COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Luther faculty and staff Pilates classes

Pilates focuses on building strength from the inside out. Benefits include improved: flexibility, circulation, posture and abdominal strength. Classes are held in the CFA Room 121, Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Feb. 4-March 11. The six-week session is $24 payable at the first class. Attend at least four of the six classes and receive a $25 Luther gift card. Equipment is provided. No appointment or experience necessary. Contact Bridgette with questions.

Book Shop Valentine's Day special

GoPrint pop-up removal

The GoPrint Pop-Up has been removed from all faculty and staff workstations and has been replaced by a shortcut to print.luther.edu (on the taskbar for Windows or Dock for Macs). Users will be notified via a pop-up message when the process begins and ends, generally less than a minute. For more details, see GoPrint Pop-Up Removal or contact the Help Desk at 387-1000 or <helpdesk>.

Admissions student ambassadors

Admissions is in the process of hiring next year's student ambassadors. These students will serve as office assistants and tour guides. Admissions is asking faculty and staff to suggest students who would do a great job of representing their Luther experience to prospective students. Encourage them to come to Admissions 204D for more information and an application. Must be next year's sophomores, juniors or seniors. Application deadline is noon, Friday, Feb. 27.

Luther magazine seeks nominations for senior profiles

The fall issue of the Luther Alumni Magazine annually features profiles of several outstanding graduating seniors as part of its commencement coverage. The magazine staff asks for help in pulling together a list of seniors for consideration this year. Please email <magazine> the names of students to be considered. Also include information about each student (major, what sets the student apart, any extracurricular activities or projects that you know of, etc.).

Vice President for Finance and Administration search

Vice President Diane Tacke will retire at the end of this academic year after nearly two decades of distinguished service to the college. The search for her successor will begin this month. President Carlson has appointed the following faculty and staff to the search advisory committee: Jeff Wilkerson--who will serve as secretary, Ramona Nelson, Jon Jensen, Jon Lund, Arleen Orvis, and Tabita Green. Schall Executive Search, of Minneapolis, will assist with the search.

Board of Regents winter meeting

The Regents will hold their biennial workshop in Minneapolis Feb. 20-22.  To view the Winter Report to the Board of Regents, search for "Regents" in the "search courses" box in the upper-right corner of any KATIE page. If prompted to enroll, accept.

J-term 2015  individual and departmental course evaluation reports available

Faculty can access their individual J-term 2015 course evaluation reports on Google Drive. Dean’s Office staff and department heads can also access the departmental course evaluation reports. For a reminder on how to find either report, please see this announcement on the LIS blog.

Facilities reminder

A reminder to those who that use college fleet vehicles. Please remove all trash from any college vehicle that is used. Facilities Services will issue fines to departments if trash is left in the vehicle after use.

Luther students display street photography Feb. 8-19

"Humans Being," an exhibit featuring the street photography of 14 Luther students, is on display through Feb. 19 in the Dahl Centennial Union Gallery. The photographs on display are selected from the images the students shot over the course of their January Term class "Art 290: Picturing Change—Street Photography in Hong Kong and Shanghai."

Nordic Choir to perform homecoming concert Feb. 10

Nordic Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Center for Faith and Life as a culmination of the choir's 2015 Midwest tour. The performance will be available to view live online at http://stream.luther.edu, and includes pieces by William Byrd, Bach, Eric Whitacre and Frank Martin, as well as hymn-arrangements, spirituals and the traditional Nordic Choir closing piece "O Lord God" by Pavel Chesnokov.

12th annual Black History Symposium Feb. 11-12

Luther will host the 12th annual Black History Symposium Feb. 11-12 on the Luther campus. The symposium, titled "Africans and African-Americans: It's Complicated," will feature a number of events focused on exploring the fascinating and often contentious relationship among various groups of African-descended people in the United States. The symposium begins with a special screening of the documentary "Bound" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Valders Room 206.

Phi Beta Kappa lecture, brown bag session Feb. 12

Kathleen McGarry will present the spring Luther College Phi Beta Kappa lecture, "Intergenerational Transfers from Parents to Children," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb.12, in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102 on the Luther College campus. She will also present "50 Years of the War on Poverty: What it has Meant for the Elderly," at a brown bag session at noon Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Mott Room of Dahl Centennial Union. 

