Facilities Services warns of icy sidewalks and streets

Facilities Services reminds everyone to be cautious when walking on sidewalks and streets. As snow melts and refreezes during the overnight periods, these areas can be slippery. The grounds crew knows where problem areas are on campus and are treating those areas early in the morning. Please be careful on the way to campus as well. To report a slippery area on campus, please call 387-1146.

Farwell elevator unavailable during spring break

A reminder to faculty and staff: During spring break Farwell Hall will be locked. The hall will reopen at 10 a.m., March 22. Staff and faculty should take note that these hours include the use of the Farwell elevator.

2015 Paideia summer reading

The Paideia 111-112 planning committee has chosen Cristina Henríquez's novel, "The Book of Unknown Americans," as the 2015 summer reading. It's a story about family, responsibility, hope and regret; told by an array of characters from Central and South America.

Peace scholars announced

The Honors Advisory Committee is pleased to announce this year's Luther Peace Scholars. Congratulations to Katie Kovacovich '16, majoring in social work, and Emily Holm '17, majoring in religion, who will spend seven weeks this summer with other Peace Scholars from Augsburg, Augustana (Sioux Falls), Concordia (Moorhead), Pacific Lutheran and St. Olaf studying peace and conflict resolution in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.

Krahn Family Student Service Award

Student Life is accepting nominations for the Krahn Family Student Service Award. Nominees should be sophomore and junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Nominations may be submitted here through April 3.

March staff meetings

Vice presidents Keith Christensen, Kevin Kraus, Rob Larson and Scot Schaeffer will share updates from their areas at the March staff meeting. Staff are encouraged to attend of one of the sessions: 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, or 9 a.m. Thursday, March 26. Both meetings will be held in Peace Dining Room.

Lunch hour yoga

Join Molly Lesmeister for a six-week yoga session March 23-April 30. Two class options offered: Monday 11 a.m. and Thursday 1 p.m. Classes are 50 minutes in length. Sign up for one class a week, or both. Beginners welcome. Class will be held in the CFA. Props provided, no experience necessary. Registration is $18 for one class per week and $36 for two classes per week. Checks can me made payable to Luther College, payment due the first day of class. Avoid identity theft

To avoid identify theft such as fraudulent tax filing, be careful with any forms that contain a social security number. Do not send email or attachments of documents containing a name, birth date, and social security number. Shred any paper documents for disposal. There are no home sporting events this week. However, congratulations are in order for Clare Slagel, from the swimming and diving team competing at nationals this week in Shenandoah, Texas. Luther College Woman's Club

Luther College Woman's Club meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, in Peace Dining Room. The program is titled "World Immigration and Up and Moving Arts: Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong," with presenters Ruth Palmer, Marybeth Gallant, Diane Sondrol and Brenda Harris. Hear a treat from the music department, a brief business meeting, an update of campus news and enjoy refreshments. All are welcome.

90th Birthday Reception

Ruth Fjelstad will be honored from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, in the Conference Room of the Loyalty Hall Alumni and Development Building. Please join Ruth's family and friends in commemorating this milestone. Ruth is professor emerita of Spanish and taught at Luther from 1954-1989.

Prairie burn training

Training sessions for participation in prescribed burns on Luther's natural areas will be at 8 p.m. Monday, March 23 in Valders 262 and at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 in Valders 262. Luther Art Exhibit: "Where There Were Many" by Hargrave and Ginsburg

"Where There Were Many" a collaborative "growing" exhibit by artists Katie Hargrave and Amber Ginsburg, and Luther College Art 111 3D Processes students, taught by Joe Madrigal, will be on display March 24-April 29, in the Wigley-Fleming Gallery.

A gallery reception for the artists will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 30. The gallery reception and the exhibit are open to the public with no charge for admission.

'How to Teach Philosophy of Religion at a College of the Church' Timothy Knepper to present guest lecture

Timothy Knepper, associate professor of religion at Drake University, will present the guest lecture "How to Teach Philosophy of Religion at a College of the Church" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

D'Ambrosio to read selected works

Author Charles D'Ambrosio will present a reading of selected works at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in Olin Room 102. This addition to the Guest Readings series is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Gifts from Norway: Fifth annual Knut Gjerset lecture March 26

The fifth annual Knut Gjerset lecture, "Gifts from Norway," will be presented by Laurann Gilbertson, chief curator of the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the Recital Hall of the CFL.

