Dance Marathon silent auction for the kids March 3

Dance Marathon will be holding a silent auction in order to raise money for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. All the money raised from this event will be used to provide financial support for children undergoing treatment there. Up for auction will be artistic creations provided by students and gift baskets provided by local businesses. The auction will be held in the Union from 9:30-11 a.m., Tuesday, March 3. Paideia Text and Issues lecture featuring Nancy Simpson-Younger

Nancy Simpson-Younger, Luther visiting assistant professor of English, will present the lecture "Watching the (Secret) Sleeper in Early Modern Drama," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in the CFL. Her lecture, the last in the Paideia Text and Issues "Secrecy and Transparency" series, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Seed Selection: Choosing the right seeds

Ambassador, Peace Corps rep talk about careers in diplomatic service

A foreign service veteran and a Peace Corps representative will share their experiences working internationally in a talk at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102.

Ian Kelly, Midwest Diplomat-in-Residence with the U.S. Department of State, and Kera Halvorson, Peace Corps recruiter, will discuss international opportunities and internships, as well as their career paths and experiences.

The lecture, sponsored by Luther's Career Center, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Center Stage Series: Hugh Masekela and Vusi Mahlasela

Celebrating 20 years since the end of Apartheid, South African musical icons Hugh Masekela and Vusi Mahlasela will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the CFL. Masekela and Mahlasela pay homage to their home country's 20 years of democracy in "20 Years of Freedom: featuring South Africa's Freedom Songs."

Thomas C. Johnson's 'IRONHEAD' premiere

"IRONHEAD" (2015), a nine-minute documentary film, premieres at 5:45 p.m. Friday, March 6, in Olin 102 as part of the Oneota Film Festival. The film is produced by Thomas C. Johnson and Neal Abbott '15, with color by Aaron Lurth '08, and music by Brooke Joyce. "IRONHEAD" documents the creative artistry of Kelly Ludeking, ironmonger, sculptor and teacher. Ludeking is the founder of the Down on the Farm Iron Pour, a collaborative gathering of local, regional and international artists, held annually at his family farm near Decorah.

Luther production tells story through dance and science

Performances of the interdisciplinary "Body of Water" dance will be 9:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5; 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 6; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Jewel Theatre, Center for the Arts.

'Shelved' Food-based works by Matthew Drissell on display

"Shelved," an exhibit of food-based paintings created by Matthew Drissell, will be on display March 6-April 18 in the CFL Gallery. Much of Drissell's work lately considers the nature of agriculture and sustainability. Drissell constructed the paintings in "Shelved" using processed treats, melted onto the canvas and fused together with industrial chemicals. These works are meant to both attract and revolt audiences, and explore the legacy of the industrial food system.

Ethnic Arts Festival and Oneota Film Festival

Luther continues to celebrate the cultures of the world by hosting the Ethnic Arts Festival in conjunction with the 2015 Oneota Film Festival. The Ethnic Arts Festival, begins at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 7, and will have several events throughout the day.

The Oneota Film Festival will take place the same weekend as the Ethnic Arts Festival, beginning at 4:15 p.m. Friday, March 6; and continuing through Sunday, March 8.

2015 Concerto Competition finals

Luther's 2015 Concerto Competition finals will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, in the Noble Recital Hall. Concerto Competition finalists are selected from preliminary auditions held March 3. All finalists will compete in a final round of competition on March 6 and immediately following, the winner(s) will be announced. The winner(s) will appear with the Luther Symphony Orchestra or Chamber Orchestra in public performance; date(s) to be announced.

Faculty Artist Series: Andrew Whitfield, voice

Andrew Whitfield will present a faculty recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. The recital will feature the works of George Frideric Handel, Vincenzo Bellini, Richard Strauss, Simon Sargon, and Brooke Joyce, Luther's composer-in-residence.

Faculty Artist Series: John Cord, trumpet

John Cord will present trumpet recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program consists of works by William Lathum, Giuseppe Torelli, Joaquin Rodrigo and Kevin McKee. Cord will also premiere "Homage" by Mike D'Ambrosio.

Art Song Jamboree March 9

The second Song Jam of the 2014-15 Luther Art Song Jamboree series will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, March 9, in the CFL. Art Song concerts are open to the public with no charge for admission. The program includes repertoire by composers Pauline Viardot, Mathilde Kralik, Judith Cloud, Margaret Garwood, Mel Bonis, Betty Jackson King and Margaret Bonds.

Faith, Peace, and Leadership: A Conversation with Mary McAleese

Renowned for humanitarian efforts during her terms as president of Ireland, Mary McAleese will highlight the peace process in Ireland during the onstage conversation, "Faith, Peace, and Leadership: A Conversation with Mary McAleese, President of Ireland 1997-2011," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the CFL. A question and answer session and book signing will follow McAleese's talk. Part of Luther's Distinguished Lecture Series, these events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Faculty Artist Series: Jon Ailabouni, jazz trumpet

Jon Ailabouni will perform a jazz trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission and will feature Hard Drop 5, Ailabouni's Chicago-based jazz quintet.

'The Fire this Time: St. Louis, Ferguson and the American City'

Colin Gordon, University of Iowa professor of history, will present the guest lecture, "The Fire this Time: St. Louis, Ferguson and the American City," at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in Valders 206.

The event, part of the "Don't Shoot" Series, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The lecture, based on Gordon's work, focuses on how the intersection of politics, public policy, economics and race result in social and economic inequalities in troubled cities.
