Summer reading available
Copies of the 2015 summer reading, "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Cristina Henríquez, are now available free of charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who will not be receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. The Paideia Governing Board and the office of the Dean invite you to join in conversation with the first-year class. It is a story about family, responsibility, hope and regret; told by an array of characters from Central and South America.
Community supported agriculture rebates - sign-up deadline May 1
Employee households are eligible to receive up to $100 towards the purchase of a Community Supported Agriculture share or Garden Membership in 2015. Options include: a regular box of vegetables (traditional share, winter share), farmer's stand at the farmer's market (market share), or receive assistance with planting and maintaining a vegetable garden (garden membership). Faculty recognition events
Faculty and staff are invited to attend two faculty recognition events. A reception honoring 10 colleagues marking 25-year anniversaries will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 12. A reception and dinner honoring 13 faculty who are retiring will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14. Both events will be held in Peace Dining Room. Attention shuttle riders
After much discussion and consideration, the shuttle will now require that all shuttle tickets must be purchased 24 hours in advance of initial departure time for the 2015-2016 Academic Year. This information has been posted on the shuttle website along with shuttle schedule for 2015-16. https://tickets.luther.edu/Online/shuttle. This new policy is in effect for all online ticket sales as well as in-person ticket office sales. No exceptions will be made, please plan schedules accordingly. Luther logos licensing plans canceled
Plans to license use of Luther's logos are canceled. However, new information on logo usage has been added to luther.edu/publications. A navigation button, "Luther logos usage" links to two new pages. "Campus groups" tells which organizations should use which logos and has instructions for student organizations that want to sell fundraising merchandise. "Vendors" tells vendors whether they need approval for designs using the logos, and how to get it. Direct questions to <publications>.
Fiscal year end approaching
The end of the fiscal year is approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by Sunday, May 31, to be expensed to a fiscal year 2014-15 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 12 to be included in FY 2014-15 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 5. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.
Campus programming reminder
All campus events must be scheduled on the campus calendar and have a facility reserved before it can occur. This is true for all academic and staff departments and student organizations. To secure a spot for an event, stop in the Campus Programming office in the CFL or submit the Event Request Form located at: https://www2.luther.edu/
Finals Prep Week
A campus programming reminder to all that Tuesday-Sunday, May 12-16 is considered Finals Prep Week and is intended to provide additional space for students to prepare for tests, papers and finals. These six days are set aside for academic preparation for finals and Luther does not schedule public events during this time, including student-led events. All campus events conclude before May 12. Exceptions include athletic events, social gatherings, Cool Aid, student research symposia and Senior Recognition Day and Research Symposium.

Disaster relief collection
Nepalese Luther students and College Ministries are collecting funds for those affected by the earthquake in Nepal. Funds will be sent to the ELCA's Lutheran Disaster Response. LDR works in partnership with local leaders and agencies and stays long after a disaster. One hundred percent of funds designated for earthquake relief will be used to assist those directly impacted. Moments of Silence
To raise awareness on campus about issues of race, gender and poverty, and to express solidarity with families and communities suffering as they grieve the untimely deaths of their loved ones after the Ferguson incidents, the Don’t Shoot Group is sponsoring Moments of Silence. MOS remembers the victims of police violence and challenges all to speak up. From 10:50 to 10:55 a.m. through May 14, at Bentdahl Commons, a biography of one of the victims will be read before a brief moment of silence. All will then be asked to leave in silence.
Luther College's psychology department presents Michael S. Barry April 28
The Luther College psychology department presents a guest lecture by the Rev. Dr. Michael S. Barry, "Forgiving yourself and others: Keys to health and happiness," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in Olin 102. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. In "Forgiving yourself and others," Barry will speak about the connection between a spirit of forgiveness and physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health.
Luther College Jazz Band to perform April 29
The Luther College Jazz Band will present a concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert features performances by the Luther College Jazz Quartet, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Oneota Jazz Quartet. Jazz Band will perform works by Mary Lou Williams, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Tito Puente and Thad Jones, featuring two selections to honor the memory of Fred Sturm, a jazz educator, composer, arranger and friend of jazz at Luther, who passed away last year.
Immigration Panel
The spring Immigration Panel hosted by HOLA-Enlaces Spanish club is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in Valders 206. Professors Pedro dos Santos, Megan Strom and David Thompson will discuss current immigration issues in the United States with a particular focus on immigration in the Decorah and surrounding communities.

