Luther students display street photography Feb. 8-19

"Humans Being," an exhibit featuring the street photography of 14 Luther students, is on display through Feb. 19 in the Dahl Centennial Union Gallery. The photographs on display are selected from the images the students shot over the course of their January Term class "Art 290: Picturing Change—Street Photography in Hong Kong and Shanghai."

Nordic Choir to perform homecoming concert Feb. 10

Nordic Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Center for Faith and Life as a culmination of the choir's 2015 Midwest tour. The performance will be available to view live online at http://stream.luther.edu, and includes pieces by William Byrd, Bach, Eric Whitacre and Frank Martin, as well as hymn-arrangements, spirituals and the traditional Nordic Choir closing piece "O Lord God" by Pavel Chesnokov.

12th annual Black History Symposium Feb. 11-12

Luther will host the 12th annual Black History Symposium Feb. 11-12 on the Luther campus. The symposium, titled "Africans and African-Americans: It's Complicated," will feature a number of events focused on exploring the fascinating and often contentious relationship among various groups of African-descended people in the United States. The symposium begins with a special screening of the documentary "Bound" at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Valders Room 206.

Phi Beta Kappa lecture, brown bag session Feb. 12

Kathleen McGarry will present the spring Luther College Phi Beta Kappa lecture, "Intergenerational Transfers from Parents to Children," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb.12, in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102 on the Luther College campus. She will also present "50 Years of the War on Poverty: What it has Meant for the Elderly," at a brown bag session at noon Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Mott Room of Dahl Centennial Union. 

Guest recital Liz Pearse, soprano; Karl Larson, piano

Guest recitalists Liz Pearse and Karl Larson will present a voice and piano concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Noble Recital Hall. Pearse and Larson will perform Olivier Messiaen's "Harawi," a 12-song cycle based around themes of love and death. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Vagina Monologues Feb. 13-15

To raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls, 23 Luther students will present three benefit performances of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" Feb. 13-15. The performances include heartwarming, funny, poignant and at times heartbreaking stories of women across the globe.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall on the Luther campus.

Tickets to the performances are $5 and are available at the Luther College Box Office. Tickets will also be sold at the door if available. Seating is on a first-come fist-served basis.

FAS: Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, horn, Feb. 14

Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a horn recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Boehm Shaffer's program includes the works of Verne Reynolds, Olivier Messiaen, Daniel Schnyder and Richard Strauss  

FAS: Luther College Unison Piano Duo Feb. 14 

The Unison Piano Duo, featuring husband and wife team Du Huang and Xiao Hu, will present a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Gospel Sunday worship service and march

Luther College Ministries will host its annual Gospel Sunday worship service Sunday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. in Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

The college extends an invitation to the community to attend the service at the March for Justice before the worship service. The community will gather at 9:30 a.m. in Luther's Center for the Arts to sing, reflect and pray for racial justice.

FAS: Gary Moss, baritone, Feb. 15

Gary Moss will perform a baritone recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital, titled "In Times of War," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

"In Times of War" features works by Frank Wildhorn, Alexander Zemlinsky, Arthur Somervell, Gene Scheer and Tom Lehrer. Each set represents perspectives from a specific time period or war, giving voice to periods such as the American Civil War, World War I, World War II and the Cold War.

Jessica Paul will collaborate on the performance on piano.

Faculty Artist Series: 'Music in the Shape of a Pear'

Luther College's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" event features works by Luther's composer-in-residence, Brooke Joyce, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and features solo, chamber and orchestral music composed by Joyce for his Luther colleagues.
