Rog during J-term

Community Song Circle will take place each Thursday during J-term at 10-11 a.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. The community is invited to join in singing for the healing of the world and renewal of spirit. Open to all members of the Luther community and all voices are welcome. This is an audition-free zone.

'Soup's On!' cooks needed Jan. 22

We are looking for volunteers to prepare and bring a soup for donation to the upcoming "Soup's On!" event, Thursday, Jan. 22. Cooks are encouraged to stay and enjoy the soup from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Please contact the Diversity Center if interested, <dyerja01>.

Resident Assistant nominations due Jan. 23

Do you know a student with leadership qualities who stands out among their peers? Residence Life is beginning the Resident Assistant selection process for 2015-16 and would appreciate names of caring and responsible students who are engaged in the Luther community. Fall 2014 individual course evaluation reports available

Faculty can access their individual Fall 2014 course evaluation reports on Google Drive. Due to changes Google made to its spreadsheets, LIS needed to use a different approach to processing the data this term. Because of this change we are asking faculty to carefully scrutinize their reports. Departmental course evaluation reports will be available shortly with notification posted on the LIS Blog and KATIE Recent News block.

Music students off campus for semester tour concerts

Student musicians from the following ensembles will miss classes on the following days during second semester for off-campus tour concerts. Rosters for each ensemble, which are regularly updated, can be found by clicking on the links for each ensemble's name.

'Don't Shoot' series: book discussion

The Center for Ethics and Public Life and the Diversity Center are sponsoring book discussions of Colin Gordon's book "Mapping Decline: St. Louis and the Fate of the American City." Discussions will take place at 4 p.m. on Feb. 26, March 5 and 12 in Nansen. Participants are asked to commit to attending all book discussions. Books can be picked up at the Counseling Service, located in the lower level of Larsen Hall. Contact Stu Johnston, <johnstst>, with questions.

LIS Tip of the Week

Don't leave electronic devices in cars during cold weather. Take special care with items with glass screens like iPads and iPhones, which can crack in cold weather. For more information, visit the LIS helpdesk website.

KATIE upgrade complete

All work related to moving KATIE to a new server was completed by LIS staff on Tuesday, Dec. 30. LIS appreciates the patience and understanding of the Luther community as we completed the process, which will lead to greater stability and performance for the KATIE system.

Learn the basics of teaching with Moodle in free, online course

Moodle, the learning management system we brand as KATIE, is offering a free, online course for instructors. Covering the basics of how to teach with Moodle, the course begins Jan. 11 and will last for four weeks. It requires two or three asynchronous hours of work per week. Online alumni magazine is all new

The winter issue of the Luther Alumni Magazine is now available online in a redesigned format that allows for viewing on wide screens, tablets and phones. The new site makes it easy to read and share stories, and the flipbook format is still available. Find obituaries through a menu link or go straight to luther.edu/in-memoriam. The printed issues are in the mail.

J-term chapel invitation: Drawing on the community patterns of J-term, College Ministries invites people into community daily during J-term at 10:30 a.m.

Mondays and Wednesdays will involve music and preaching; Tuesdays gather for Table Talk in Marty's, an informal conversation with the campus pastors; Thursdays gather for community singing with Liz Rog in the CRH; and Fridays walk the Prayer Labyrinth in the CRH.

Softball clinics in January

SAC Spotlight: Magician Ben Seidman Jan. 16

Currently co-starring in two TV specials on the Travel Channel and named as the first Resident Magician at Mandalay Bay, Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Magician Ben Seidman will perform at Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, in Marty's. Martin Luther King Jr. Day lecture Jan. 19

"Prexy" (Rozell W.) Nesbitt, an educator, activist and lecturer with more than 50 years of experience, will give this year's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, in the Valders Hall of Science Room 206 on the Luther College campus. His lecture titled, "'Dreams Deferred,' 'Beyond Vietnam,' 'Mary Jane,' and 'The Wall Between': Memorializing Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Women's Club meeting Jan. 20

Luther College Woman's Club meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. The program title for the meeting is "Museum Studies: What's New at Porter House and Vesterheim." Guest speakers are Emily Minear, coordinator at Porter House, and Alison Dwyer, collections manager at Vesterheim. There will also be special music, a brief meeting and social/coffee time. All are welcome! Shuttle service leaves from the swim pool parking lot at 1:10 p.m.

