Service of Dedication
Faculty and staff, spouses and guests are invited to attend the annual Service of Dedication Thursday, Aug. 28 at 3:30 p.m. President Paula J. Carlson will deliver her State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. Offices are allowed to close for the dedication service so that as many employees as possible can attend. A reception will follow.
COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Parking restrictions this week
On Saturday, Aug. 30, Luther will see a flurry of activity as a mass of first year students and their families experience the joy of moving into our residence halls. For many this will be an emotional experience as the students embark on a new adventure and parents see them on their way. In an effort to make the experience a bit less stressful we will be reserving parking areas near the halls to accommodate the movers.
Special parking restrictions will go into effect starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. The small parking lot south of Ylvisaker and the lot north of Valders will be reserved for vehicles unloading for move in. High street between Jenson and Campus House will be designated as a one-way street, west to east, so moving vehicles may park on the north side of the street. There will be no parking on the south side of the street. Faculty, staff and students are asked to refrain from parking in these areas. Thank you for your cooperation in extending this welcome to the new members of the Luther community.

Health care update
New health care cards have been delivered by U.S. Mail to employees on Luther College's health care plan. These cards are to be used for both health and pharmacy needs.
The health care information on the card is the same. The pharmacy information has been updated to reflect the new pharmaceutical coverage that will take effect Sept. 1. Please present the new card to the pharmacist when the next prescription is picked up so that they can record the new information. Pharmacies have also been notified of the change.

Supporting Luther website users
On a responsive website, the layout adjusts based on the screen size. Please keep in mind when assisting people with the Luther website that users may see a different layout. There are two primary layouts: one for desktop and one for tablet/mobile. In the tablet/mobile view, the menus are collapsed and accessible through the "hamburger icons" (three horizontal bars). Interim director of Human Resources
Marsha Wenthold is serving as interim director of Human Resources until a new director is named. Matt Bills, visiting faculty in management, is working in the HR office assisting with several HR projects. The search for the new director is underway, and the college hopes to have a new director in place by mid-fall. Questions regarding HR procedure and policy should be directed to Marsha until a new director is named.

The cherry tomatoes are finally ripe in the Valders Edible Landscape. Search a little and there are some bright yellow cuties ready for picking. The peppers in both the Valders and Ylvisaker Edible Landscapes are also starting to poke their heads out. As always, there are lots of herbs and greens available. SAC Spotlight: Master Hypnotist Jim Wand Sept. 5
With more than 9,000 professional engagements to his name and a lengthy career spent building a fiercely entertaining repertoire, Master Hypnotist Jim Wand returns to Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
Pilates classes at Luther College
Luther is working in cooperation with Winneshiek Medical Center Rehab and Sports Medicine to provide Pilates fitness classes for faculty and staff.

Reason introductory and refresher training sessions
New to Reason, Luther's web content management system? Already been trained in Reason, but could use a refresher? If so, LIS is offering two sessions, Reason 101 and Reason 201, that will introduce users to the basic features of Reason, giving tips on how to write for the web, or give users a refresher on the basics and introduce different options in the new responsive design. Yoga lunch hour series
Join Molly Lesmeister for a six week yoga session starting Sept. 8. Two class options offered: Mondays at 11:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m. Sign up for one class a week, or both. Beginners welcome. Class will be held in Studio II of the CFA. Props provided, no experience necessary. Registration is $18 for one class per week and $36 for two classes per week. Women's Basketball Jr. Norse
Join us for Luther College Women's Basketball Jr. Norse 2014. Each week Jr. Norse will have the opportunity to interact with the 2014-15 Luther women's basketball team while participating in fundamental drills, team play, shooting competitions and more. Sessions are Sept. 18 and 25 and Oct. 2 and 9 from 6:15-7:30 p.m. in the Main Gym of the Regents Center. Girls in second-fifth grade are welcome. This summer, the Luther College Biology Department is investigating the Luther College wind turbine's impact on bats. Dawn Reding, Luther visiting assistant professor in biology, and students Mariah Crotty and Andrea Malek are using several methods to survey bat populations and estimate bat mortality caused by the sweeping rotor blades.
Richard G. Cole, emeritus professor of history, has a book review of: Richard Kirwan, Editor, "Scholarly Self-Fashioning and Community in the Early Modern University," Ashgate Press 2013. The review is in "The Sixteenth Century Journal," Journal of Early Modern Studies, vol. XLV, n.2 Summer 2014.
Andy Hageman published his essay "Wheels within Wheels: Ecology, and the Horrors of Mechanophobia" in the journal Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment. http://isle.oxfordjournals.
Library Journal has chosen Classics professor Philip Freeman's first fiction book, "Saint Brigid's Bones" as Debut Mystery of the Month and given it a starred review.
Du Huang performed and taught as a member of the piano faculty at the 2014 Saarburg International Music Festival in Germany this summer.
William Kuhlman, college organist and professor emeritus of music, performed an organ recital Aug. 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church Rochester, Minnesota.
Lauren Kientz Anderson's essay "'Free At Last' A Course on the Global Anti-Apartheid Movement" was published in the Radical History Review, Issue 119, Spring 2014, pages 205-212.