Guest recital Liz Pearse, soprano; Karl Larson, piano

Guest recitalists Liz Pearse and Karl Larson will present a voice and piano concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Noble Recital Hall. Pearse and Larson will perform Olivier Messiaen's "Harawi," a 12-song cycle based around themes of love and death. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Vagina Monologues Feb. 13-15

To raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls, 23 Luther students will present three benefit performances of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" Feb. 13-15. The performances include heartwarming, funny, poignant and at times heartbreaking stories of women across the globe.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall on the Luther campus.

Tickets to the performances are $5 and are available at the Luther College Box Office. Tickets will also be sold at the door if available. Seating is on a first-come fist-served basis.

FAS: Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, horn, Feb. 14

Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a horn recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Boehm Shaffer's program includes the works of Verne Reynolds, Olivier Messiaen, Daniel Schnyder and Richard Strauss  

FAS: Luther College Unison Piano Duo Feb. 14 

The Unison Piano Duo, featuring husband and wife team Du Huang and Xiao Hu, will present a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Gospel Sunday worship service and march

Luther College Ministries will host its annual Gospel Sunday worship service Sunday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. in Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

The college extends an invitation to the community to attend the service at the March for Justice before the worship service. The community will gather at 9:30 a.m. in Luther's Center for the Arts to sing, reflect and pray for racial justice.

FAS: Gary Moss, baritone, Feb. 15

Gary Moss will perform a baritone recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital, titled "In Times of War," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

"In Times of War" features works by Frank Wildhorn, Alexander Zemlinsky, Arthur Somervell, Gene Scheer and Tom Lehrer. Each set represents perspectives from a specific time period or war, giving voice to periods such as the American Civil War, World War I, World War II and the Cold War.

Jessica Paul will collaborate on the performance on piano.

Faculty Artist Series: 'Music in the Shape of a Pear'

Luther College's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" event features works by Luther's composer-in-residence, Brooke Joyce, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and features solo, chamber and orchestral music composed by Joyce for his Luther colleagues.

FAS: Peter Lingen, guitar, Feb. 15

Peter Lingen will present a guitar recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The program features music from Brazil, Cuba, Paraguay and the United States, including pieces from composers Deltanti, Assad and Brouwer.

'Order X Chaos' by Bradley Coulter and Vinicius Lima on display

"Order X Chaos" by design artists Bradley Coulter and Vinicius Lima will be on display Feb. 16-March 13, in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the Luther College campus. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission. 

Malta Presentation at Luther College Woman's Club

"Luther in Malta" an update from the 2014 semester will be given by co-directors Rachel Sandhorst, and Jon Jensen and their daughters Sylvia and Lily.  All are welcome at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Peace Dining Room. There will be music, refreshments and a shuttle service from the swimming pool parking lot at 1:10 p.m.  For more details contact Dale <nimrodda>.

POSTPONED: 'Invisible Geographies': Luther's Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley present lecture Feb. 17

Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley will present the Paideia Texts and Issues lecture "Invisible Geographies: Violence and Oppression in the Prison Industrial Complex and Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. A reception, held in Qualley Lounge, will follow the lecture. Both the lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther to host the winter meeting of the Seven Rivers Chapter of the Fulbright Association

Having a study abroad experience as a student can be life-changing. Steve Holland, Luther College associate professor of economics, will discuss how immersion in a foreign culture can be equally impactful as an adult in his lecture "A Fulbright Year in Montenegro" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in Luther's Shirley Baker Commons.  The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. 

Balalaika to perform concert Feb. 22

The Luther College Balalaika Ensemble will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Shirley Baker Commons. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The ensemble will perform classic Russian and Ukrainian folk songs and Romany songs "Kalinka," "The Ural Mountain Ash Tree," "Dark Eyes," "Two Guitars," "Fellows, Unharness Your Horses," the Jewish favorite "Tum Balalaika" and beloved Soviet tunes "Moscow Nights" and "Katiusha."  

Don't Shoot Series book discussion

The Center for Ethics and Public Life and the Diversity Center are sponsoring book discussions of Colin Gordon's book "Mapping Decline: St. Louis and the Fate of the American City." Discussion will be at 4 p.m. on Feb. 26, March 5 and March 12 in Nansen. Participants are asked to commit to attending all book discussions. Faculty Artist Series: Woodwind faculty Feb. 28

Luther's woodwind faculty will present a recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program, open to the public with no charge for admission, features Luther faculty members Carol Hester, flute and alto flute; Heather Armstrong, oboe and English horn; Michael Chesher, clarinet and bass clarinet; and Helen James, bassoon.