'Dear White People' film screening and discussion Jan. 22

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival's Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, "Dear White People" is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama. Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college. "R" rating is for language, sexual content and drug use. Kenechukwu Okeke '16 will be performing a poem following the movie.

The screening will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan, 22 in Valders 206 with a discussion to follow, lead by guests Julia Schumacher '09 and Erika Merriwether. Cost $2 but free with CAF. SAC Cinema and the Diversity Center are sponsoring this activity.

'Recovery Tour' Jan. 23

The community is invited to "Recovery Tour" with Mike and Sue Blair, at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 in the CFL Recital Hall. Inspired by Sue's journey of complete remission from Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2012-13, "Recovery Tour" will offer stories and songs of faith, laughter and healing that invite reflections on recovery as a universal theme.  Sponsored by College Ministries and open to the public with no charge for admission.

Invitation to Community Day

Faculty and staff are invited to attend Community Day sponsored by Bank of the West on Saturday, Jan. 24. The event schedule is as follows:

  • Swimming vs. Coe 1:00 p.m.
  • Women's Basketball vs. Loras 2:00 p.m.
  • Men's Basketball vs. Loras 4:00 p.m.

A free community picnic will take place from 3:30-5:15 p.m. in the North Gym between basketball games and will consist of hot dogs, chips, water and ice cream. More information and RSVP can be found on the alumni website.

Retirement planning seminar Jan. 28

Diane Tacke will lead a retirement planning seminar from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the Olin Round Table Room. The session is limited to 20 people. In March, Diane will present a planning session for those under age 45.

'Messiah' tickets on sale

Tickets for the Spring 2015 Oratorio are now on sale. Handel's "Messiah" will be performed by student soloists, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. March 27 in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students (18 and under). Tickets are free for all Luther faculty, staff and students, and must be obtained in person at the Ticket Office. Tickets for the Minneapolis performance at Orchestra Hall on Sunday, March 29, are also available.

Charles Smith's sculpture installation on display through Feb. 12

"Inside/Outside: Contemporary Folk Art by Dr. Charles Smith (1940-)" consisting of six sculptures created by the contemporary folk artist is on display through Feb. 12 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Art Gallery in the CFA. Curated by Katie Mathis, Luther College class of 2015, the exhibit is part of Mathis' senior project in art history and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

New interim pastor

College Ministries welcomes Rev. Judd Larson as part-time interim pastor for J-term and Spring Semester. Rev. Larson '74, served congregations in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota before retiring to Decorah. Pastor Larson's office is in the upstairs College Ministries office, CFL 206. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Deanna Casterton wrote the article, "April Fools' Is No Joke Between Iowa Rivals," for The Campus Marketplace e-newsletter, a publication that is sent to more than 6,400 bookstore professionals from more than 3,000 stores nationwide. The article was the top story of 2014 for the publication. The article detailed the Luther/Wartburg April Fools Book Shop display, where both stores displayed the other school's merchandise. Diane Scholl's poem "Watch Night, 1862" appears in the current issue of Cider Press Review online.  The poem describes the night before the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation, marked in African-American churches by a long night of waiting, prayer and song.

Jim Martin-Schramm presented "Climate Justice and Protestant Energy Ethics" as part of a three-person panel addressing the topic, "What Powers Us? Interdisciplinary and Comparative Religious Moral Foundations and Methods for Twenty-First Century Energy Ethics" at the annual meeting of the Society of Christian Ethics in Chicago on Jan. 9.

Todd Green's blog post "Why study Islam in Europe?" from Luther's "Ideas and Creations" blog was published by the Des Moines Register.