The Luther College Religion Department will host "Studying Religion at a College of the Church," the final event in the 2014-15 Luther College Religion Forum Series, "Teaching Religion at a College of the Church." Asian Film Series: The Piano in a Factory
Asian Film Series presents a 2010 Chinese drama film, "The Piano in a Factory" (gang de qin) at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in Preus Library, Hovde Room. Set in the 1990s, a laid-off worker was betrayed by his wife, who remarried a rich businessman. To fight for custody of his daughter who loves playing the piano, a steel factory worker decides to forge a piano from scratch. Luther College Jazz Orchestra to perform April 30
In recognition of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Luther College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance, part of the Jazz Orchestra's spring tour of the Upper Midwest, is open to the public with no charge for admission. The concert will be streamed live at: stream.luther.edu.

Luther presents 'Metamorphoses' by Mary Zimmerman
Luther's Visual and Performing Art department presents "Metamorphoses" by Mary Zimmerman. The performances will be held in the Jewel Theatre on May 1-2 and 7-9. "Metamorphoses" retells ancient myths from Ovid's narrative poetry in contemporary fashion to explore each myth's elusive meaning. Due to adult themes and content, only mature audiences are encouraged to attend. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at www.tickets.luther.edu or at the Luther Ticket Office.
May 2 Environmental Studies Visit Event
Get an early start on college visits while experiencing the rich outdoor environment of Northeast Iowa's Driftless Region at Luther College's Environmental Studies Visit Event on Saturday, May 2, on the Luther campus. See firsthand how Luther's wind turbine, use of solar panels, local food production, composting and production of its own biofuel combine to make it one of the "greenest universities" in the nation.
First annual KWLC block party
KWLC invites everyone to the first annual KWLC block party from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, on Bentdahl Commons. This music festival will feature two Luther student bands, Coastal Cabins and Driftwood Bones as well as other festive block party activities. Luther's Philharmonia to perform on May 2
Luther College's Philharmonia will perform works by Gounod, Holst and Dvorak at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in the Noble Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Philharmonia will perform Charles Gounod's Petite Symphonie for winds, "St. Paul Suite" by Gustav Holst and Antonin Dvorak's "Czech Suite."
Tau Delta Gamma hosts events for cancer awareness
Luther's Tau Delta Gamma will host a bowling fundraiser to raise money for cancer awareness, from 5-11 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Oneota Lanes. Cost to bowl is $5, which includes shoe rental and one game of bowling, as well as giveaways and pizza while supplies last. Bowling additional games costs $1 per game. All funds raised will stay local, funding free mammograms with Winneshiek County Celebration of Life.

Donna Kubesh retirement celebration
Donna Kubesh, associate professor of nursing, will retire after 33 years of service to Luther. During her time at the college, Kubesh served on numerous committees, taught classes throughout all grade levels and was the Department Head for 15 years. All are welcome to wish her well on retirement from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, on the patio located on the south side of Valders. Weather location: Sampson Hoffland atrium.

'From Odin to Christ- How Runes Speak of Religion'
Henrik Williams, Uppsala University professor of Scandinavian Languages, will present the guest lecture "From Odin to Christ- How Runes Speak of Religion" at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, in Olin 102. A reception will follow the lecture, both are open to the public with no charge for admission. According to Norse myth, the god Odin invented runes, which are illustrated on rune stones. The oldest runic inscriptions provide a glimpse of Pagans in action.
'Exploring the World and Finding our Place' Center for Sustainable Communities hosts Luther alumnus Chuck Stark
After backpacking, rock-climbing, and kayaking his way around the U.S. and Costa Rica, Chuck Stark ('06), will present, "Exploring the World and Finding our Place" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in Valders Room 206. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Stark will share the explorations he has taken since his time at Luther and discuss where adventures may take others in the audience using the idea that exploration happens any time.
Student recitals
Kaia Sand, Luther College senior from Zumbrota, Minnesota, will perform an oboe recital at noon Saturday, May 9.
Recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus with receptions to follow. Recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther College to host trumpeter John Marchiando May 9
Principal trumpeter John Marchiando will present a guest recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The concert will also feature Du Huang, Luther associate professor of music, piano, and John Cord, Luther assistant professor of music, trumpet.

