Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 8-14. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, and there are often signs that a person is considering suicide. A note from the Student Philanthropy Council
Each fall, nearly 400 Luther students volunteer their time to call for Phonathon. These students connect with alumni, parents and friends, raising nearly $250,000 for the Luther College Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is a $1.8 million dollar effort that supports scholarships, academics and living at Luther.
Please take a moment during classes, meetings or activities to thank students who are volunteering. They make a huge difference for each and every one of us on campus. Without them, what we do would not be possible.
Registration for campus blood draw
Slots are now available for campus blood draws on Sept. 18 and 25, Oct. 2 and 16. Register online here. Cost for the general wellness blood draw is $35, the PSA is $40, and an A1C is $30. The fee must be paid at the blood screening, but will get reimbursed through Midwest Group Benefits. For those that are having their A1C checked, that will not be reimbursed through Luther and will have to go through your Flex. Those participating need to fast for 12 hours prior to the blood draw, but may drink water during the fast. Contact Vicky <jaegervi> for more information. Just a reminder that all Luther employees need to have a blood screen, physical and complete the Health Risk Assessment by the end of December to avoid a rise in their health insurance premium.
'Soup's On!' cooks needed
We are looking for volunteers to prepare a delicious soup for the upcoming "Soup's On!" events, an informal gathering of students, faculty, staff and Decorah community members, Oct. 2 and Jan. 22. Cooks are encouraged stay and enjoy the soup. These events are a lot of fun and a great chance to meet new, interesting individuals. If interested, please contact the Diversity Center, <dyerja01>.
Forensic speech/debate team seeks advisor
The Forensic Speech and Debate team is looking for a new advisor for the academic year. Responsibilities include reserving vehicles for tournaments, booking hotel rooms in the tournament host city and authorizing a check after receiving the invoice for entry fees. Pilates classes at Luther
Luther College is working in cooperation with Winneshiek Medical Center Rehab and Sports Medicine to provide Pilates Fitness classes for faculty and staff. Classes are held in the CFA dance studio. Sessions are:
Wednesdays, Sept. 10-Oct. 15: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Wednesdays, Oct. 22-Dec. 3: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (no class Nov. 26)
Led by trained instructor, Bridgette Mitchell, STOTT Pilates classes base exercise on five basic principles emphasizing breath, spinal alignment and mobility. Exercises can be modified to skill level and needs, to ensure safety of the musculoskeletal system and provide profound results. Fee is $24 for each six-week session. Register on the first day of class.
Those who complete four of the six sessions will receive a $25 Luther gift card.
Lunch Hour Yoga Series

Faculty Artist Series: Karen Kanakis Sept. 12
Karen Kanakis will present a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on Luther campus. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Accompanying Kanakis in the performance is Jessica Paul, Luther professor of music and collaborative pianist.
Faculty Artist Series: Murasaki Duo Sept. 14
The Murasaki Duo, featuring husband-and-wife team Miko Kominami and Eric Kutz will present a piano-cello recital titled "A French Affair" at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall.
The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Tennis clinic for area youth
A fall tennis clinic will be held at Luther on Sundays from Sept. 21-Oct. 19. A beginner camp for children ages 5-7 will be held from 12-12:45 p.m., cost is $30; lessons for ages 7-10 will be held from 12:15-1:15 p.m., cost is $40; and lessons for junior high and high school students will be held from 12:45-2:30 p.m., cost is $50. Women's Club starts new year
Luther College Woman's Club opens this academic year of programs and events Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room of Dahl Centennial Union. The opening event will include "The Local Food Hub: How it Works" program by Teresa Wiemerslage, music presentation by a Luther musician, business meeting, and refreshments. All are welcome.
Kristin Swanson lectures on the book of Judges
In the first Paideia Texts and Issues lecture of the 2014-15 academic year, Kristin Swanson, professor of religion, will present the lecture "Transparency in the eye of the reader: How inner-biblical allusions make clear and obscure meaning(s) in the Book of Judges" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Center for Faith and Life. A reception held in Qualley Lounge will follow the lecture.
CSS presents "The Intergalactic Nemesis"
Luther College invites you to open the 2014-15 Center Stage Series season not only with a bang, but with a "BAM," a "ZOOM" and a "PEW PEW PEW" as the live-action graphic novel "The Intergalactic Nemesis: Target Earth" makes its landing on campus. "The Intergalactic Nemesis" is the season opener of Luther College's Center Stage Series. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
College Night Sept. 15
Students from area high schools will have an opportunity to talk about post-high school education options with representatives from more than 70 higher education institutions on Monday, Sept. 15 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Rec Center. Financial aid information sessions will take place at 6:45 and 7:15 p.m. Students and their parents are invited to attend.
Tuesday Silent Meditation
Tuesday Silent Meditation takes place each Tuesday of the academic year at 5:15 p.m. in the Melanchthon Interfaith Room, CFL 205, starting Sept. 16. Sittings are led by Rev. Shoken Winecoff of the local Ryumonji Zen Monastery and Professors Gereon Kopf, Scott Hurley or Lee Zook. Email student coordinator DJ Simpson at <simpda02> with questions. Teacher induction ceremony
A ceremony to note admission to the Teacher Education Program will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, in the CFL Recital Hall. Judith Nye, professor emerita, has been invited to share her insights on teaching and teachers with the new inductees and guests. This is open to any who wish to attend.

