Reception for Diane Tacke

A "Hats Off to Diane" farewell/retirement party will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in Peace Dinning. Pam Torresdal's retirement party

Please join us in celebrating Pam Torresdal's 30 years as director of Luther's Counseling Service. A retirement celebration will be held 10-11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 21, in the atrium on the second floor of the Union. Pam has been instrumental in creating a professional, welcoming mental health service for students, developing protocols for response to student crises and an ethical touchpoint for the entire Student Life staff. She will be missed.

Luther Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra perform showcase May 22

The Luther College Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform together for a Music Showcase, part of Luther's Commencement weekend events, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, in the CFL Main Hall.

Concert Band will perform the four movements of "Paris Sketches" by Martin Ellerby; "Irish Tune from County Derry" by Percy A. Grainger; "Masque" by Kenneth Hesketh; "Who Puts His Trust in God Most Just" by Bach, arranged by James Croft; and "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa.

Jazz Orchestra will perform "Song of Bilbao" by Pat Metheny, arranged by Alan Baylock; "Teach Me Tonight" with words by Sammy Cahn, music by Gene DePaul and arranged by Sammy Nestico; "Chinoiserie" by Duke Ellington, transcribed and edited by David Berger; and "Cherokee" by Ray Noble, arranged by Gary Lindsay.

The concert will also feature Vocal Jazz, performing "Danny Boy" arranged by Don Sebesky and "Partido Blue" by Michael Phillip Mossman.

Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra showcase May 23

The Luther College Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform together in a Music Showcase at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Nordic Choir will perform from a list of selections. Possible pieces include "Ave Verum Corpus" by William Byrd, "Singet Dem Herrn Ein Neues Lied" by Bach and "O Lord God" by Paul Chesnokov.

Symphony Orchestra will perform "Three Dances" from "The Three-Cornered Hat" by Mauel de Falla, "Ah! Je veux vivre" fromRoméo et Julietteby Charles Gounod, andCapriccio Espagnol, Op. 34 by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsako

Baccalaureate

A celebration and sending for the Class of 2015, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the CFL Main Hall. All are welcome. The celebratory worship service includes anthems by Collegiate Chorale conducted by Andrew Last, and hymns, prayers and blessings for graduates and their families. The service will last one hour. Rooted in the college's Lutheran Christian heritage and confidence in God's care for all people of the earth, this ecumenical service includes prayer petitions that celebrate the diversity of religious traditions represented in the graduating class.

Luther College to celebrate Commencement May 24

Luther College will celebrate Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 24, in Carlson Stadium when President Paula Carlson will confer the Bachelor of Arts degree on Luther's class of 2015. Mike Danforth, a 1995 graduate of Luther and executive producer of National Public Radio's "Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me!" will give the commencement speech. Tickets are required for those attending the ceremony. Guests with tickets should be seated by 9:45 a.m.

Joe Thompson retirement celebration

Joe Thompson, director of Athletics, will retire after 20 years of service to Luther. Under Joe's leadership, Luther has enjoyed tremendous success with its athletics programs at the conference, regional and national levels. Thompson was also the HPE department head for 15 years. All are welcome to wish him well on his retirement in Peace Dining from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, May 28. He will leave a lasting mark on Luther College and will be very much missed.

John Goodin retirement party

The campus community is invited to a retirement reception to honor John Goodin from 2:30-4 p.m on Thursday, May 28, in the Hovde Room, Preus Library. Please join us to thank John for his 21 years of service to Preus Library and Luther College. Refreshments will be served.

Farewell for Marty Berg

Please join the admissions office staff in honoring Marty Berg for her many years of service to Luther College. We will be celebrating Marty's retirement during an admissions office open house from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on Friday, May 29. We hope you can swing by the office for some refreshments and to wish Marty the best as she prepares for a new chapter in life.

Sympathy

To Joe Thompson and his family on the death of his father, Harold Thompson, who died Tuesday, May 13, at the Eastern Star Nursing Home, Decorah. He resided with his wife, Hazel, at their home in Moline, Illinois, for 73 years until the past few months when they came to live first with Joe and his wife, Rhonda, in their home and then for the last couple of months at the Eastern Star Nursing Home. Joe's mother, Hazel, passed away in March. Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling the pending arrangements. Interment will take place in Lyons, Nebraska, at a later date.

Anne Turco '16, Clare Slagel '16, Gage State '14, and Scott Carlson presented their research on "The Effect of Celiac and Renal Denervation in Angiotensin-Induced Hypertension" at the annual Iowa Physiological Society meetings. Turco was also selected to give the meeting's undergraduate research talk.

Signet Classics has just published an edition of William Riordon's Plunkitt of Tammany Hall, a classic work of American practical politics, with a new afterword by Philip Freeman.

America Walks, a national advocacy organization that promotes walking and walkable communities, announced that Ann Mansfield, R.N., M.S.N. and project coordinator for NE Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative, has been awarded a Walking College Fellowship. The Fellowship will enable Mansfield and 24 other advocates from around the country to participate in a five-month training program designed to strengthen local efforts to make communities more walkable and livable.

Jim Martin-Schramm served as the main speaker at a community forum on "Iowa, the United Nations, and Climate Change" sponsored by the Iowa United Nations Association and held at the Cedar Falls Public Library on May 18. The title of his presentation was "Climate Change is an Ethical Issue."

May 7-9, Anna Peterson and Maren Johnson attended the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio. Peterson gave a presentation titled "'Et skjærende misforhold mellom lovens hensikt og dens virkninger:'Single Mothers Respond to the Castberg Laws, 1916-1940." Johnson presented a paper titled, "Narrating Norway: Lilyhammer and the Imagination of Norway."

Storm Bailey presented a paper, "Liberal Pedagogy and the Salt of the Earth: Can the Virtue of the Few Change the Discourse of the Many?" May 8, at a conference on "Intellectual Virtue & Civil Discourse" at the Biola University Center for Christian Thought.