Job openings
Facilities coordinator: This full-time position will act as the Facilities Services representative for small campus projects and perform careful project planning. Interaction between multiple departments will be required to coordinate campus events and provide direction for campus moving crew. Coordinator will manage freight deliveries, track furniture use and condition, report data regarding energy consumption, and assist outside vendors with equipment issues and gaining access to campus buildings. A high school diploma or equivalent is required as well as strong MS Excel and Word skills.
Full-time admissions counselor: Primary responsibilities of the position include coordinating the recruitment of students from a specific geographical region, visiting targeted high schools and attending select college fair programs. Duties also include interviewing prospective students on campus and assisting with other admissions-related activities/events as assigned. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. A bachelor's degree is required, and applicants must have a valid driver's license.
Student engagement coordinator: This .92 FTE, benefit eligible, entry-level management position plans, directs and coordinates all components of the student engagement functions of the Development Office. This is an 11-month per year position. Duties of this position include: manage the fall and spring telephone solicitation program; create and coordinate all related communications (including social media) with students, donors, faculty and staff; recruit and train/educate all volunteer- and paid-student callers. A bachelor's degree is required. Successful candidate will be skilled in working with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint; video editing software; desktop publishing software; e-communications and marketing; and social media platforms.
Energy and Waste Fellow: This is a 10-month, full-time, 40 hour/week, (.83 FTE) position starting Aug. 1 and ending May 31. The Energy and Waste Fellow works with faculty, staff and students to educate the Luther community about the college's energy and waste reduction goals and related initiatives. A bachelor’s degree, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people required.
Admissions full-time coordinator of special events: responsible for all aspects of on-campus recruiting events including planning, invitation, registration and evaluation. Requirements include a bachelor's degree, with a master's preferred, above average communication skills and three years experience in admissions or a related field.

Kristy Gould, Debra Hansberry ’15, Emily Hasher ’15, Elizabeth Beckham ’15 and Rachel Rem ’16 attended the International Conference on Comparative Cognition in Melbourne Beach, Florida, April 15-18. Hansberry and Beckham presented their research "The Influence of Human Familiarity and Attentional State on Eating Behavior in Blue Jays". Hasher and Rem presented the research "Mirror-Induced, Mark-Directed Behavior in Blue Jays" with other co-authors Kristen Flick ’15, Zoe Bachman ’16 and Angelica Mangiamele ’16. Rem presented the research "Modified Two-Choice Hidden Food Task with Blue Jays Using Human Gesture and Gaze Information" with other co-authors including Jonathon Nerdig ’14, Allison Bird ’15, and Kyrie Dailey ’15.
Norma Hervey is serving as a peer reviewer for the Fulbright Association. Harvey will also be a panelist, speaking on the Civil Rights Movement, at the Charles University Allen Ginsberg Memorial Festival in May.
J. R. Christianson has signed a contract with the London publisher, Reaktion Books, to write a biography of Tycho Brahe in a series on "Renaissance Lives." The tentative book title is "Tycho Brahe and the Measure of the Heavens."
Kate Elliott recently published her article "Reclaiming the Land, Reclaiming the Indian: The La Salle series of George Catlin," in the journal, "American Nineteenth Century History." This article examines a series of paintings by the American artist George Catlin, arguing that Catlin used the series as a sort of reclamation project in which he sought to rescue and imagined "pure" past at contact and preserve it in paint in order to make it available and useful to the present.
Thomas Tourdot '15, Casey Liveringhouse '15 and Jamison Ash '14 presented their summer research "PI3K/Akt/DAF-16 Activity is Protective During Excess Iron Exposure in C. elegans" and Stephanie Fretham presented an educational poster "Use of Multiple Model Systems to Develop Student-Designed Research Projects in an Undergraduate Toxicology Course" at the Society of Toxicology Meeting in San Diego, California, on March 22-25.

Lori Stanley presented "Ujamaa: Introducing African Socialism and the Concept of ‘Key Symbols’ through Material Culture" at the annual meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology, March 24-28, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Iowa Conference of the American Association of University Professors announced the conferring of two awards for outstanding service at its April 11 meeting. The conference presented Ruth Caldwell, professor of modern language at Luther College, with the 2015 Edward S. Allen Award and Warren Zemke, emeritus professor of chemistry at Wartburg College, with the 2014 Edward S. Allen Award.
Ginger Meyette has accepted an invitation to join the National Leadership Team for the Sexuality and Aging Consortium based at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. Meyette has also has been elected to the position of Vice Chair of the Decorah Human Rights Commission.