Get Ready for Banned Books Week with Preus Library
Stop by Preus Library or visit our Facebook page (facebook.com/PreusLibrary) to share your thoughts on censorship. Randomly awarded prizes for participants include a $25 gift certificate to the Book Shop (for students) and two tickets to the Center Stage performance "The Intergalactic Nemesis" (for faculty/staff). Awful Purdies to play free open-air concert in Decorah
The modern folk band, Awful Purdies, begin their tour of Iowa Sunday, Sept. 14. The concert, open to the public with no charge for admission, will be held at Seed Savers Exchange's Heritage Farm from 1-3 p.m.
The band seeks stories that will inspire them to write new music for an album based on the play by Sean Christopher Lewis, titled "All Recipes Are Home." The play, commissioned by the Center Stage Series at Luther College, incorporates stories of farm, food and community of northeast Iowa that have been shared with the playwright over the past year. It is a signature event for the Center Stage Series and will close their season with the play's premiere on Saturday, April 11, 2015.
Concertgoers should bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the show. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the barn.

Seed Saving Workshop
Seeds can be expensive. Join Seed Savers staff for an hour-long session on how to save your own seeds. Participants will learn which varieties are easiest to save and the best methods for properly processing and storing seed. Workshop is open to students, staff, faculty and community members and will take place Monday, Sept. 15 from 12:15 p.m.-1:15 p.m. in Valders 362. Please register online.
Body toning class for staff
A body toning class will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. in the Regents Center Dance Studio for staff only. There will be different types of workouts and routines will change every couple of weeks in this half hour class. Starts Tuesday, Sept. 9. Faculty Artist Series: Benjamin Yates Sept. 19
Benjamin Yates, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a trombone recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. Yates will perform on alto, tenor and bass trombones. The recital features trombone and organ duo works and a varied program with works from the 14th century to the present.
Evasons mentalist mind reading duo
Join the internationally renowned Jeff and Tessa Evason in a mind-blowing evening of telepathy and showmanship when the Evasons Mentalist Mind Reading Duo take the stage at Marty's 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. Elkina piano duo
The critically acclaimed Elkina Piano Duo will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The duo's recital will focus on the works of Russian composers. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra concert

Jessica Paul, designer and coordinator of Luther's Art SONG JAM-boree concert series, was invited to submit an article describing its evolution since fall of 2006. The article, "Spreading the Word (and the Music): It's Time for Another Song Jam!" was published in the spring issue of the Journal of the International Alliance for Women in Music (Vol. 20, No. 1, 2014). This year's SONG JAMS will be on Oct. 13 and March 9.
David Bishop and students Adam Frei '14, Rose Weselmann '13, Jessica Conley '13, John Reading '13, and Leslie Rauworth '13, presented a poster titled "The role of grandparent ratings of phenotypic resemblance in discriminative investment" at the annual meeting of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society in Natal, Brazil.
David Bishop and students Emily Harlynn '13, Alexandra Nyman '13, and Sworupa Sthapit '13, presented a poster titled "Attachment and college adjustment: The mediating role of instrumental coping" at the annual meeting of the Midwest Psychological Society in Chicago.
Ginger Meyette has had an article accepted, which will appear in a future issue of "The New Social Worker." The title of the article is "Welcome to the Social Work Profession: Seeking a Mentor in a New Job."
Scott Carlson, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has published research exploring how dietary kudzu extract can improve glucose control. The article, "Acute and Chronic Kudzu Improves Plasma Glucose Tolerance in Non-Diabetic CD-1 Mice" can be found in the most recent edition of the Journal of Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus.
William Kuhlman, college organist and professor of music emeritus, and Yvonne Kuhlman, retired director of Campus Programming, conducted services titled "A Rally Day Festival of Congregational Song Through the Church Year" at Christ Lutheran Church in Arcadia, Wisconsin, on Sunday, Sept. 7, featuring hymns and organ music appropriate to readings and seasonal themes. He also presented a seminar featuring the history and culture of the Casavant tracker organ in the sanctuary as part of the festival.
Stephanie Fretham published a book chapter titled "Neurotoxicology" in the most recent edition of "Haye's Principles and Methods of Toxicology" textbook.
Odette Bruneau and students Alex Lundell, Paul McKay, Elizabeth Larget, Mitch Kennedy, Amanda Johnson and Jonathan Koch will present their grant models Sept. 25, at the Iowa Transition Conference 2014 in Coralville, Iowa.
