Renae Hartl named new athletic director

Luther College President Paula J. Carlson has announced the appointment of Renae R. Hartl, as the college's new athletic director beginning July 1.

"Renae Hartl has a record of success as a head coach, administrator and instructor at Luther. She knows the college well, and she has a deep commitment to students, to the athletics program, and to Luther's mission. I look forward to her dedicated leadership and ongoing contributions to the college in her new position as athletic director," said President Carlson.

Hartl succeeds Joe Thompson, who served the college for 20 years as Luther's athletic director.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Copies of summer reading available

Copies of the 2015 summer reading, "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Cristina Henríquez, are still available free of charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who will not be receiving the book as part of their work with first-year students. The Paideia Governing Board and the Office of the Dean invite you to join in conversation with the first-year class. It is a story about family, responsibility, hope and regret; told by an array of characters from Central and South America.

Change in policy regarding funeral receptions

It has been the practice at Luther to help with food for funerals in the event of an employee death, the death of an employee spouse or dependent child, or the death of an emeriti faculty member or retiree.

It has become difficult to offer this gift equitably because many former employees move away from Decorah. In response, the college is changing its practice and will in the future assist with funeral receptions in the event of the death of a current employee or the death of a current employee's spouse or dependent child.

The new policy is the following: In the event of an employee death or the death of an employee's spouse or dependent child, Luther College will provide a $500 support gift to the family to help cover food and hospitality costs for the funeral or memorial service. This policy includes Sodexo and Ricoh employees who currently work at Luther College.

KATIE email errors fixed

The KATIE support team recognizes that erroneous emails were sent out during our work with course evaluations for the 2015SP courses. We have resolved this issue. We appreciate your understanding and will notify instructors when course evaluations are ready to view.

EVENTS

Chapel

Chapel will resume when the fall class schedule begins.

See the College Ministries webpage for the full chapel schedule, along with information on Sunday worship, Holden Evening Prayer and other worship opportunities.

How to build a low-cost hoophouse for home production

This class has been rescheduled for noon-1 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at the College Farm. Hoop houses provide shelter for seedlings and early and late season crops. Many companies now offer greenhouses and hoop houses that are sized for home production. These structures can be expensive but the good news is that you can build one yourself. Giles Teslow and Perry Halse will be on hand to provide design ideas and tips.

Green smoothie class June 26

Ever wondered about the green smoothie craze? Come taste how good spinach and pineapple juice are together. Be inspired and get green in the Green Smoothie God class. The class will be held from noon-1 p.m. Friday, June 26, in Valders 379. Ruth Jenkins from Oneota Food Coop will be the instructor. Registration is required.

Veggie Nori Rolls and Guo Cuon

Bring some new flavors into the kitchen with Nori Rolls and Guo Cuon. Eric Baack will demonstrate techniques and help you wrap your own creative rolls during this hands on class. These are a good snack for kids and a great way to have them assist with food preparation. The class will be held noon- 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, in Valders 379. Registration is required.

walkLUTHER staff book discussion

Like to read? Like to walk? Come on out for the walkLUTHER book discussion. Over the course of four Wednesdays in July (8, 15, 22 and 29) we will walk for approximately 30 minutes on the Luther campus while talking about the book "Shakespeare Saved my Life," English professor Laura Bates' account of her experiences teaching Shakespeare in a super-maximum security prison unit. Kristin Swanson will have a few discussion questions prepared each week to spark conversation while walking and you can bring your own questions, too. The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Union each Wednesday. The book is available at no cost in the bookstore; to participate please RSVP to Kristin Swanson <swansokr> by July 1 to make sure enough books are available.
