COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Luther named top Fulbright producer
Luther College has been named among the top schools in the United States for number of students granted a Fulbright award. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recently announced the U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2014-15 Fulbright U.S. students and the list was highlighted in the "The Chronicle of Higher Education." The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program.
February staff meetings
This month's staff meeting will include a presentation about benefits from Diane Tacke and updates from President Carlson, Diane Tacke, and Corey Landstrom. In March the other four vice presidents will share updates. The meeting will be held twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m, Wednesday, Feb. 25. and 9 a.m Thursday, Feb. 26. All staff are strongly encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.
Blood pressure checks
Health Services/Wellness will be sponsoring blood pressure checks from 10 a.m.- 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 in the Dahl Centennial Union. No appointment necessary.
Staff Excellence Award
Staff and faculty are invited to nominate an administrative or support staff person for the Staff Excellence Awards. Nominations are due April 10 to the Office of Human Resources. Luther magazine seeks nominations for senior profiles
The fall issue of the Luther Alumni Magazine annually features profiles of several outstanding graduating seniors as part of its commencement coverage. The magazine staff asks for help in pulling together a list of seniors for consideration this year. Please email <magazine> the names of students to be considered. Also include information about each student (major, what sets the student apart, any extracurricular activities or projects that you know of, etc.).
Vice president for finance and administration search
Vice President Diane Tacke will retire at the end of this academic year after nearly two decades of distinguished service to the college. The search for her successor begins this month. President Carlson has appointed the following faculty and staff to the search advisory committee: Jeff Wilkerson--who will serve as secretary, Ramona Nelson, Jon Jensen, Jon Lund, Arleen Orvis and Tabita Green. Schall Executive Search of Minneapolis will assist with the search.
Board of Regents winter meeting
The Regents will hold their biennial workshop in Minneapolis Feb. 20-22. To view the Winter Report to the Board of Regents, search for "Regents" in the "search courses" box in the upper-right corner of any KATIE page. If prompted to enroll, accept.
J-term 2015 individual and departmental course evaluation reports available
Faculty can access their individual J-term 2015 course evaluation reports on Google Drive. Deans Office staff and department heads can also access the departmental course evaluation reports. For a reminder on how to find either report, please see this announcement on the LIS blog.
Facilities reminder
A reminder to those who that use college fleet vehicles. Please remove all trash from any college vehicle that is used. Facilities Services will issue fines to departments if trash is left in the vehicle after use.

The community is welcome to an ecumenical Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the CFL Main Hall, hosted by Luther and St. Ben's Parish. Begin the Lenten season with the imposition of ashes and sharing of Holy Communion. An offering will be collected to support the Ebola Outbreak Response through Lutheran Disaster Response and to Pathway to Citizenship through the NE Iowa Peace and Justice Center.
College ministries will offer an "ashes to go" station at the Luther/Wartburg basketball games in the Regents Center racquetball court area from 8:30 p.m. through halftime of the Men's basketball game Wednesday, Feb. 18. This will follow the community Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. in the CFL that night.
Luther students display street photography through Feb. 19
"Humans Being," an exhibit featuring the street photography of 14 Luther students, is on display through Feb. 19 in the Dahl Centennial Union Gallery. The photographs on display are selected from the images the students shot over the course of their January Term class "Art 290: Picturing Change—Street Photography in Hong Kong and Shanghai."
'Order X Chaos' by Bradley Coulter and Vinicius Lima on display
"Order X Chaos" by design artists Bradley Coulter and Vinicius Lima will be on display through March 13, in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission. A gallery reception for Bradley Coulter and Vinicius Lima's "Order X Chaos" will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery.

Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley's Paideia Texts and Issues lecture "Invisible Geographies: Violence and Oppression in the Prison Industrial Complex and Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations" has been postponed. New date and time TBA.
Biology Colloquium: 'Garden Hackers, Rogue Biologists, and Agricultural Anarchists'
Tim Johnson, Seed Savers seed bank manager, will discuss the biology of seeds, seed storage, a brief history of agriculture and the cultural practice of seed saving as the first step toward agriculture in the lecture "Garden Hackers, Rogue Biologists, and Agricultural Anarchists: The Biology and Culture of Seed Saving" at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206 on the Luther College campus.
Reducing deforestation in Brazil's soy and cattle sectors
Lisa Rausch, lead post-doctoral researcher on a project studying deforestation in Brazil, will present a guest lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Valders Hall of Science Room 206. Rausch will discuss how to reduce deforestation in the soy and cattle sectors of Brazil. She will discuss the dynamics of those sectors and the evolution of innovative, multi-stakeholder policies that have reduced the soy and cattle sectors as drivers of deforestation.
Faculty Artist Series: Luther's Miko Kominami to perform piano recital Feb. 19
Miko Kominami, Luther adjunct faculty in music, will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital, titled, "Pictures and Music," is open to the public with no charge for admission and will feature works by composers Jerry Owen and Modest Mussorgsky.
Center Stage Series: Hot Sardines Feb. 20
Called "one of the best jazz bands in NY today," by Forbes magazine, the Hot Sardines take the stage as part of Luther's Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in the CFL Main Hall on the Luther campus.
Following the concert, the six-member ensemble will head to The Cellar in downtown Decorah, 421 West Water Street. The event includes a cash bar and is open to anyone wishing to celebrate the jazz age.
'Forgiveness Lunch', an evening of original dance by Blake Nellis

