ANNOUNCEMENTS
Opening Convocation Sept. 4
The entire campus is invited to opening convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Center for Faith and Life. A Luther alumnus who is a supervisory special agent with the FBI will give the address, discussing how we as a society are able to interact with the wider world through the Internet and how we act online determines how much others can know about us. This Opening Convocation begins a new academic year with a sense of purpose and inquiry, keeping in mind questions that books such as George Orwell's "1984" raise concerning what it means to be human in today's world.
In discussing the extent of government's online surveillance and the business practices of Internet companies selling user information for profit, "Where's your Pendulum?" offers valuable insight into the nature of Internet identity.
At 9:30 a.m. new students should gather in Bentdahl Commons and faculty should assemble on the sidewalk north of Koren. If possible, offices should close so all can attend.

Health care update
New health care cards have been delivered by U.S. Mail to employees on Luther College's health care plan. These cards are to be used for both health and pharmacy needs.
The health care information on the card is the same. The pharmacy information has been updated to reflect the new pharmaceutical coverage that will take effect Sept. 1. Please present the new card to the pharmacist when the next prescription is picked up so that they can record the new information. Pharmacies have also been notified of the change.

Supporting Luther website users
On a responsive website, the layout adjusts based on the screen size. Please keep in mind when assisting people with the Luther website that users may see a different layout. There are two primary layouts: one for desktop and one for tablet/mobile. In the tablet/mobile view, the menus are collapsed and accessible through the "hamburger icons" (three horizontal bars). Suicide prevention week resources
Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 8-14. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, and there are often signs that a person is considering suicide. Faculty, staff and students can access information about responding to concerns for others on the Luther College Counseling Service website: https://www2.luther.edu/

Pilates classes at Luther
Luther College is working in cooperation with Winneshiek Medical Center Rehab and Sports Medicine to provide Pilates Fitness classes for faculty and staff. Classes are held in the CFA dance studio. Sessions are:
Wednesdays, Sept. 10-Oct. 15: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Wednesdays, Oct. 22-Dec. 3: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (no class Nov. 26)
Led by trained instructor, Bridgette Mitchell, STOTT Pilates classes base exercise on five basic principles emphasizing breath, spinal alignment and mobility. Exercises can be modified to skill level and needs, to ensure safety of the musculoskeletal system and provide profound results. Fee is $24 for each six-week session. Register on the first day of class.
Those who complete four of the six sessions will receive a $25 Luther gift card.

SAC Spotlight: Master Hypnotist Jim Wand Sept. 5
With more than 9,000 professional engagements to his name and a lengthy career spent building a fiercely entertaining repertoire, Master Hypnotist Jim Wand returns to Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
Moon Festival event Sept. 6
The Moon Festival is coming earlier this year. Chinese Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, held on the 15th day of the eighth month in Lunar calendar, is a popular harvest festival celebrated in China. This year, it falls on Sept. 8. Co-sponsored by MLLL and ASAA, a Moon Festival Party will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Farwell Lounge on the eighth floor. It is a public event open to everyone. If the door is locked, call 419-7508. Come enjoy delicious moon cakes and fragrant tea, play Chinese games and learn about Chinese culture.
Faculty Artist Series: Showcase concert Sept. 7
Luther College music faculty will present a showcase concert at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 7, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The music faculty showcase will feature a cross-section of the Luther College music faculty performing a broad variety of works from Vivaldi to Luther's Composer-in-Residence Brooke Joyce.
Performers include: Heather Armstrong, oboe; Carla Hanson, soprano; Carol Hester, flute; Xiao Hu, piano; Brooke Joyce, piano; Karen Kanakis, soprano; Eric Kutz, cello; Jacob Lassetter, baritone; Spencer Martin, violin; Jessica Paul, piano; Kathryn Reed, organ; Andrew Whitfield, baritone; and Katherine Haller, Michael Chesher, Lynne Postudensek Hart and Peter Hart, saxophone quartet.
Faculty Artist Series: Karen Kanakis Sept. 12
Karen Kanakis will present a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on Luther campus. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Accompanying Kanakis in the performance is Jessica Paul, Luther professor of music and collaborative pianist.
The program features music sung entirely in Italian by various composers including Franz Liszt, Giuseppe Verdi, Paolo Tosti, Gioachino Rossini and Reynaldo Hahn.
Faculty Artist Series: Murasaki Duo Sept. 14
The Murasaki Duo, featuring husband-and-wife team Miko Kominami and Eric Kutz will present a piano-cello recital titled "A French Affair" at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall.
The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The program will be entirely dedicated to French music. The Murasaki Duo will begin their recital with "Drinking Song" by Maurice Ravel, "Three Pieces" by Nadia Boulanger, "Suite, Op. 16" by Camille Saint-Saens and Francis Poulenc's Sonata for Cello and Piano.
In the second half of the performance, Tarn Travers, Luther visiting instructor in music, will join the duo on violin for a performance of Ravel's Piano Trio. Originally composed in 1914, this performance celebrates the piece's 100th anniversary.
Tennis clinic for area youth
A fall tennis clinic will be held at Luther on Sundays from Sept. 21-Oct. 19. A beginner camp for children ages 5-7 will be held from 12-12:45 p.m. cost is $30; lessons for ages 7-10 will be held from 12:15-1:15 p.m., cost is $40; and lessons for junior high and high school students will be held from 12:45-2:30 p.m., cost is $50.
