Holiday

The Luther College campus will be closed on Monday, May 25, in honor of Memorial Day. 

Leadership in the Diversity Center

President Paula Carlson is pleased to announce the appointment of Wintlett Taylor-Browne as interim director of the Diversity Center, effective immediately.

Nena Amundson Wellness director 

Chandra Jennings has been appointed the new Director of the Nena Amundson Wellness Program. Jennings is a 2008 graduate of Luther College and currently serves as assistant professor of Community Health Education and the Wellness program developer and coordinator at the University of Maine, Farmington. She earned her bachelor's degree from Luther with a double major in health and psychology. Jennings earned her master's in health education and psychology of physical activity in August 2010 and a PhD in health education in 2013 from the University of Kansas. Jennings will begin her work on July 27. She is joined with her partner Scott, also a Luther graduate, along with their two dogs and cat.

Move Out Day parking restrictions

To help facilitate closing of the residence halls there will be restricted access on High Street from Koren to Center Street for loading and unloading starting at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, until 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 21. The faculty/staff parking along this section will be closed during that time to allow better access to those moving out of Brandt. In addition, faculty and staff are asked not park in the small lot south of Ylvisaker and east of the CFL on Thursday, May 21, so those moving out of Ylvisaker may utilize this space.

Sign up for staff day

A Luther Luau is the theme for Staff Day on Tuesday, June 9. Registration begins at noon and lunch is in Peace Dining Room at 12:15 p.m., followed by two breakout sessions. A closing program and the announcement of the 2015 Staff Excellence Award winners will be at 3:15 p.m. in Peace Dining Room.  All staff who participate in Staff Day are free to go home at 4 p.m. Registration deadline is Friday, May 22. Luther College presents third annual student leadership awards

Luther College's Launching Luther Leaders program announced the recipients of the third annual Student Leadership Awards to individuals and groups for their contribution to the college's mission of service at their banquet held Sunday, May 3, on the Luther campus. Award recipients include Student Senate's Happiness Week for Outstanding Event or Activity; Luther College Dance Marathon for Outstanding Service Project; Maia Pugh was named Outstanding Student Leader and the Luther College Pep Band was awarded Outstanding Organization Award.

Lawn fertilization

Weather permitting, the college lawns will be fertilized and sprayed for broad-leaf weeds beginning Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31. For more information, contact Facilities Services, 387-1146.

Save the date: Iowa Private College Week

Luther will participate in Iowa's annual Private College Week which is scheduled for Monday-Friday, August 3-7. Morning and afternoon sessions take place each day. The Admissions office seeks faculty and staff participation for an academic fair that will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day. Assistance at any or all of the sessions would be appreciated. The fair is designed to allow prospective students and parents an opportunity to learn more about Luther's academic programs. More information and requests for coverage will be sent out this summer.

Native prairie plant sale

Brighten up your yard with native wildflowers and grasses, and provide benefits to native pollinators at the native prairie plant sale at Decorah's Farmers Market on Saturday, May 23. Proceeds benefit Luther's land stewardship program. Contact Molly, <mcnimo01>, with questions.

2015 Driftless Safari

Materials for the 2015 Driftless Safari program will be available at all county public libraries beginning Friday, May 22. This free, long-term scavenger hunt is open to everyone that loves to explore and wants to visit some amazing places in Winneshiek County. Course evaluation reports available week of June 8

Course evaluation reports will be finalized the week of June 8 on Google Drive. It is important to note that prior to the week of June 8, it may be possible to see Google placeholders for these "work in progress" reports, but please do not access them. LIS will announce when the reports are ready to be viewed.

Luther College Seeks Friendship Families

The International Student Friendship Family Program is seeking individuals and families in the Decorah community to help Luther College's incoming international students adjust to life at Luther College and in the United States. The goal of the program is to promote international understanding and develop an appreciation of how others live and view the world. Luther football continues educational experience in Norway

The Luther College football team has been in training this spring, running sprints, perfecting tackles, learning new plays… and reading history, studying culture and learning bits of a new language in order to travel to Norway and Denmark May 26-June 3, for an educational and athletic experience.