A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge of the CFL. The lecture and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther Music Department presents Handel's 'Messiah'

The Luther Music Department will present Handel's "Messiah" as the Spring 2015 oratorio performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 27 in the CFL main hall. Tickets are free for Luther students , faculty and staff. The performance includes student soloists, Luther's Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra, conducted at the performance by Allen Hightower, Luther director of choral activities and professor of music. A second performance will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

Living history: A Holocaust survivor story

Esther Bauer will recount her harrowing experiences as a Holocaust Survivor in the lecture "Living History: A Holocaust Survivor Story" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the CFL Main Hall. Bauer will share the story of her amazing, educated and liberated mother Marie Anna Jonas who was a medical doctor stripped of her ability to practice by Reich Citizen Law. Bauer speaks to students as often as she can so that they will "learn what happened, and see to it that it never happens again." This event is being sponsored by the Student Activities Council, Leadership committee. Tickets are $5.

FAS: Luther Piano Quartet to present recital

The Luther College Piano Quartet will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program opens with Mozart's Piano Quartet in G minor, followed by Antonin Dvorak's Miniatures for String Trio, and concludes with Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet in E-flat major.

Celebrate Easter with College Ministries

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a community-wide Easter Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah. Area ELCA congregations and pastors are coming together for this service. Luther students and Pastor Amy Zalk Larson will share in leadership. An offering will be collected to support missionaries Mary Beth and Bayo Oyebade in their work with those impacted with HIV/Aids in Jos, Nigeria. Email <ministry> for a ride to the service.

'Somewhere in America:' Sylvia Chan-Malik to present Sihler lecture

Sylvia Chan-Malik will present the lecture, "'Somewhere in America': Exploring the 20th-21st Century Musical and Cultural Expressions of U.S. Muslim Women" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in Olin Room 102. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Women, Faith, and Finance Seminar

On Friday, April 10, Luther is hosting the 11th annual Women, Faith, and Finance seminar at the Hotel Winneshiek. Women of all ages are invited to come and learn more about financial management, retirement, estate planning and charitable giving. Cost is $30 or bring a friend, and each save $5. Dance Marathon

Luther College Dance Marathon is a student organization on campus that strives to provide a community of emotional and financial support for the children of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital, one of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Sympathy

To President Carlson and her family on the death of her father, Einar Roald Carlson, on Friday, March 13. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Roald Carlson was a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He resided with his wife, Marjorie, at their home in St. Paul, Minnesota. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at Christ Church Lutheran, 3244 34th Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55406. There will be visitation at 10 a.m. prior to the service. A luncheon for all will follow at the church.

Director of Counseling Service

Full-time director of Counseling Service who will provide comprehensive leadership and clinical direction for all dimensions of the Counseling Service, play an active role within the Student Life Division and contribute to divisional collaboration and planning. The Director will also lead the Counseling Service in partnering with an array of student support services and other college programs to respond to student mental health issues and promote student wellness.

Director of the Nena Amundson Lifetime Wellness Program

Full-time Director of the Nena Amundson Lifetime Wellness Program. This endowed position was established to bring focus to the array of issues that center on healthy living and wellness. The Director should possess social entrepreneurial skills and provide creative leadership to assure continuation of the lifetime wellness program in order to meet the needs of a campus community of 2,500 students and 600 employees. The position has major responsibilities for the development, implementation and evaluation of the program and reports to the Vice President and Dean for Student Life for programmatic aspects and to the Health and Physical Education and Athletic Training department chair for teaching duties.

Regional admissions counselor—Twin Cities

Primary responsibilities of the position include coordinating the recruitment of students from Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. Candidates must be currently based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, or be willing to relocate to the area at the time of employment. Previous experience in admissions or a related field is preferred, and an appreciation for residential, liberal arts colleges would be helpful. A bachelor's degree is required, and applicants must have a valid driver's license.

Outdoor/Environmental Education Fellow

This is a six-month, full-time, 40 hour per week, position starting April or May 2015 and ending November or December 2015. Responsibilities include teaching, planning, and implementing environmental programming throughout the summer and fall for students pre-K–12th grade, including six weeks of summer camp and a high school pre-college course in environmental studies.
