The first phase of the Lecture and Fine Arts Committee application review cycle will be open April 15-29. Summer reading available
Copies of the 2015 summer reading, "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Cristina Henríquez, are now available free of charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who will not be receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. The Paideia Governing Board and the office of the Dean invite you to join in conversation with the first-year class. It is a story about family, responsibility, hope and regret; told by an array of characters from Central and South America.
Community supported agriculture rebates - sign-up deadline May 1
Employee households are eligible to receive up to $100 towards the purchase of a Community Supported Agriculture share or Garden Membership in 2015. Options include: a regular box of vegetables (traditional share, winter share), farmer's stand at the farmer's market (market share), or receive assistance with planting and maintaining a vegetable garden (garden membership). Energy walk
Join sustainability staff at 8 p.m. Wednesday nights through May 13 for a walk around campus to identify energy inefficiencies and areas for improvement and to earn yourself a Sugar Bowl gift card. Meet in Valders 374.
Luther and climate change
The Center for Sustainable Communities is hosting a series titled, "Luther and Climate Change." The series will run from 9:40-10:30 a.m. Thursday mornings in Valders 367. The presentations will focus on one topic each and will last about 15 minutes, followed by a question and answer session, and discussion. Upcoming sessions focus on economics, technology, Luther's commitments and actions, and local food. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be provided.
Exhibit of Strauss Scholarly Music Editions in Preus Library
The exhibit "Music Publishing Then and Now” is on display on the Main Floor of Preus Library. The exhibit features scholarly editions of compositions edited by John F. and Virginia F. Strauss and an overview of their 30 years of work in bringing the compositions of Ignaz Pleyel and Johann Vanhal to a broader audience. The display will be available through early June.
Summer 2015 Faculty Computer Refresh
LIS will host a session on the Summer 2015 Faculty Computer Roll Tuesday April 21, 9:45-10:45 a.m. in Koren 217. Dan Davis, assistant professor of Classics at Luther, will lead a marine archeology program for Luther College Woman's Club at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in Peace Dining Room. Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley present lecture
Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley will present the Paideia Texts and Issues lecture "Invisible Geographies: Violence and Oppression in the Prison Industrial Complex and Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the CFL Recital Hall. A reception, held in Qualley Lounge, will follow the lecture. Both the lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther College Cantorei and Luther Ringers to perform April 24
Luther College's Cantorei and Luther Ringers will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, in the Noble Recital Hall. Cantorei, an auditioned women's choral ensemble with 36 members, is directed by Linda Martin. The Luther Ringers, a 13-member bell choir, is directed by Gregory Peterson. Together, Cantorei and the Luther Ringers will perform "Peter, Go Ring them Bells" arranged by Gwyn Arch.
Geocache for College Cash
It is Money Smart Week April 20-24 and students can play "Geocache for College Cash" in Preus Library. Spread the word–students need to find seven posters, learn about seven financial topics every college student should know, answer seven quiz questions and can then be entered in the drawing for a $1,000 scholarship. Students can scan QR codes on posters to answer questions or use URL. Sponsored by Preus Library, Student Support Services and the Financial Aid Office.
Victoria Barnett to give lecture on Dietrich Bonhoeffer April 23
Victoria Barnett, staff director at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and member of the museum's committee on ethics, religion and the Holocaust will present a lecture at 6:30 p.m., April 23, in Olin 102. The lecture, titled "Dietrich Bonhoeffer: 'Unfinished' Hero," is open to the public with no charge for admission. A reception will follow the lecture. Barnett will discuss the ethics of resistance in the Holocaust in relation to Bonhoeffer.
Discovery Day
All children in grades K–6 are invited to Discovery Day, sponsored by the Luther Environmental Education class, 9 a.m.–noon, Saturday, April 25. Luther hosts tiny house workshop April 25
After hosting a well-attended lecture by "The Big Tiny" author Dee Williams last September, the Luther College Center for Sustainable Communities will host a workshop for local tiny house owners and enthusiasts 10 a.m., Saturday, April 25, in Valders 206. The workshop is open to the public with no charge for admission, but registration is requested. Those interested may register here.
Luther College opera featured in 'Arias in April'
Iowa Public Radio will feature Luther College productions of Puccini's "Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi" at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, and at 10 p.m. Sunday, April 26. Luther to host April 27 Preview Day
Luther College will host a Preview Day for current high school juniors Monday, April 27, giving students the opportunity to see the quality of life on campus, discover the academic excellence of Luther students, and explore what life at Luther is really like. Parents are welcome to attend this event. Current high school juniors can come learn about Luther's campus with a student-led tour and see the best places to study, eat and play.
Luther College Cathedral Choir to perform homecoming concert
Luther's Cathedral Choir will perform a homecoming concert titled, "I Believe," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance concludes the 2015 Cathedral Choir tour. The 2015 Cathedral Choir tour program includes works by Bradley Ellingboe, Eriks Esenvalds, Ola Gjeilo, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Rosephanye Powell, Jake Runestad and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Luther College Jazz Band to perform April 29
The Luther College Jazz Band will present a concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert features performances by the Luther College Jazz Quartet, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Oneota Jazz Quartet. Jazz Band will perform works by Mary Lou Williams, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Tito Puente and Thad Jones, featuring two selections to honor the memory of Fred Sturm, a jazz educator, composer, arranger and friend of jazz at Luther, who passed away last year.