KATIE upgrade and Sandbox: summer 2015

August 2015 KATIE will be upgraded to version 2.8. To prepare for these changes, a test environment has been created called KATIE sandbox (sandbox.luther.edu) where it is possible to log in to a KATIE system running on 2.8. There is an option to request a current course be imported into the sandbox by contacting the LIS Technology Help Desk. Fiscal year end approaching

Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 12 to be included in FY 2014-15 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 5. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

New recycling infrastructure

New recycling bins on campus have been placed by Brandt, Olson, Farwell, Ylvi and Towers as a result of a partnership between Luther, Winneshiek county and a DNR grant. The bins make responsibly disposing of trash easy. It’s encouraged that everyone use them to reduce waste that would otherwise go to the landfill. When everyone is moving out, the college’s waste stream goes up. This makes recycling especially important. Please consider doing so.

Learning to Drive with Ms. Ruby: Luther College alumna teaches international students how to drive

Luther College alumna and Decorah local, Ruby Hermeier, lovingly referred to as "Ms. Ruby" by her pupils, has spent the past few years offering driving lessons to eager-to-learn international students. In the past four and a half years, she has helped 40 Luther students from nearly 20 different countries obtain their driver's license. As a retired teacher, the 81-year-old finds her satisfaction through her volunteer efforts. Her motto for giving life meaning after retirement is, "giving is living and living is giving." 

Holm and Kovacovich named Peace Scholars

Luther College juniors Emily Holm and Katie Kovacovich have been selected as Peace Scholars for the 2015-16 academic year. The pair will spend seven weeks this summer studying peace and conflict resolution in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway. 

New parental leave policies

Luther first-year students Hoff and Vande Krol awarded Peter Leadership Award

Luther first-year students Evie Hoff of Hortonville, Wisconsin, and Nicholas Vande Krol of Decorah, Iowa, were awarded the 2015 Timothy and Sandra Peter Leadership Award at Luther's annual Aurora and Norsemen spring concert on May 1.The Timothy and Sandra Peter Music Leadership Award was established in 2012 by alumni, parents and friends of Luther in celebration of the dedicated teaching and choral conducting careers of Tim, Luther class of 1986, and Sandra Peter.

Luther sophomore Kolek awarded Karen Julesberg Scholarship

Luther College sophomore Kalinda Kolek has received the Karen Julesberg Scholarship for the 2015-16 academic year. The $1,000 scholarship, created by Karen Julesberg of Madison, Wisconsin, Luther class of 1960, benefits Luther students involved in Student Support Services, a federal TRIO program sponsored by Luther since 1973.

Reception for Diane Tacke

Please join us in thanking Diane Tacke for more than 17 years of dedicated service to Luther College. A "Hats Off to Diane" farewell/retirement party will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in Peace Dinning. Attendees are invited to wear a favorite hat or a creative Diane-themed hat in her honor.

Pam Torresdal's retirement party

Please join us in celebrating Pam Torresdal's 30 years as director of Luther's Counseling Service. A retirement celebration will be held 10-11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 21, in the atrium on the second floor of the Union. Pam has been instrumental in creating a professional, welcoming mental health service for students, developing protocols for response to student crises and an ethical touchpoint for the entire Student Life staff. She will be missed.

Luther Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra perform showcase May 22

The Luther College Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform together for a Music Showcase, part of Luther's Commencement weekend events, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, in the CFL Main Hall.

Concert Band will perform the four movements of "Paris Sketches" by Martin Ellerby; "Irish Tune from County Derry" by Percy A. Grainger; "Masque" by Kenneth Hesketh; "Who Puts His Trust in God Most Just" by Bach, arranged by James Croft; and "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa.

Jazz Orchestra will perform "Song of Bilbao" by Pat Metheny, arranged by Alan Baylock; "Teach Me Tonight" with words by Sammy Cahn, music by Gene DePaul and arranged by Sammy Nestico; "Chinoiserie" by Duke Ellington, transcribed and edited by David Berger; and "Cherokee" by Ray Noble, arranged by Gary Lindsay.

The concert will also feature Vocal Jazz, performing "Danny Boy" arranged by Don Sebesky and "Partido Blue" by Michael Phillip Mossman.

Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra showcase May 23

The Luther College Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform together in a Music Showcase at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Nordic Choir will perform from a list of selections. Possible pieces include "Ave Verum Corpus" by William Byrd, "Singet Dem Herrn Ein Neues Lied" by Bach and "O Lord God" by Paul Chesnokov.