Find out at Forgiveness Lunch, an evening of original dance conceived and choreographed by Blake Nellis. Luther to host the winter meeting of the Seven Rivers Chapter of the Fulbright Association
Having a study abroad experience as a student can be life-changing. Steve Holland, will discuss how immersion in a foreign culture can be equally impactful as an adult in his lecture "A Fulbright Year in Montenegro" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, in Luther's Shirley Baker Commons. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Balalaika to perform concert Feb. 22
The Luther College Balalaika Ensemble will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Shirley Baker Commons. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The ensemble will perform classic Russian and Ukrainian folk songs and Romany songs "Kalinka," "The Ural Mountain Ash Tree," "Dark Eyes," "Two Guitars," "Fellows, Unharness Your Horses," the Jewish favorite "Tum Balalaika" and beloved Soviet tunes "Moscow Nights" and "Katiusha."
Luther to host the 67th annual Dorian Band Festival
Luther College will host the 67th annual Dorian Band Festival Feb. 22-23. High school band students nominated by their high school directors come to stay on campus for the chance to experience Luther rehearse with music faculty and perform in concert. The first festival concert, featuring Luther's Concert Band, Faculty Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra, begins at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, followed by the Dorian Band Festival Grand Concert at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23.
Luther to host pianist Heidi Brende Leathwood
Heidi Brende Leathwood, guest pianist, will present a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the CFL. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Brende Leathwood will perform Sonata in A Major, Sonata in G Major and Sonata in D Minor by Domenico Scarlatti, Sonata Op. 31 No. 1 and Sonata Op. 109 by Beethoven, and Piano Sonata No. 1 by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.
'Drill, Baby, Drill' lecture Feb. 25
Taylor Brorby has a unique perspective on the fracking industry in North Dakota.He has studied how it has created boom towns and boom industries, and all of the unique and unforeseen challenges that follow.There is no other place in contemporary America where one can witness this process at the rate and intensity as it has occurred in North Dakota.
Brorby, writer, environmentalist and GLBT rights activist, will give the lecture "Drill, Baby, Drill: The North Dakota Oil Boom and Iowa's Future" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Valders 206.
The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'The Lightning Thief' Feb. 26
Percy Jackson finds his normal world flipped upside down when mythological figures seem to walk straight out of his Greek mythology textbook and into his life. Luther College's School Performance Series presents TheatreWorks USA's stage adaptation of Rick Riordan's, "Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief," in the CFL at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. Don't Shoot Series book discussion
The Center for Ethics and Public Life and the Diversity Center are sponsoring book discussions of Colin Gordon's book "Mapping Decline: St. Louis and the Fate of the American City." Discussion will be at 4 p.m. on Feb. 26, March 5 and March 12 in Nansen. Participants are asked to commit to attending all book discussions. Job openings
Supervisor of campus visits: Full-time supervisor of campus visits, responsible for the overall operation of the Admissions Visit Center. Duties include: responding to all email and phone correspondence regarding information requests for arranging campus visits and coordinating all aspects of the campus visit. Position may require some early morning and late night hours and some Saturday work. Successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong organizational and analytical skills; proven ability to plan, organize and follow through with complex tasks; and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, desktop publishing, the Internet and an internal database. A bachelors degree and experience in admissions, event planning or a related field preferred. A high school diploma and some post-secondary education required.
Area coordinator: The area coordinator is a professional, 10-month, live-in position responsible for supporting the mission of the college by developing a community conducive to student learning and academic success. The area coordinator works with two residence halls and has direct supervision of 15 resident assistants. Duties include: supervision of resident assistants; liaison with administration, faculty and staff; development of programming in the halls; active participation in a duty rotation; and participation in the disciplinary process. The area coordinator actively participates in staff recruitment, selection and training activities, management of residence hall facilities and occupancy issues, and campus emergency response duty. Evening and weekend work is required. Compensation includes housing, food plan and benefits package. Masters degree is preferred, bachelors degree required. Applications will be accepted until position is filled. Position begins Aug. 1.

Brad Chamberlain, along with Katherine Aubrecht of Stony Brook University, published a white paper on sustainable polymers titled "Report from the Royal Society of Chemistry/American Chemical Society Workshop on Sustainable Polymers (May 2013)." Commissioned and published by the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society, the report is intended to shape and encourage academic, governmental and industrial initiatives pertaining to sustainable polymer technologies.
Odette Bruneau presented a paper, "One-to-one technology: Boon or bust?" at the 13th annual Hawaii Conference on Education in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Jan. 5.
Amy Weldon published a flash-fiction story "Misfit" in the journal Thumbnail (issue 6).
Music Faculty Members Spencer Martin, Andrew Whitfield and Kathryn Reed recently performed an all-Baroque program at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and at the Baroque Room in St. Paul. The program featured works from Italy and Germany including works by Fontana, Uccellini, Corelli, Handel, Telemann and Bach.
Spencer Martin performed a program of Baroque concerti with members of the Flying Forms Baroque Ensemble in St. Paul, and was featured as soloist in the Torelli: Concerto for Three Violins.
Luther students Deveny Miles '17, and Travis Nietert '15, participated in an internship with Luther alumna Sarah Frydenlund, owner and artist of Dry Run Studio in Decorah. Together they explored "Bridge," a project designed by Frydenlund that aims to create conversations in the Decorah and Luther College communities through works of art and actions.