Luther College Jazz Orchestra to perform April 30

Luther presents 'Metamorphoses' by Mary Zimmerman
Luther's Visual and Performing Art department presents "Metamorphoses" by Mary Zimmerman. The performances will be held in the Jewel Theatre on May 1-2 and 7-9. "Metamorphoses" retells ancient myths from Ovid's narrative poetry in contemporary fashion to explore each myth's elusive meaning. Due to adult themes and content, only mature audiences are encouraged to attend. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at www.tickets.luther.edu or at the Luther Ticket Office.

Job openings
Athletic Director: Full-time, 12-month position. Administers the NCAA Division III athletics program at Luther, ensuring compliance with federal, Iowa and NCAA policies, and provides strategic leadership, direction and oversight for all aspects of the Luther athletics program. He/she is responsible for hiring coaches and other staff, fiscal affairs, strategic planning, facilities and general operations. The Athletic Director manages more than 40 staff, 19 varsity sports programs, and activities that support approximately 500 student-athletes. The athletic director reports directly to Luther's president and works closely with campus leaders including vice presidents for finance and administration, facilities, admissions, student life, academic affairs, communications and marketing, development, and others, as well as health and physical education, athletic training, and coaching and administrative staff of the Athletics Department.
Facilities Coordinator: This full-time position will act as the Facilities Services representative for small campus projects and perform careful project planning. Interaction between multiple departments will be required to coordinate campus events and provide direction for campus moving crew. Coordinator will manage freight deliveries, track furniture use and condition, report data regarding energy consumption, and assist outside vendors with equipment issues and gaining access to campus buildings. A high school diploma or equivalent is required as well as strong MS Excel and Word skills.
Full-time Admissions Counselor: Primary responsibilities of the position include coordinating the recruitment of students from a specific geographical region, visiting targeted high schools, and attending select college fair programs. Duties will also include interviewing prospective students on campus and assisting with other admissions-related activities/events as assigned. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. A bachelor’s degree is required, and applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
Student Engagement Coordinator: This .92 FTE, benefit eligible, entry-level management position plans, directs, and coordinates all components of the student engagement functions of the Development Office. This is an 11-month per year position. Duties of this position include: manage the fall and spring telephone solicitation program; create and coordinate all related communications (including social media) with students, donors, faculty and staff; recruit and train/educate all volunteer- and paid-student callers. A bachelor’s degree is required. Successful candidate will be skilled in working with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; video editing software; desktop publishing software; e-communications and marketing; and social media platforms.

Dean Vesperman will present two research projects at the American Educational Research Association on pre-service teachers conceptions of citizenship and democracy. The first proposal is titled "Effects of weekly reflection on preservice teachers' conceptions of citizenship" with David Caulfield. The other presentation is "Preservice teachers shifting conceptions of democracy." Both presentations demonstrate that prolonged critical reflection on citizenship and democracy led to substantive qualitative transformations on how PSTs conceptualized these important concepts.
Martin Klammer presented "Frederick Douglass’s 1845 Narrative and the Power of Literacy" at The Association for Core Texts and Courses twenty-first annual conference, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on April 11.
Andy Hageman received the Mary Kay Bray Award from the Science Fiction Research Association for a collaboratively written piece on the Jonathan Glazer film "Under the Skin."
JeanRyan, presented "Tips and Tricks for Colleague Administrators" at the 2015 Ellucian LIVE conference in New Orleans April 12-15. She is active in Ellucian user community serving on the Community Source Initiative group, Colleague Technical Client Advisory Board, Human Resources focus group and Accounts Receivable focus group.
Holly Moore presented her paper, " 'Not with an Ax': Using Feminist Theory to Clarify Anaxagoras' Ontological Pluralism" at the Penn Ancient Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania April 18.
Anna Burke '15 and Beth Lynch attended the annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science. Burke presented a talk about her senior project, "Vascular plants diversity in forested seeps of Winneshiek County, Iowa."