Symphony Orchestra will perform "Three Dances" from "The Three-Cornered Hat" by Mauel de Falla, "Ah! Je veux vivre" fromRoméo et Julietteby Charles Gounod, andCapriccio Espagnol, Op. 34 by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsako

Baccalaureate

A celebration and sending for the Class of 2015, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the CFL Main Hall. All are welcome. The celebratory worship service includes anthems by Collegiate Chorale conducted by Andrew Last, and hymns, prayers and blessings for graduates and their families. The service will last one hour. Rooted in the college's Lutheran Christian heritage and confidence in God's care for all people of the earth, this ecumenical service includes prayer petitions that celebrate the diversity of religious traditions represented in the graduating class.

Luther College to celebrate Commencement May 24

Luther College will celebrate Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 24, in Carlson Stadium when President Paula Carlson will confer the Bachelor of Arts degree on Luther's class of 2015. Mike Danforth, a 1995 graduate of Luther and executive producer of National Public Radio's "Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me!" will give the commencement speech. Tickets are required for those attending the ceremony. Guests with tickets should be seated by 9:45 a.m.

Joe Thompson retirement celebration

Joe Thompson, director of Athletics, will retire after 20 years of service to Luther. Under Joe's leadership, Luther has enjoyed tremendous success with its athletics programs at the conference, regional and national levels. Thompson was also the HPE department head for 15 years. All are welcome to wish him well on his retirement in Peace Dining from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, May 28. He will leave a lasting mark on Luther College and will be very much missed.

John Goodin retirement party

The campus community is invited to a retirement reception to honor John Goodin from 2:30-4 p.m on Thursday, May 28, in the Hovde Room, Preus Library. Please join us to thank John for his 21 years of service to Preus Library and Luther College. Refreshments will be served.

Farewell for Marty Berg

Please join the admissions office staff in honoring Marty Berg for her many years of service to Luther College. We will be celebrating Marty's retirement during an admissions office open house from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on Friday, May 29. Sympathy

To Joe Thompson and his family on the death of his father, Harold Thompson, who died Tuesday, May 13, at the Eastern Star Nursing Home, Decorah. He resided with his wife, Hazel, at their home in Moline, Illinois, for 73 years until the past few months when they came to live first with Joe and his wife, Rhonda, in their home and then for the last couple of months at the Eastern Star Nursing Home. Joe's mother, Hazel, passed away in March. Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling the pending arrangements. Interment will take place in Lyons, Nebraska, at a later date.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Anne Turco '16, Clare Slagel '16, Gage State '14, and Scott Carlson presented their research on "The Effect of Celiac and Renal Denervation in Angiotensin-Induced Hypertension" at the annual Iowa Physiological Society meetings. Turco was also selected to give the meeting's undergraduate research talk.

Signet Classics has just published an edition of William Riordon's Plunkitt of Tammany Hall, a classic work of American practical politics, with a new afterword by Philip Freeman.

America Walks, a national advocacy organization that promotes walking and walkable communities, announced that Ann Mansfield, R.N., M.S.N. and project coordinator for NE Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative, has been awarded a Walking College Fellowship. The Fellowship will enable Mansfield and 24 other advocates from around the country to participate in a five-month training program designed to strengthen local efforts to make communities more walkable and livable.

Jim Martin-Schramm served as the main speaker at a community forum on "Iowa, the United Nations, and Climate Change" sponsored by the Iowa United Nations Association and held at the Cedar Falls Public Library on May 18. The title of his presentation was "Climate Change is an Ethical Issue."

May 7-9, Anna Peterson and Maren Johnson attended the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio. Peterson gave a presentation titled "'Et skjærende misforhold mellom lovens hensikt og dens virkninger:'Single Mothers Respond to the Castberg Laws, 1916-1940." Johnson presented a paper titled, "Narrating Norway: Lilyhammer and the Imagination of Norway."

Storm Bailey presented a paper, "Liberal Pedagogy and the Salt of the Earth: Can the Virtue of the Few Change the Discourse of the Many?" May 8, at a conference on "Intellectual Virtue & Civil Discourse" at the Biola University Center for Christian Thought.
